To ask for your experiences with Microgynon?

My first time taking the pill was last year - I bought 3 months of Microgynon-30 and only managed a week on it because it was making me completely unable to fall asleep. I would be exhausted and lie there for hours, but nothing would happen. By the end of the week I was practically a zombie. As soon as I stopped taking it, I could sleep again. So I tried it again to see if it was in fact the effect of the pill, and it happened again.

I've been considering trying a new pill but I fear it will have the same or worse effect. Moreover I can't find anything about this side effect online, which doesn't help.

Have you taken Microgynon? If not, what pill do you take, did you try any others before and what are your experiences?

Ended up with hormonal chloasma/melasma from it. On the mirena coil now.

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/07/2022 12:00

I must have been on microgynon for about ten years, I had absolutely no problems with it.

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/07/2022 12:04

"Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to use condoms as every one I have tried over the years has caused my chronic cystitis to flare up. But at the same time I’m not confident in the withdraw method myself and DP are currently using."

Nor should you be confident! It's how a lot of women get pregnant, even if he withdraws before ejaculation. You are effectively using ZERO contraception.

YerAWizardHarry · 01/07/2022 12:07

@tootsierubs yup gave me bilateral pulmonary emboli, the A&E doctor had never seen clots so severe. I was 27 at the time and a regular gym goer etc etc. So scary that the risks of hormonal contraception aren’t widely known

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 01/07/2022 12:12

Took microgynan about twenty years ago for about 2 years. In the end my partner said he'd rather I got pregnant than be the hormonal mess I was! Honestly the mood swings were horrendous. Would never take it again.

Prometheus · 01/07/2022 12:17

I used it for about 15 years with no problem. Then a few years ago my GP said they were advised to stop prescribing it due to high risk and switched me onto Rigevideon (sp?) which has also been fine.

DangerNoodles · 01/07/2022 12:21

There is a reason it's the cheapest!

I found it pointless, it made me depressed and killed my libido so we stopped having sex. My neighbour developed a blood clot from it.

Niceshotdoc · 01/07/2022 12:30

I took it on and off for 10 years until I developed breast cancer. I'm assuming there's a link.

Notadramallama · 01/07/2022 12:50

I'm 45 and have been taking it since I was 19 - no issues whatsoever.

FreestyleInTrance · 01/07/2022 12:57

I bled continuously whilst taking it, which made me miserable, and I went up a dress size and two cup sizes. I stopped taking it after 6 weeks. Switched to Femodene and never looked back :)

Geneva12 · 01/07/2022 13:26

Took microgynon when I was in my teens. Used to give me headaches so swapped to a different pill.

when I was in my early 20s I was talking to my Partners friends then girlfriend and she said she was on microgynon and had been experiencing headaches too.

Blossomandbee · 01/07/2022 13:28

It made me constantly nauseous. A nurse changed me to Cilest when I told her and that was much better.

TheAgeOfAquarius · 01/07/2022 13:29

I started taking it when I met current DP, no side effects except for the positive pregnancy test a year later. Wouldn't change DS for the world but he was a bit of a shock.

Scianel · 01/07/2022 13:29

I tried it and lasted a few days only. I was in a constant rage.

heyitsthistle · 01/07/2022 13:34

I took it for 10 years and never had a problem. I'm waiting for my periods to start post-birth so I can go back on it.

I tried Celeste or whatever it's called but I became a desert and sex was unenjoyable.

I take Microgynon, transferred from Cileste when I moved country and they didn't stock a Cielste equvilent. Had an emotional week or two as I transitioned between the two, but no other problems ever since (getting on for a decade).

Yeah I had this. The ingredients if coke ate weren't available licenced abroad.

My experience of taking it - not an issue with the medication itself unless my 17 day opposite me I am example Grin

SharpLily · 01/07/2022 13:38

I was on Microgynon for about 20 years and got on with it really well, better than other pills I'd tried.

DamnUserName21 · 01/07/2022 13:38

It's trial and error with the pill until you find the right one to suit you.

There are loads of different ones. Go back to GP or a practice nurse that does contraceptive reviews (or a family planning clinic) and have a chat. Below is a useful site to have a look at options:

DamnUserName21 · 01/07/2022 13:39

PS In terms of microgynon, there used to be a lower dose one Micro 20.

itsgettingweird · 01/07/2022 13:41

17yo not day!!!!

I had a hysterectomy 3 days ago so definitely not more hormones or accidental pregnancy for me Grin

MsOllie · 01/07/2022 13:42

Bled constantly on it. Now have a copper coil and much prefer it

THIS

It doesn't matter how many people tell you about their awful experience or fantastic experience of a pill you cannot judge how your body react from this.

Try it, if it doesn't agree with you try a different one. Do not be scared to go back to your GP and request a change.

Puddington · 01/07/2022 14:07

I've been taking Microgynon for over 10 years and never had any problems with it, it made my periods lighter and allowed me to skip them (eg if I was going on holiday) and never had any negative side effects.

A few years ago I went to renew my prescription and my GP told me "they weren't prescribing it anymore" as it was costing too much money! She gave me a different one (might have been Cileste? can't rememeber) which I tried for a few months and didn't get on with at all. My periods weren't as light and I just didn't take to it. When I next saw her I told her I didn't like the new pill and she told me it was exactly the same as the last one as if I was an idiot. Since then I've been buying Microgynon from online pharmacies. A shame because my prescriptions were previously free but it's worth it to have the contraception I actually want!

JessicaBrassica · 01/07/2022 14:09

Made me go mad. Worst ever pmt. Wasn't safe to be near other people. My co-worker resigned. I changed pill. Life improved.

Penguintears · 01/07/2022 14:10

My hair fell out on it!

I was on Cileste for years and years with no problems at all.
