To use the sideboard as a TV stand

we got a 75 inch tv recently. We are struggling to find a WIDE oak tv stand that’s reasonably priced. Some are so low that we’ll have to sit on the floor to have a reasonably viewing angle. I’m tempted to buy a sideboard to use as a tv stand. Height wise it’ll be perfect!
DH thinks it’ll look hideous. AIBU ?

we have oak furniture throughout, it has to be oak.

I'm not sure on your budget - but Chiltern Oak have loads sub £300 on their website that are extra wide, similar to the one we have for our tv (also ridiculously sized) and it's a good height.

daisypond · 24/06/2022 07:36

Why would it look hideous? It’s fine. We don’t have a TV stand. The TV is on a coffee table.

ohidoliketobe · 24/06/2022 07:37

We've had ours on a sideboard previously. Looked less hideous than a lot of the naff tv stands I've seen ....!

User112 · 24/06/2022 08:24

@MrszClaus Ill check it out. Tbh most of the wide ones I’ve seen are quite low (they assume my tv will go on the wall?)

Seems fine to me.

Not sure about the why it has to be oak though.

TamSamLam · 24/06/2022 08:28

We have a chest of drawers, it's fine.

Cleanbedlinen12 · 24/06/2022 08:28

If it helps, ours is on an old I mean vintage, stereo stand which Dh got from a charity shop. Before that it was on an old sewing machine, and a coffee table before that. We couldn’t find a tv stand that wasn’t scary- priced or looks. This still looks scary, but we can pretend it’s mid century modern!

TodaysSocks · 24/06/2022 08:30

TV stands are almost always crazy expensive or hideous. I get you, OP.

Stick the telly on what ever you like Grin

BusyMum47 · 24/06/2022 08:31

We've had our TV on a sideboard in the past- looked great - who says it has to be on something specifically advertised as a TV stand? If you like it & it fits in your room, who cares??

stormelf · 24/06/2022 08:31

We previously had ours on a sideboard, then it was moved to the top of a 16th century buffet.

Some options here - if they suit?

@User112

They're not the tallest! But if the tv is 75 inch then it should be a good height when seated. I think our tv stand is about 60ish cm high, then a 75 inch and it's shoulder height on me (I'm 6ft) so the height works!

WildThing87 · 24/06/2022 08:33

We have ours on a sideboard previously, as I really hated any tv stands we came across. Too low, and too easy to see all the leads at the back.

Looks much neater on the sideboard, and it's the perfect height.

saveforthat · 24/06/2022 08:34

I think most TV stands are hideous. Mine is on a sideboard, it looks great.

coodawoodashooda · 24/06/2022 08:34

Gumtree?

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/06/2022 08:35

I'm not sure about why it matters at all. Buy a piece of furniture that suits your budget and your room. A sideboard is perfectly fine if your eye line is comfortable.I would always go for a flexible option.

JustKeepLookingWithYourEyes · 24/06/2022 08:35

Mine is on a sideboard and is the perfect height - never occurred to me that people might think it doesn’t look right!

sunglassesonthetable · 24/06/2022 08:42

I think it's really really ordinary to have a TV on a sideboard 🤷‍♀️

Looks much better than a 'TV Stand' They are usually pretty hideous.

I have mine on a sideboard. Used to have it on a coffee table.

PattyMelt · 24/06/2022 08:45

Our TV is on an old sideboard that Dh up cycled. I looks nice. The TV is way too big for the normal TV stands

Embarrassed22 · 24/06/2022 08:57

My, considerably smaller at 32", TV is on a vintage glass display case. I too don't like looking down at the TV.

Use what works for you.

SheWoreYellow · 24/06/2022 08:59

I’d agree that it’s what most people do.

toohottoeat · 24/06/2022 09:00

Why wouldn't you walk mount it? Such a big tv is going to look really silly / odd on any kind of tv stand

notafruit · 24/06/2022 09:49

My TV is on an oak sideboard. It's not as big as your TV, but it looks good.

NoSquirrels · 24/06/2022 09:52

Get a sideboard, wall mount it slightly above that. It’s an enormous TV, it’ll be better on the wall. (Speaking as someone who’s had to live with DH’s ridiculous TVs for a long time, and has tried everything from wall to coffee table to TV stand to sideboard!)

ofwarren · 24/06/2022 09:53

Ours in on a sideboard. Never even considered that might be odd.
