AIBU to reach out for a Mancunian mint custard recipe for a friend who's desperate to knock some up for a milestone birthday soon as a sort of reminiscence of childhood thing Glitterball

I can’t believe that is a thing, DM grew up in Manchester. They were obviously too poor for custard. I can’t believe it’s actually green!

As long as chocolate shortbread is available as well.

Caminante · 23/06/2022 19:01

Pottedpalm · 23/06/2022 19:11

MINT custard? I'm from Manchester. Never heard of this in my life. Sounds disgusting

dontgobaconmyheart · 23/06/2022 19:32

To be fair, are all those saying it sounds disgusting also as put off by after eight mints or any combination of chocolate and mint in different formats.

I'd not heard of it and my initial thoughts were 'how odd' but actually it sounds alright, I can imagine it being nice. Not sure I'd colour it green but each to their own.

superram · 23/06/2022 19:39

Love custard, love mint based confectionary-I’m not convinced.

user1460574440 · 23/06/2022 19:39

As an ex school cook we used vannila blancmange, green food colour, peppermint essence.

1PresentOr2 · 23/06/2022 19:40

As long as you have some Australian Crunch to go with it. That's what they always served it with when I was at school (although I'm originally from the South West, not Manchester).

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 23/06/2022 19:41

We had this with warm chocolate sponge at primary school in the 80s. I'm assuming those who haven't heard of it are too young to remember making me feel old

Me too! People think I'm mad when I tell them about the green spearmint milk I used to drink. You can't get it in England, more's the pity!

Hallyup89 · 23/06/2022 19:46

Chocolate custard, yep.
Strawberry custard, acceptable.
Mint custard, sounds gross.

Vanilla and mint just doesn't go together in the slightest.

I'm from the South West as well and we had this! We also had strawberry custard and chocolate custard sometimes. It was delicious.

Greensleeves · 23/06/2022 19:50

I grew up in Stoke and had this with chocolate concrete for primary school pudding. Bloody delectable.

Yes!!! I am from the West Country, so not so far southwest as you but that epitomises school puddings for me!
Also coffee custard and flapjack

dimples76 · 23/06/2022 19:53

1Present0r2 I didn't know that it was called Australian crunch. It's not quite the weather for it but I think that we'll be having Australian crunch with mint custard at the weekend.

We used to have pink custard too but I think that was just colouring not flavouring.

Aurorie11 · 23/06/2022 19:56

Has to be chocolate concrete with mint custard

Mint Custard?!
BusySittingDown · 23/06/2022 19:58

When I was in hospital having DD2 (now 11 so not too long ago), I was discharged the same day but before I was discharged they moved me to the ward. For tea I was given, what I can only describe as, a retro school dinner! Cottage Pie with potato croquettes - potato and potato anyone? And for pudding: chocolate sponge with mint custard!

OMG, I tell you, after giving birth I couldn't have been given anything better 👌.

BoiledFinger · 23/06/2022 19:59

My family is Mancunian & I've literally never heard of this! We did however, have a stonking chocolate custard with a skin like leather - fabulous!😍

BusySittingDown · 23/06/2022 20:02

@MistyGreenAndBlue I misread your name as MintyGreenAndBlue 🤦‍♀️and I thought there you were slagging off mint custard. 😂
