ugly parking causing frustration

Live on a street of semi detached houses. It’s a ‘nice’ area. Most houses have room for 2 cars. Depending on configuration could fit 3, or just 1 if a larger area of garden instead of driveway.

the crux of the matter is that residents are parking on the street. E.g house over the road has room for 1 car on the driveway. They moved in a few years ago and bought the house knowing this. Yet have 2 cars and permanently park 1 on the street outside their house. All in a quite considerate manner btw. But I just think is stupid and inconvenient on their part anyway.

other residents park on the street despite having room on the driveway, presumably because they can’t be bothered reversing in/out every time they want to leave.

house a few doors up inexplicably owns 4(!) cars, with room for only 2 on the drive, with regular visitors too parking all over the place.

when the street is chocked up with cars I just find it so unbecoming and quite frankly ugly . It didn’t used to be like this even 10/15 years ago, when people had only enough cars that they could fit on their driveway…. I feel this was helped by the fact that they were often older couples who only had one car…. and those who invariably buy the house are families and have more cars than they can fit on their property.

so… AIBU to think on-street parking is ugly and ruins the look of the street…?

Maybe move somewhere with no neighbours

Sirzy · 18/06/2022 21:15

You sound like a right snob. Assuming their are no parking restrictions they are doing nothing wrong

HSKAT · 18/06/2022 21:16

What's your solution?

Merryoldgoat · 18/06/2022 21:17

You need a hobby.

oknowimscared · 18/06/2022 21:17

The look of the street? 😂 I assume this is a piss-take, but if not, shut your curtains if it’s that unbearable (you’ll have to do it one-handed as you clutch your pearls with the other). Or move to a deserted island.

mrsbouquett · 18/06/2022 21:17

YANBU op I hate when people park on the road…. The road where cars can be parked 🤔

Notagain76 · 18/06/2022 21:18

totall agree with Sandy but we have more vehicles than drivers. DH has work vehicle and family car and a motorbike DD has car, DS has car and can’t even drive yet but all taxed, mot’d and insured

Our road is now packed with vans and cars. We're very lucky to have drive space for 4 vehicles but 15 years ago the houses round the corner with their drive and space for one car on the road were fine. Now many have children having to live longer with their parents and also more have work vans. So it's a bit of a wrestle out there sometimes. But it's not the fault of people moving into houses with too little parking space - it's modern life.

Noama · 18/06/2022 21:24

Well, I’m sure families with kids in their 20’s/30’s don’t choose to live together but with the cost of buying a house being so high, many people don’t have a choice. But that’s a whole other thread!

Just consider for a minute that not everyone lives the same way, we’re not all one parent working families anymore. A lot of households will have more than one vehicle.

4 cars for one house is awful

Why though? There was a time when we had four vehicles in our household, my ex had his works vehicle, I had a car and so did both kids. None of us worked anywhere near each other, DS and I both worked shifts and we lived in an area with no public transport. How else were we all meant to get to work if we'd only owned one or two car?

Changethenamey · 18/06/2022 21:24

Oops I am a neighbour that does this! Sorry it’s just a pain in the arse playing car jenga 😇

msbevvy · 18/06/2022 21:24

At least it's only cars. My late MIL had enormous vans parked in front of her house blocking all the light in her living room.

My Mum's neighbour used to put notes on cars that dared to park outside her house. She also left notes when they parked outside Mum's house. Mum used to worry that people would think it was her that had left them.
The very same neighbour's son used to park his GLIDER in the road outside Mum's!

MerryMarigold · 18/06/2022 21:25

You'd hate it where I live. There are no drives 😱😱😱 Only on street parking. And you're lucky if you get that!

RaaRaaLaLaLa · 18/06/2022 21:28

I lived on a street like this where for a decade parking was manageable then people's children started getting cars and a couple of people had a van so three cars and it became like a war zone.

No good can come of giving any thought to where other people park. None.

Park your own cars on your own property whenever possible.
Never ever park anywhere out of spite or revenge or to piss someone off.
If you are expecting visitors, park your car somewhere else and then tell your visitors to park on your drive.

How do you sleep at night? You must live in a hovel.

4 cars for one house is awful

Why? My aunt has her two adult children living with her. They have cars as do my aunt and uncle as they all need them for work. It’s entirely reasonable in many circumstances.

Why2why · 18/06/2022 21:39

I know what you mean OP. But the roads here are very narrow so it makes the streets look crammed and gives a feel of overcrowding. I think it’s the width of the streets that’s the problem.

grafittiartist · 18/06/2022 21:40

I thought this about my street too today- it looks so cluttered with cars. Would look beautiful without.
That's life I guess- just have to live with it.
