To think a short reverse in a car park is fine?

Was at a local garden centre today. P&C spaces are few and far between at this place and as I passed I saw a woman (no kids 🙄) get into her car.

I was level with/ front end of my car just past hers. I shouted over and asked if she was about to leave and she said she was, so I reversed a few metres to let her out.

As I'm doing so a man in a Chelsea Tractor came round the corner and starts hammering on his horn while gesturing angrily and trying to keep moving forward.

I got out and explained I was moving back to let her out and got a sneery "it's a one way system" and having a right go.

Now I could have gone round the whole car park but would have lost the gold dust p&c space I needed for DS.

AIBU to think that even in one-way car parks a small amount of reversing is not only normal but to be expected?

He just wanted the parking space for himself. Actually it's better reversing into a parking space than out. I think it's safer.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 17/06/2022 17:05

It's OK for a short while unless you're blocking someone. As soon as you realise you're in someone's way you do the right thing and move immediately. .I can't believe you got out of the car instead of just doing the right thing and moving straight away

Sirzy · 17/06/2022 17:05

Reversing near a corner on a one way system doesn’t sound ideal!

edenhills · 17/06/2022 17:12

Is this a reverse?

HangOnToYourself · 17/06/2022 17:14

Erm no YABU you are lucky you didnt cause an accident

TooManyPJs · 17/06/2022 17:15

Of course it's fine.

Plus one way systems on car parks is only advisory anyway. I regularly go the wrong way if I need to nip into a space.

Pootles34 · 17/06/2022 17:16

Reversing aside, blocking up a car park whilst waiting for a space is so annoying!

ThinWomansBrain · 17/06/2022 17:17

wot - no diagram?

HangOnToYourself · 17/06/2022 17:19

I also hate nobs who sit waiting for you to leave the second you get in your car. I usually need to set my sat nav and these wankers will sit honking at you impatiently while blocking everyone else. They also never give you enough room all because they feel entitled to the space.

He didn't have kids. And I was reversing along the road part rather than out of a space - I always reverse into spaces anyway

Sirzy · 17/06/2022 17:22

Why didn’t you drive forward of the space if you where planning on reversing in anyway?

What for the 30 seconds it would have taken the woman to move out?

Also I wasn't reversing anywhere near the actual corner. He came round the corner, saw me - and kept moving forward.

The distance from me to the corner was about 10 metres. (Me to the space was about two.

So the car leaving the space could actually leave the car park. If I stop past her then I'm blocking her from coming out.

It depends on how the spaces are arranged, you don't reverse into the herringbone type layouts, that would cause confusion all round Smile

Sirzy · 17/06/2022 17:26

So it wasn’t the reversing that was the problem but you sitting blocking the car park meaning nobody else could go anywhere

I’m assuming If the car park was one way there wouldn’t then be enough space for the car she needed to leave to pass her.

i can’t see how you’re being unreasonable. If you were checking your mirrors and not actually reversing into someone. I always expect reversing cars in a car park

MrszClaus · 17/06/2022 17:27

Reversing around a one way system by a corner sounds silly, I wouldn't do it.

Surely if you reverse into the space, being slightly forward of it was fine and there was no need to reverse anyway?

OP wasn't reversing into a space

Tothemoonandbackx · 17/06/2022 17:32

I think some people are massively missing the point of this thread, you moved slightly back to let someone out of the space they were occupying. Are there people on here that are actually saying they'd miss the opportunity to park in a space when there are non around and risk someone else going in it, because let's be fair, there are lots of ignorant a**holes that park in P&C spaces when they've got no kids in the car.YA unequivocally NBU X

AmaryIlis · 17/06/2022 17:35

As the driver of the big car didn't follow you round the corner he presumably didn't expect to see you there, let alone stationary. If you were preventing him from moving forward as well I can see why it was quite annoying.

RagingWoke · 17/06/2022 17:40

YANBU, he was probably chancing it so you'd move and he could get the space.

It's not unsuitable for someone to pause and let another out of their space in a car park, and everyone should be driving at an appropriate speed that they can stop in plenty of time.

Classical overly dramatic MN replies, I don't know how some posters get through life. Unreasonable for letting someone out of a parking space 😂

This.

I would have done the same as you.

Does no one use their eyes anymore?!

GCRich · 17/06/2022 17:51

YABU. Man. Chelsea tractor. You should have moved to the side and curtsied as you let him pass you and get on with his very important day.

Reversing absolutely was the problem - he said so when he said "it's one way".

As for holding up the car park, where are you all in such a hurry to get to that 30 seconds is a major inconvenience worth raising your blood pressure over?

The woman was already starting to back out of the space. If he looked further than the end of his bonnet he'd have seen that, never mind have spotted my car reversing when he rounded the corner - and took the decision to keep driving along the road towards me. As I said I was a fair distance from the actual corner.

He sounds like an arse and you did nothing wrong. I'd have done the same don't be intimidated by men in big cars. YADNBU.
