to ask if this is maggot or grain of rice?

I bought a meat box a few weeks ago and put all meat in freezer. Took some chicken out to defrost yesterday, just browning it and saw this - my first thought was it was a maggot (boke) but could it be a grain of rice?

I don't want to chuck out good chicken for nothing... How can I tell?

I floured and seasoned the chicken, can't imagine how a grain of rice could have got in there but not impossible that one was on the pepper grinder or something.

I don't think it's a maggot, but I'd still be put off.
Though I think if chicken was bad enough to have maggots it would stink.
I once unpackaged chicken that was off (in date) and it stunk to high heaven, I couldn't have prepared it, it smelt so bad, but no maggots in sight.
Though if you think the retailer is at fault, I wouldn't complain and give them chance to hide evidence, I'd be straight on to environmental health

I've decided it's a bit of feather stump and am going for it, I'll update whether I survive the experience :)

You are so brave. Good luck. Here's a bravery medal or three 🏅🏅 🏅

Even if it was a maggot, and I don't think it is, one small one in a whole box wouldn't stop me from eating the meat. It would be a massive waste otherwise.

Could it be a weevil from the flour? Have you had a good look through the packet to check there are no others?

How big are you weevils???

Op are you dead? If you are I do hope you planned sufficiently so that this thread gets updated by your next of kin.

Seems kind of big for a maggot. Most maggots I’ve come across have been much smaller then rice. Also odd for there to be just one I’d have thought. Could be the highlander of maggots I suppose.

Snuffy28 · 26/06/2022 14:54

I need a photo of it next to a grain of rice.

I properly laughed at the religious cabbie comment 😁
Alas have no idea about the actual answer to your question.

KeepYaHeadUp · 26/06/2022 15:04

Taxidermist?!

GrendelsGrandma · 26/06/2022 15:29

Uh so I'm pressure cooking it for dinner so am as yet pre-death. I'll keep you updated! It was bigger than rice. I am going with my feather hypothesis. Hopefully pressure cooking the fuck out of it will make it safe anyway.

It was frozen in a sealed bag so I don't think anything could have got in there!

It looks like a caster

midlifecrash · 26/06/2022 16:07

Think a meat maggot has a black head

SandyWedges · 26/06/2022 16:32

Good luck!

Doubleraspberry · 26/06/2022 16:46

Do I mean weevil? Mealworms might have been what I was thinking of! Like maggots but emerge from dry goods rather than rotting stuff.

NorthernStruggler · 26/06/2022 17:23

Agreed that it looks like a caster (DP buys them for fishing).

LetsPlayShadowlands · 26/06/2022 22:19

It looks like a very very small Linda McCartney sausage.

Did you survive? 🙂

NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor · 26/06/2022 22:27

If it is, it’s just extra protein.

GrendelsGrandma · 27/06/2022 11:01

We ate it and are still here. I won't say it was the most enjoyable meal I've ever had :)
