To just want to go to Blackpool ?

stripeylipey · 22/06/2022 16:12

Me and my partner are going on holiday in first week of November to the Canary Islands.
I'm really looking forward too it.
She has a week off in September and we have planned to go to Blackpool for the illuminations.
Now I'm really excited for Blackpool as I went every year with my parents and have such good memories.
My mum passed away when I was 13 so Blackpool is a nice comforting place for me.

She has now turned around and said she wants us to go to either Cyprus or Greece instead of Blackpool.
Aibu to just say no?
I mean we are going to the Canary Islands 7 weeks later so she will still get her sunshine fix.
What would you do?
We have no more weekends or weeks off this year so this is our only chance.

I do get where you're coming from with Blackpool as I used to go to the illuminations every year with my grandparents. However, it's worth acknowledging that for people who don't have fond childhood memories of the place it is a bit, well, shite.

Do you have to go for an entire week? We only ever went for a day trip and that was plenty of Blackpool.

BattenburgDonkey · 22/06/2022 16:21

Can you do both? Blackpool is only a one night thing really so maybe you could go to
blackpool for a night and then fly off for a long weekend somewere?

I agree with this. I went to Blackpool as a child, went recently for a day and it was fun for a few hours but really.. it’s a bit grim. I wouldn’t want a week there

CalistoNoSolo · 22/06/2022 16:23

You couldn't pay me enough for me to spend a week in Blackpool. There are a million nicer places in the UK even without going abroad. And if you haven't been back to Blackpool since you were young you may be very disappointed.

oopsfellover · 22/06/2022 16:23

I can understand the allure of Greece over Blackpool but I like a good, nostalgic British seaside visit too. Can you explain your preference in the way you have in your OP?

LimpBiskit · 22/06/2022 16:25

You are being unreasonable as Blackpool is shite

Ilikewinter · 22/06/2022 16:26

I wouldnt want to be in Backpool for a week, do you live close enough to go for a day or if its just for the lights an evening?

emmathedilemma · 22/06/2022 16:27

You say it like you'd get that fix in Blackpool......it's hardly the Costa del Lancashire!
Just do a night or two for the illuminations if you can afford that as well. To be fair, Blackpool is best seen in the dark.

RevoltingHumanHead · 22/06/2022 16:27

I mean given the choice between Blackpool or Greece, Greece would win every time. A week in Blackpool sounds like a loooong time. But I understand your sentimental reasons for wanting to visit and I'm sorry you lost your mum at such a young age. Can you do as a pp suggested and do a day trip or overnighter to Blackpool and then on to Greece?

mrsfoof · 22/06/2022 16:31

How close are you to Blackpool? Would it be feasible to do as a separate weekend trip another time. I would struggle to spend a week there (and I say this as someone who has fond childhood memories of the place but find it a shadow of its former self).

Or could you have a weekend in Blackpool at the beginning / end of your week off and then fly from Manchester to Greece for 5-6 nights?

Ginandslippers · 22/06/2022 16:31

One day/night in Blackpool would be plenty for most people. How about a UK break as a compromise, where you can visit Blackpool for the day. Lake District maybe?

Yodaisawally · 22/06/2022 16:33

A week in Blackpool in September? A night or two, max. What would you do for a week?!

Fairislefandango · 22/06/2022 16:37

^This. I'd rather stay at home. I get that some people like Blackpool, but not everybody would fancy it - maybe your partner feels that way.

Bigsenoritata · 22/06/2022 16:38

YABU, Blackpool is a horribly dirty junkie cesspit.

You couldn't pay me to go to Blackpool - and that's as someone who went a lot as a child. I remember finding it scary and dirty even then.

stripeylipey · 22/06/2022 16:39

Ah no we would only be going Sunday -Tuesday in Blackpool
Not a week.
So only 1 full day and 2 nights

Pippa12 · 22/06/2022 16:41

Crikey, when is the last time you went? We spent an afternoon there a couple of weeks ago, honestly we came home broke and desperate for a wash. The place made my skin crawl!

stripeylipey · 22/06/2022 16:42

I went last year and loved it 🙈
It's just really nostalgic to me...never went any further than the Main Street
I've heard the further back you go it's not very nice anymore.
My gfs logic is we will be spending £350 on hotel for two nights and that could be half way to Greece (if we book a late reduced deal )

OP posts:
Ilikewinter · 22/06/2022 16:45

II dont think you should miss out altogether, can you not just stay for 1 noght?, and I assume the hotel prices are expensive due to the illuminations?, if so can you stay further out if you want to stay 2 nights so that you can still afford Greece?

loveinthe90s · 22/06/2022 16:50

I would be suicidal if my partner suggested Blackpool rather than Greece, but that's just me.

Having said that, how are you spending that much on two nights there? I don't think you could pay that in a hotel there even if you wanted to? It must be one hella hotel to charge that in Blackpool.

Assuming no kids?

MaisyMary77 · 22/06/2022 16:50

I used to live in Blackpool. Wouldn’t go back for more than a day or so. Stay in the Lake District and go to Blackpool one evening? So many beautiful places in the Lake District. Although I’d far rather Greece! 😁

stripeylipey · 22/06/2022 16:53

@loveinthe90s it's called boulevard hotel,it does look nice

stripeylipey · 22/06/2022 16:53

Is £175 per night for a hotel in Blackpool pretty common?

RevoltingHumanHead · 22/06/2022 16:55

Premier Inn for 1 night in Blackpool and then on to Greece.

stripeylipey · 22/06/2022 16:57

No there's loads of cheap b&b
But after staying in a grotty one last year I wanted to stay somewhere nice
