Just read that mumsnet do not pay their night staff.
This cannot be true can it mumsnet?
If it is true then what is going on at mnhq
Aibu to be shocked by this
Or do fellow mumsnetters think it is ok to work for free
If the story is true

But my immediate thought it that you have got the wrong end of the stick! 😂

unfortunateevents · 01/07/2022 10:29

How are people supposed to comment without a source?

RJnomore1 · 01/07/2022 10:29

The night watch have always been volunteers.

cannibalvalley · 01/07/2022 10:30

It is true that are unpaid.

JauntyJinty · 01/07/2022 10:30

Source? My first gess is that there a few trusted volunteers who do a bit of moderation in their spare time? Quite normal on forums

007DoubleOSeven · 01/07/2022 10:31

I've read posts here which mention that night staff are volunteers- they don't have all the same abilities as mods, they just hide posts.

toomuchlaundry · 01/07/2022 10:32

Volunteers don’t get paid. I assume they accepted that when they volunteered for the role.

I am a school Trustee responsible for 20 schools, I don’t get paid either but knew that when I applied for the role

Do you know why
It seems wrong not to pay the night shift

I assume similar role to moderators on community Facebook pages

ElizaJones · 01/07/2022 10:34

Actually op I think I’m mistaken. I’ll ask mn to remove my post.

Viviennemary · 01/07/2022 10:34

I did know this. But can't see the problem. Lots of forums have help from volunteers. And if they want to do it why not.

SheepingStandingUp · 01/07/2022 10:35

It's true op. The Samaritans don't pay their their staff in the phones either. Not even when I work until 2 am or overnight. It's a travesty. All these volunteers, volunteering voluntarily. It should be banned.

Whinge · 01/07/2022 10:36

I thought it was quite well known that the night watch are volunteers. It comes up a lot when people post about trolls taking over the site. It's been the case for a while now that those who want to target the site know it's vulnerable at night, and over the weekend as moderation is very patchy. (i'm not blaming the volunteers for this)

Squareflair · 01/07/2022 10:36

It's not unusual for volunteers to help admin and moderate online platforms. I'm sure if it became subscription only they could afford to pay all staff.

WeAreBob · 01/07/2022 10:36

Every forum volunteer moderators.

That has always been the way with forums.

They aren't staff. They don't need to do it. They volunteered because they wanted to be forum moderators. Some people like that for some reason.

RJnomore1 · 01/07/2022 10:37

Why I think was a hot topic of debate when it was set up.

there was no night moderation prior to it and obviously it’s not something MNHQ value enough to pay for. The two schools of thought are it’s fine as an act of community or that it’s taking advantage of kindly minded people for profit.

Personally I wouldn’t be doing it but if others want to it’s up to them.

InChocolateWeTrust · 01/07/2022 10:37

The Night Watch is a specific thing. People choose to volunteer for it, that's their choice. If you see some of the disturbing or worrying stuff the night watch hide, you may understand it's a bit like volunteering as a pcso or on the samaritans. It's a social role some people take seriously, of protecting the vulnerable.

It is on another thread.

Samaritans mind you are a not for profit org.

Because they aren’t a night shift. Not in the same way as the day shift are staff.

From what I remember, they are a small number of posters who have the power to hide posts until MN staff can moderate them in the morning.

User0610134049 · 01/07/2022 10:38

Eh? They’re volunteers

SheepingStandingUp · 01/07/2022 10:39

RJnomore1 · 01/07/2022 10:38

Well yes but still, no one is forced into being a volunteer. It's voluntary.
