ugly parking causing frustration

Live on a street of semi detached houses. It’s a ‘nice’ area. Most houses have room for 2 cars. Depending on configuration could fit 3, or just 1 if a larger area of garden instead of driveway.

the crux of the matter is that residents are parking on the street. E.g house over the road has room for 1 car on the driveway. They moved in a few years ago and bought the house knowing this. Yet have 2 cars and permanently park 1 on the street outside their house. All in a quite considerate manner btw. But I just think is stupid and inconvenient on their part anyway.

other residents park on the street despite having room on the driveway, presumably because they can’t be bothered reversing in/out every time they want to leave.

house a few doors up inexplicably owns 4(!) cars, with room for only 2 on the drive, with regular visitors too parking all over the place.

when the street is chocked up with cars I just find it so unbecoming and quite frankly ugly . It didn’t used to be like this even 10/15 years ago, when people had only enough cars that they could fit on their driveway…. I feel this was helped by the fact that they were often older couples who only had one car…. and those who invariably buy the house are families and have more cars than they can fit on their property.

so… AIBU to think on-street parking is ugly and ruins the look of the street…?

No need for cars to have become so big surely?

That's not comparing like to like though! Can't compare a hatchback against a SUV. Bit like comparing a kid's bike with an adult one.

Cars have gotten bigger because of the safety regulations.

Here's a more fair comparison!

1 household does not need 4 cars, end of!

🙄🙄🙄

Give it a rest... At one point my household had five

RudsyFarmer · 19/06/2022 12:02

The price of owning and running a car now must surely be having an impact on those that run four of the things.

ABBAsnumberonefan · 19/06/2022 12:02

This can’t be real 🤣

JaceLancs · 19/06/2022 12:03

I have a long but narrow drive which would fit 6-7 cars
we still park one on the road in front of house as it saves keep moving cars round
Some residents have as many as 5 cars due to adult DC others only have 1
thankfully most park sensibly and it’s only if someone is having a gathering with lots of visitors that there is an issue

At one point my household had five cars (well, technically one was a van)

Both parents worked. Dad was a site joiner and had a van to transport his tools about. He worked all over so a share wasn't an option.

Mam worked as a district nurse and needed a car to get around for that.

I passed my test at 17 and had a car to get to college which was 70 miles away and public transport links just didn't exist between my village and the campus. Now technically my car stayed with me on site but weekends/holidays it was home.

My sister passed her test three years after I did and needed a car for similar reasons. Her boyfriend lived with us for a bit and had his own car for work (worked on a farm, no transport links).

So yeah, for a couple of years we had multiple cars. Not much we could do about it due to shitty public transport and vastly different needs.

Mine's a 2L diesel. Costs me £20 a month in tax, £25 insurance. Diesel is obviously horribly expensive right now but I can get 600 miles from a full tank which last cost me about £80.

I need it - I couldn't get to work without it. Here's a pic of my daily commute.

My neighbours probs hate me too , single parent 3 kids I have a very steep driveway which can fit 2 cars but not safely and a garage I own 3 cars a convertible for summer which is now parked on the road cause I use it on child free weekends tho it spends winter in the garage , my family car for school runs days out etc is on the drive every day as my daily and then a sporty boy racer car that is my pride and joy currently in the garage but sometimes it’s on the street too depending on the weather. I couldn’t care less if my neighbours are inconvenienced at the volume of cars I use and where I park it when I pay my road tax to park wherever I want. You need a hobby OP

You're not on high ground with the snarky "You need a hobby" given that yours seems to be driving about in different cars. Have you considered a less shit hobby?

fyn · 19/06/2022 12:15

You’d hate the street my dad lives on, also ‘nice’ between three houses they have 15 cars! Although the drives can fit four cars on, which they do, still some of the road! All parked perfectly legally, you can think what you like about the parking. There isn’t anything you can do about it.

