To ask for your experiences with Microgynon?

My first time taking the pill was last year - I bought 3 months of Microgynon-30 and only managed a week on it because it was making me completely unable to fall asleep. I would be exhausted and lie there for hours, but nothing would happen. By the end of the week I was practically a zombie. As soon as I stopped taking it, I could sleep again. So I tried it again to see if it was in fact the effect of the pill, and it happened again.

I've been considering trying a new pill but I fear it will have the same or worse effect. Moreover I can't find anything about this side effect online, which doesn't help.

Have you taken Microgynon? If not, what pill do you take, did you try any others before and what are your experiences?

Just re started it after 7 years because my pmt is so bad. I have pcos and covid injections made my periods stop for a year then they came back with avengence.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/07/2022 14:11

I was on when I was very young - aged 18/19 - back in the late 90s. Really disagreed with me and made me very emotional.

Konstantine8364 · 01/07/2022 14:15

Didn't get on with it, as someone else said it's cheapest so prescribed first. I'm on gedarel and have been for 10 years with absolutely no side affects. Hormonal contraception is a just trial and error, lots of my friends are on the mini pill and that was awful for me. I would try a few different ones for a couple of months each. Once you find one that works it brilliant, you can skip periods by running packs too. I hate using condoms, it was me not my partner that wanted to stop, it completely ruins the moment and it doesn't feel as good at all. And no way is anyone going near me with a coil after the horror stories I've heard!!

Awful medication! Heaviest periods ever, cluster headaches and crippling depression. Came off artificial birth control in 2016, never looked back!

Idontlikehim · 01/07/2022 14:30

I tried it twice and it made me bleed every day for months so I had to stop. It was very effective as a contraceptive because I was bleeding constantly so didn’t have sex.

rubydoobydoo · 01/07/2022 14:42

I used to take Rigevidon which I believe uses the same hormones, and it was the only contraceptive I ever got on with! They wouldn't prescribe it any more as apparently I was too old so more at risk of a stroke.
Tried everything else - the mini-pill gave me sore boobs constantly, the mirena coil made me depressed, and the depo injection made me half a stone heavier and spotty. All of the above destroyed my sex drive completely.

So now DP has had the snip. I would have been sterilised myself if they'd let me!

BlackCountryWench2 · 06/07/2022 00:44

I was on it for over 20 years, I only had to give it up because of my age and because I was a smoker back then. After three years of stupendously heavy and excruciatingly painful periods, nine days at a time, anaemia, fainting, vomiting and chronic diarrhoea, it literally gave me my life back. I didn’t get on with the mini pill or the coil afterwards, but by that time I had a new partner who’d had the snip and I decided to dispense with contraception. My periods are now ok, painful but liveable, but I’ll always be grateful to Microgynon. And remember: correlation doesn’t mean causation.

Bunnycat101 · 06/07/2022 05:54

I get on with it fine- seems quite a mixed bag though. It’s strange how different things affect us. I’ve always been put off the depo injection having seen my flatmate at uni really suffer on it and have to wait for it to get out of her system. It was like a switch flicked over night and she turned completely crazy.

SickKid · 06/07/2022 06:02

I was on it for about 10 years. At the time, thought it was fine. However once I stopped taking it I had bucket loads more energy and stopped taking afternoon naps 😂. It was such a difference I can only assume it was the pill!

MsTSwift · 06/07/2022 06:03

Killed my sexual desire stone dead. Couldn’t see what the fuss about sex was until I came off it. Never gone near hormonal contraception since

I had microgynon as a stop gap for my heavy bleeding, had many ultrasounds and they can't find anything wrong.
I've been out on many different types of pill all causing my depression or severe migraines generally tired and not feeling myself.
Microgynon is the worst I've been on it was effective at stopping my periods but it caused leg cramping, anxiety attacks, stress increased, mood swings, tiredness, depression, foggy head feeling and more. I tried to wait it out until my second month of taking it, I couldn't take it no more! I was feeling unable to drive and go to work and was really making depressed and anxious. I'm not usually the anxious type ...
Stopped and bled heavy with cramping and pain and now still spotting in week two.
Trust your body. Any changes to your mood or sleep stop taking the pill. It's not meant for you.
Speak to your health provider.

I'm now on waiting list for mirena coil.
