I’m asking aibu for footfall .
my dad had dark brown eyes and my mum had pale blue eyes . My eyes are bright green ! I was looking at eye colour charts as my first grandchild has just been born and we were guessing with her parents what colour her eyes will be . I discovered on loads of charts that my parents eye colours make it impossible for them to have had a green eyed child .
if you were me would you now be wondering wtf !!!! Anyone have a scientific explanation ????

This is exact description too Green eyes. child of one parent with blue eyes and one parent with brown eyes.
But I don't know why you'd conclude that that's not possible.

blue eyed parent has two recessive genes for blue eyes

the parent with brown eyes, I inherited their recessive eye gene (green is also recessive to brown but blue is recessive to green)

Anyway, I'm the spit of me Da

My dad,mum and sister have brown eyes but I have grey. DH and I have grey eyes and ds has brown! I think charts are pretty basic.

Watch the latest episode of DNA Secrets on iPlayer (or maybe the one before) there's a really good explanation on there from their DNA specialist as to why looks should never be taken as a 'guarantee' when it comes to heritage or ancestry.

My eyes are very dark brown, my mum's are a mid brown colour and my dad's are grey with a hint of blue.

DD's dad had pale blue eyes.

DD1 has greeny blue eyes which apparently are exactly like her paternal grandmother's and DD2 has hazely green eyes which are apparently exactly like MY paternal grandfather's. As DD2 has got older her eyes have got a bit more brown at times but they still change depending on the light, whereas mine never have. Mine were even really dark at birth and never blue looking like other babies according to my mum.

OneTitWonder · 17/06/2022 00:00

I have dark brown eyes, my husband very blue eyes, and our son has green eyes. I can guarantee we are definitely his biological parents, having been present for both the conception and the birth. My mother had green eyes exactly the same shade as my son, so I assume that's who he's inherited them from.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 17/06/2022 00:03

Yes.

My mum has icy blue eyes and blonde hair and is pale.

My dad has black hair, brown eyes, dark tanned (white though) skin.

My sister is auburn with bright green eyes, freckles, pale.

Im light brown hair, grey eyes, yellow toned skin that tans.

Both my sister and I resemble both parents facially and height/bodies.

Genetics are funny things.

Bunty55 · 17/06/2022 00:17

I am the chip off the old block. I look like my dad. He had hazel eyes and my mother had grey eyes.
My siblings all have grey eyes
Mine are green

Eightiesfan · 17/06/2022 00:19

Brown eyes are dominant but there are always exceptions. Both my parents have brown eyes, my brothers and I also have brown eyes, but our sister has deep blue almost violet eyes.

I always thought that if both parents had blue eyes then it was genetically impossible for their child to have any other eye colour than blue. My son set me straight from what he’d learnt in GCSE biology!

User3568975431146 · 17/06/2022 00:19

My children all have blue eyes as do I but their dad has green eyes and my grandfather and two of my aunts had brown eyes so in the future, genetically, their children could have brown, blue or green eyes.

Sometimes you have to look past the parents and a bit further down the line.

We're two dark brown eyed parents with one blue eyed and one green eyed child. Genetics is complicated!

FlumpyLump · 17/06/2022 00:22

My parents have very dark brown eyes. Mine are green. My brothers are brown like theirs.

My great grandmother on my mother's side had the same green eyes as mine.

But bc brown eyes are dominant having a blue eyed child is thus perfectly possible. See my post!
Did your son imply that two blue eyed parents can have a brown eyed child bc AFAIK they wouldn't. Green, just maybe.

SherbertLemonDrop · 17/06/2022 00:27

I have brown eyes the same as dad, my mum has blue and my sisters have green.

Snowballtorch · 17/06/2022 00:27

I am one of three green eyed siblings, with one brown eyed and one blue eyed parent. There is no doubt they are our parents.

entropynow · 17/06/2022 00:28

Dominant just means the override works for the individual. Two recessive genes can, and do, combine.
We're also both right handed and both kids are lefties.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/06/2022 00:30

I have very dark brown eyes and my ex husband has blue eyes. My son has green eyes and is 100% definitely the son of both of us. My daughter has blue eyes.

This is possible I think as my Mum has greenish eyes (kind of grey- green)

Pbbananabagel · 17/06/2022 00:31

My dad had black hair and brown eyes, my mum had darkest brown/black hair and amber eyes. I have grey green eyes and naturally dirty blond hair but I have done the ancestry test and they are definitely my parents! Genes are weird

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 17/06/2022 00:32

You are not alone, my sister and I both have very green eyes.

My Mum has pale blue eyes, my Dad dark brown.

Mamanyt · 17/06/2022 00:34

You are not being unreasonable to wonder, but eye color genetics are a bit complicated. For instance, if one grandparent, or great-grandparent on BOTH sides had green eyes (recessive trait), it is entirely possible for a descendant to have green eyes.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 17/06/2022 00:45

DH has brown eyes. I have green eyes.
DD1 has brown eyes and DD2 has blue.
Like PP have said, it's not always straightforward