Why though? There was a time when we had four vehicles in our household, my ex had his works vehicle, I had a car and so did both kids. None of us worked anywhere near each other, DS and I both worked shifts and we lived in an area with no public transport. How else were we all meant to get to work if we'd only owned one or two car?

Exactly. Why?
We are a 4 car household. Me, dh and 2 dds have a car each. 3 on the drive. Don’t see the problem really.
This post is one of the most ridiculous I’ve read tbh.

Mwnci123 · 19/06/2022 12:22

I agree that some households need lots of cars due to poor public transport links and work demands. I'm sceptical as to whether this is the case for all the households with cars up the wazoo, and where I live people often park on pavements even when there is space on their drive. I think it's fair enough for a neighbour to find it a bit irritating and ugly- she's not proposing to impound them.

You need to think about your impact on the environment.

Seeline · 19/06/2022 12:29

Personally I'd much rather see some front gardens left and some on street parking rather than acres of tarmac/paving in front of houses.

Councils have parking requirements for new builds, which usually include allocated parking ie spaces specifically used by individual properties. However, it is a very long time since I've seen any such spaces having to be garages. In fact, they are often discourages, precisely for the reason that they are rarely used for parking. If developers are still providing them, it is because buyers are still wanting them.

RampantIvy · 19/06/2022 12:39

TBH I don't understand why anyone woudn't want to use their drive/garage.

It reduces insurance premiums and it reduces the risk of someone hitting your car. Parking across pavements is a hazard for pedestrians, so if there is room on your drive why wouldn't you use it?

pigsDOfly · 19/06/2022 12:45

Surely this is a windup or do you really go around counting the number of cars the residents in your street own and deciding whether it's a reasonable number or not?

I can honestly say, that apart from my immediate neighbours either side of me, I have no idea how many cars anyone in my road has or where they park them, and care even less.

Cars can't keep moving they have to stop and be parked from time to time and by the side of the road is a good a place as any.

I would strongly suggest you find yourself an absorbing hobby and stop counting cars. Your sound seriously overinvested in your neighbours lives.

@RoxyMoosic ignore those who disagree.

The OP is right, it's well known that sight lines and urban clutter are important. Excessive parked cars and vehicles can create a sense of claustrophobia just as trees and green spaces bring a sense of calm and peace.

that would be absolutely lovely. it would be nice then if

  1. NIMBYs weren’t continuously stopping housing developments

  2. said housing accommodated the realities of modern life including sufficient off street parking

  3. said housing was at an affordable cost to all

so that your dream could become reality. I agree - but you can’t blame individuals for living where they can.

I completely disagree with the OP who says ‘they could have bought x place which would accommodate their life better’. Life is rarely that simplistic and there might be multiple other reasons why those homes were not suitable. It’s those people don’t focus on the same things.

RudsyFarmer · 19/06/2022 12:02

Yep, but millions of people live in places where they have no choice but to run multiple cars, no matter how expensive it is to do so.

SwanBuster · 19/06/2022 12:59

But yeah - what a myopic post. It would be great if our family could afford a house with sufficient off road parking for our needs - and we have 2 cars, which isn’t outrageous for a family of 6 with school age kids and one stay at home parent.

We can’t - despite a very high income. and that’s thanks to insane housing costs. And we can’t pave our front garden either. Because we rent.

Because our drive out of the back of our house and is regularly blocked by people parking their works' vehicles on the back street, blocking us in.

So no, I don't use our driveway because I've had too many mornings where I've been late for work as I can't get out of my own drive.

Daftasabroom · 19/06/2022 13:00

@SwanBuster I agree with both you and the OP.

You'd love my street. Every house has a drive, people from flats in surrounding streets leave their cars here. Sometimes for weeks! If they're taxed and legally parked then they can (until the council make it permit parking).

It's the same with where we live. Apart from not everyone has a drive including us. Also we're near a hospital so visitors often park there. OP you don't own the roads, it really doesn't matter unless it's obstructing anything or unsafe. Like other posters have said, there could be a weak generations living in one house hence 4 cars and it isn't really your business
