To think nothing is more pointless

DP recently told me about a video she watched - I didn't ask why - in which a woman used a hairdryer to curl her eyelashes (apparently by putting on mascara and pointing the hairdryer up her face). I said that this confirmed a long-held suspicion of mine: eyelash curlers are the most pointless piece of equipment in existence. You all own hairdryers, right? So they're redundant, even if they had been any use in the first place: I can't speak for other demographics but no straight man ever looked at a woman and thought "you know, she'd be attractive if only her eyelashes were curlier".

She was unable to convince me with reasoned argument that there is anything out there more pointless and less useful. So have at it, MN. I'm betting it won't be long before someone nominates their DH, DP or DC...

My eyeballs feel dry just picturing that in my head.

TeenPlusCat · 26/06/2022 13:26

Those soap dispensers you don't have to touch.
Who cares? You are washing your hands anyway.

Have always thought this 😂

Noonado · 26/06/2022 13:40

As a contact lens wearer, the thought of aiming a hairdryer in the direction of my eyes is pretty horrifying 😱

Agreed on the soap dispenser though.

TempName01 · 26/06/2022 13:48

You’re supposed to use the hairdryer to heat up your eyelash curlers!

For me the eyelash curling is not about having curly eyelashes, it lifts the appearance of my eyes so they don’t look droopy, it makes a massive difference to me looking more awake and younger

TronDeReplay · 26/06/2022 13:50

I've used a hairdryer to heat metal curlers slightly so the curl holds better - did he not mean this? Just blasting a hairdryer at your eyes sounds mental.

I look 200% more awake and alert with my lashes curled - I have slightly odd ones that are long and thick but stick straight out or down, so my lids can look a bit droopy.

Most useless thing that I can understand the reasoning behind but hinders my life way more than it should - public loo toilet roll holders that "secure" the roll so much that you can't get any out or can only pull out minuscule tufts. I hate them Angry

TempName snap!

TempName01 · 26/06/2022 13:53

🤣

RudsyFarmer · 26/06/2022 13:53

Aren’t you meant to heat the eyelash curler with the hairdryer not blast the hot air into your face!?

ExCarer · 26/06/2022 13:54

I've never used them but when I've been handling raw meat or even messy cooked chicken , I often think that they'd be useful so that I don't have to get juices/bits all over the dispenser. Also when I worked in care, they were useful for some clients who had weak/arthritic hands.

worraliberty · 26/06/2022 13:55

I can't speak for other demographics but no straight man ever looked at a woman and thought "you know, she'd be attractive if only her eyelashes were curlier".

And that's what it's all about is it?

Well, I don't know, that's kind of my point here. Why else do women curl their eyelashes if not because someone's convinced them they'll look better if they do?

Are you saying that as a woman you've never been treated detrimentally when you looked sleepy, spotty, grey-skinned, perceived as too old, perceived as too young, with a depressed expression on your face.... compared with when you looked clear-skinned, glowing, alert, healthy, the 'correct' age for the job, smiling brightly...?

Really unfairly, we are treated on how we look by many. Including in the workplace. This can't be news to you?

RockItLikeRocketFuel · 26/06/2022 14:31

@TronDeReplay
And did you find that it was curling your eyelashes that helped?

Perhaps those pesky little women have minds of their own and when they look in the mirror, think it looks nicer?

I mean God forbid they should do that without checking the opinion of a straight man, but there you go.

chesirecat99 · 26/06/2022 14:35

Because curling your eyelashes lifts them away from the eye so the eyelashes look longer, highlighting the eye more, and makes the eye look slightly bigger as the eyelashes aren't shielding/covering doing their job the eye so much. Wider eyes denote youth and health. It's not about curly eyelashes, it's about accentuating the eyes.

But, meh, you're right, life's too short for curling your eyelashes.

‘Someone’ is generally society - men and women - who have decided that women should look a picture of health and youthfulness at all times which is unfortunate given the burden of being ‘nice’ and compliant leads to a lot of stress alongside the general physical hormonal rollercoaster that is just our normal biology. This is partly to do with basic animal instinct and shying away from ill health and partly to do with not burdening others with our ‘woman's issues’.

Curling your eyelashes makes them look longer (sexually desirable and an indicator of general health), your eyes wider (sexually desirable and being able to see more of the whites and iris’s means you can gauge general health) and can help you look less tired.

Pointing a hairdryer at your face is stupid, besides wouldn’t that also push up the lower lashes?

I don't own a hair dryer

Yes, it helped me look more awake. I've already said that.

TronDeReplay · 26/06/2022 15:40

For me and my specific lashes, curling them also helps a great deal when applying mascara.

I don't curl or wear mascara every day, by any means.

PeskyRooks · 26/06/2022 15:57

I think chip forks are pointless. Whenever I see a box on the counter at a chippy I wonder how many years it takes for the box to be empty!

I'm not getting involved in the eyelash curler discussion it's getting too heated!

Hurstlandshome · 26/06/2022 15:57

Wouldn't put mascara on without curling lashes. Why only enhance your lashes 80% - when you go get to 100%?

Incidentally 'putting mascara on then blasting with a hairdryer' would not only make your eyes water - ruining your make up, but could 'melt' the mascara causing it to become tacky and clump.

hangrylady · 26/06/2022 16:00

YABU. Eyelash curlers are an essential item in my make up bag and I've used them every day since I was about 15. I have quite short eyelashes and it makes a huge difference.

Ihaveroyallyscrewedup · 26/06/2022 16:02

I don’t own a hairdryer or eyelash curlers so they both seem pointless to me, what seems more pointless is smart washing machines, if I’m putting the washing in the machine then why do I need to use an app to start it, I’m standing in front of it!

Fizbosshoes · 26/06/2022 16:07

I've used eyelash curlers once but I'm a lazy cow and too low maintenance to use regularly

I've always thought leaf blowers looked a bit pointless but I'm happy to be corrected!
