AIBU to reach out for a Mancunian mint custard recipe for a friend who's desperate to knock some up for a milestone birthday soon as a sort of reminiscence of childhood thing Glitterball

Chocolate custard, yep.
Strawberry custard, acceptable.
Mint custard, sounds gross.

Vanilla and mint just doesn't go together in the slightest.

It isn't vanilla. It's more like thickened milk with green colour and peppermint flavouring.

In my school in the 80s, It was served with chocolate sponge.

70s school dinners not in Manchester: green mint custard and chocolate sponge, pink custard with jam roly poly and yellow custard with spotted dick. All gorgeous.

I grew up in Stoke and had this with chocolate concrete for primary school pudding. Bloody delectable.

Snap!
We had strawberry too.

ladymalfoy45 · 23/06/2022 20:27

@Greensleeves me too! Chocolate icing on the sponge. Waiting for the moment it had melted into the custard?
Did you have tarmac with the coloured dream whip piped on top?

sparklecrazy · 23/06/2022 20:32

1981 born Yorkshire lass here and it was bloody lush! Chocolate concrete and mint custard 👌👌👌👌 we also had strawberry custard too with the same chocolate concrete, equally lush!

augustusglupe · 23/06/2022 20:39

I grew up in Notts. We had lovely Pink and Chocolate custard, but never the green one.
We also had the best Manchester tart in the world. I've never tasted one as good.

timestheyarechanging · 23/06/2022 20:58

Absolutely delish school dinner pudding with chocolate sponge. Mum would never make it though!
We also had vanilla sponge with pink custard. London in the 70s.

CathyorClaire · 23/06/2022 21:10

Soft southerner here.

Banana custard was the worst school dinner atrocity inflicted on us.

Mint custard sounds like a torture from a universe far far away...

Imissmoominmama · 23/06/2022 21:15

We had this in the 70s, in Lancashire, with warm chocolate sponge.

It was my favourite school pudding.

1PresentOr2 · 23/06/2022 21:16

I beg to differ. Banana custard is lush - particularly with skin on the custard! 😋

Floydthebarber · 23/06/2022 21:20

What? No. Pink custard, yes. Mint custard? No.

After eights are different as it's dark chocolate. Dairy and mint is just terrible.

UnaOfStormhold · 23/06/2022 21:25

I've never had mint custard but I do make a mint chocolate ice cream recipe which involves making custard with milk which has had mint leaves simmered in it instead of vanilla pods. I also use white chocolate powder. It's delicious!

KendallRoysRabbit · 23/06/2022 21:26

OMG mint custard and a biscuit type pudding - yes! Definitely remember this as a school dinner pudding in the Midlands. Yum! Grin

When I was in hospital having DD2 (now 11 so not too long ago), I was discharged the same day but before I was discharged they moved me to the ward. For tea I was given, what I can only describe as, a retro school dinner! Cottage Pie with potato croquettes - potato and potato anyone? And for pudding: chocolate sponge with mint custard!

OMG, I tell you, after giving birth I couldn't have been given anything better 👌.

Post op I got
Cheese and onion pie with peas, mash and gravy and a bread roll
Jam roly poly and custard
2 cups of tea
A piece of jam cake in case I got hungry later

Apparently the catering staff were slightly confused by someone enjoying the food Grin it was delicious!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/06/2022 21:29

From the old school dinners recipe book

Mint Custard?!
FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/06/2022 21:34

Mint Custard?!

Pottedpalm · 23/06/2022 19:11

OMG yes!!
school dinner chocolate sponge and green custard! Lush!

Yes! I work in a school and would love them to still serve this!

HPD76 · 23/06/2022 23:14

Chocolate cake and minty custard is a favourite pudding in our house, bit unseasonal for the weather this week though.

Mint custard sounds like a torture from a universe far far away...

That would be The North 😏

ImFree2doasiwant · 23/06/2022 23:20

We had green custard. Wasn't minty though. Neither was the green milk.

Goodbyecustardtart · 23/06/2022 23:30

The chocolate crunch we had had desiccated coconut in it. Servedwith mint custard, which was more like a sweet, minty white sauce coloured green! So actually quite different from traditional custard, which I don’t think would taste nice if you added peppermint flavouring. I think I need to make it!

BusySittingDown · 24/06/2022 07:34

@MsOllie my mum always likes the food on hospital too! I was like - what are people talking about? This is lush! 😂

StrangeCondition · 24/06/2022 07:38

I'm Mancunian, never had mint custard at our schools (I'm 48), only ever heard it mentioned on here
