I’m asking aibu for footfall .
my dad had dark brown eyes and my mum had pale blue eyes . My eyes are bright green ! I was looking at eye colour charts as my first grandchild has just been born and we were guessing with her parents what colour her eyes will be . I discovered on loads of charts that my parents eye colours make it impossible for them to have had a green eyed child .
if you were me would you now be wondering wtf !!!! Anyone have a scientific explanation ????

I also have very green eyes. One of my parents had blue eyes and and one very brown eyes. One of my siblings also has green eyes, and the other has blue eyes.

I'm 99.9% certain my parents are my birth parents, I look like both of them (apart from the eyes!)

minuette1 · 16/06/2022 23:23

I have dark brown eyes, my husband has blue and our eldest DC has green eyes. He is definitely our biological son! Both his grandfathers had green eyes though.

ReturnfromtheStars · 16/06/2022 23:25

Eye genetics are a bit more complicated than we are made to believe in science class in school. Your scenario is completely possible. I'll try to find a link.

Sniffypete · 16/06/2022 23:26

I have green eyes. Mum had blue eyes and dad brown.
Confirmed by dna tests that they are both my parents.

Threetulips · 16/06/2022 23:26

All the charts say it’s impossible

ReturnfromtheStars · 16/06/2022 23:28

Is eye color determined by genetics?

Nutsabouttopic · 16/06/2022 23:28

Both my husband and I have deep brown eyes. Three of the grandparents have brown eyes and one had light blue eyes. First child has deep blue eyes, second has dark brown, third has green and fourth has hazel. I cried once because a neighbour told me that first couldn't be my husbands child because it was genetically impossible for our child not to have brown eyes. Believe me I would remember if there had been another candidate for fatherhood. Enjoy your memories of your parents and congratulations on your grandchild

ofwarren · 16/06/2022 23:29

Do you look like your parents?

JaninaDuszejko · 16/06/2022 23:32

Scientist hat on. The charts are wrong and simplified. A brown eyed parent and a blue eyed parent can have children with pretty much any eye colour, we certainly do.

Gonnabegrandma · 16/06/2022 23:33

Thank you everyone . I have stopped freaking out now ! Did some more looking as everyone above has said it’s possible if not common . I’m happy now and even if the truth was something else I won’t dig an deeper as I was blessed with my parents and brown eyes bother 😀gosh I do feel much better thank you mumsnet

Eye colour is a lot more complex than gcse biology would have you think.

I have blue eyes, ds’s dad has brown eyes. DS has green eyes. DS definitely came out of me and there is no doubt about who his father is!

Snozzlemaid · 16/06/2022 23:34

Another one here with green eyes.
My mum's are brown and my dad's were blue.

LemonSwan · 16/06/2022 23:35

My dad was light grey blue eyes, mum green, me dark blue with an amber orange streak, sister dark brown. We do laugh she has been adopted because everything about her is unlike the rest of us - beautiful straight hair, olive skin which tans beautifully. Nothing like the curly pale rest of us.

But she’s 100% my sister, has my dads hallmark nose and lips. Actually looks very similar to a close cousin so just got the lucky hidden family genes.

ofwarren · 16/06/2022 23:36

Come to think of it, my mum's eyes are blue and my dad's are brown and mine are green!
We are definitely related as I've done dna tests via ancestry.

5zeds · 16/06/2022 23:37

What colour are your grandparents eyes from your brown eyed parent?

Edinvillian · 16/06/2022 23:38

I have green, my husband has blue and our son has brown. The chart said this wasn't possible but it happened so it is 😆

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 16/06/2022 23:41

Not true. My stepfather has dark brown eyes, my mother blue. My half sister has green eyes. You find this a lot if there is Asian blood somewhere in the past.

TabithaTittlemouse · 16/06/2022 23:41

Dh has green eyes. His mum had brown eyes. His dad has blue eyes.
one of my siblings has green eyes. Mum has brown eyes, our dad has blue eyes. 3 of us have brown eyes, 2 have blue and one green.

Longdistance · 16/06/2022 23:42

My dm has brown eyes, my df had sparkly blue eyes and I have green eyes. I look a mix my df and dm. My dds have green and blue eyes, dh has blue eyes.

BreadInCaptivity · 16/06/2022 23:42

My eye genetics are the same as yours.

I have green eyes and parents with brown/blue eyes.

They are definitely my biological parents.

As pp's have said, the eye charts are very generalised and pretty worthless.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 16/06/2022 23:42

Mind you I did ancestry DNA and found my mother had lied for years about my father.

Delphigirl · 16/06/2022 23:43

My eyes are brown, DHs blue, DS’s are green like my mothers and my brothers, there is no question at all about his paternity!

Changechangychange · 16/06/2022 23:46

DF had green eyes, DM had brown eyes, DBro and I have blue eyes.

DH has brown eyes, I have blue eyes, DS has green eyes.

If eye genetics was that straightforward there wouldn’t be a whole spectrum of eye colours - brown, hazel, violet, green, grey, grey-green, grey-blue, dark blue, light blue…

Gonnabegrandma · 16/06/2022 23:49

My mums dad had blue eyes my mums mother we don’t know as she died having my mum.
my dads mum and dad both had brown eyes I think

all my grandparents had died by the time I was 4 so I have no memories or other relatives to tell me
maybe I should be worrying about the family health rather than eye colours !!!

My eyes are very green. My father had dark brown eyes and my mum had pale blue eyes. We've all had our DNA done and we are definitely parents and kid.
