to ask if this is maggot or grain of rice?

I bought a meat box a few weeks ago and put all meat in freezer. Took some chicken out to defrost yesterday, just browning it and saw this - my first thought was it was a maggot (boke) but could it be a grain of rice?

I don't want to chuck out good chicken for nothing... How can I tell?

I floured and seasoned the chicken, can't imagine how a grain of rice could have got in there but not impossible that one was on the pepper grinder or something.

Tricky. In the first photo I’d definitely say it isn’t. But the second does have maggotty vibes. I wouldn’t usually expect there to be just one though.

I mean if rice has eyes then sure! I couldn't eat it sorry OP.

GrendelsGrandma · 26/06/2022 12:04

I just tried frying some rice and it doesn't look like the Thing...

Eww 🤢. That doesn't look edible.

GreenIsle · 26/06/2022 12:06

It's a maggot

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 26/06/2022 12:07

Can you cut it in half?

GrendelsGrandma · 26/06/2022 12:10

I tried but it's fried so it's kind of turgid...

Extra protein 😂😂 I don't think I could bring myself to eat it, just the thought would put me off...

OneTC · 26/06/2022 12:15

Not a maggot i reckon but no suggestion for what it might be

TerrifiedandWorried · 26/06/2022 12:19

Having just cleared up maggots from round my cats bowl (still heaving) I don't think it's a maggot. Have you checked your flour though? Looks almost like a casing for something. Or could it be a cooked grain of rice still stuck to pan/utensil?

GrendelsGrandma · 26/06/2022 12:29

It was freshly opened flour and I can't see any other beasties in the bag. I tried frying rice to see if it looked the same but it didn't... I think we might go out for lunch

I've googled fried maggot and it has ridges. Even non fried maggots has ridges. I think your chicken is fine to eat.

SandyWedges · 26/06/2022 12:37

It's got like a weird antenna/hair coming out the top? I think you're going to have to chuck it.

Marmite17 · 26/06/2022 12:38

When younger, and didn't know better, bought chicken from a market stall. Had a maggot but cooked and ate it. Was, amazingly, OK.
Problem is that raw chicken needs to be constantly refrigerated. So box deliveries, no guarantee of that.
In heat cat food and other raw food soon, within hours, gets maggots.
If it's been frozen and defrosted plus cooked thoroughly any nasty germs likely to be dead.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 26/06/2022 12:40

Are you sure it's not a tiny sliver off the chicken skin?

DimplesToadfoot · 26/06/2022 12:42

Fried Flour Weevil? Crunchy yet satisfying 🤣🤢🤮

StridTheKiller · 26/06/2022 12:42

As a taxideist I can safely say that is a maggot.

Marmite17 · 26/06/2022 12:52

And this is I'd be careful with chicken abroad. Unless very thoroughly cooked. 2 friends caught salmonella.

Marmite17 · 26/06/2022 12:53

Is why

Bettysnow · 26/06/2022 12:55

It definitely doesn't look like rice and i find rice grains all the time as my dogs eat it daily so im pretty familiar with it.
Not sure its a maggot either but certainly resembles one

GrendelsGrandma · 26/06/2022 13:52

What's a taxideist @StridTheKiller ? A religious cabbie?

@Marmite17 I get that food hygiene is important but I think salmonella and maggots are not at all the same thing

I've decided it's a bit of feather stump and am going for it, I'll update whether I survive the experience :)

Doubleraspberry · 26/06/2022 13:58

Could it be a weevil from the flour? Have you had a good look through the packet to check there are no others?
