AIBU to ask you about jet2 and seat sizes

AIBU for traffic,

Flying jet2 and thinking about the seatbelt fitting... I'm on the bigger side and might die of embarrassment if I have to ask for an extender!
Last time we flew jet2 I was pregnant and it fit (although a bit tight but I blamed the bump!). Sitting next to my toddler so space isn't too much of an issue and I'll be encroaching on his legroom as plane seats aren't built for my 33" leg at the best of times!

Anyone flew jet2 recently and struggled with the belt?

Ask discreetly when you board if you feel self conscious asking in full earshot of your fellow passengers. If then belt fits without it then great, you don’t have to use it but you’ll have it if you need it and won’t have to worry about asking. Although I can assure you that no one actually gives a shit.

Twizbe · 13/06/2022 13:30

Please don't worry about this.

If you need an extender there's no reason to be embarrassed to ask for it. The cabin crew want you to be comfortable and safe.

They will quietly and discretely hand you the extender and then no one else needs to know.

Have a look at Jess on the plus size on Instagram. She talks about this lots and how much of a non issue it is with cabin crew.

FawnFrenchieMum · 13/06/2022 13:33

My DH & I have just flew Jet2 and were nicely surprised by the seat room, we are both quite large (size 22ish for me, DH quite a large round tummy) and both fit without a seat belt extender and could put the table down without it touching our belly (unlike TUI last time we went with them).
As someone else suggested, if your worried, ask for one quietly on boarding and don't use it if not needed.

RampantIvy · 13/06/2022 13:36

I find Jet2 a little more roomy than other charter flight airlines. Have a nice holiday.

RagingWoke · 13/06/2022 13:53

Thank you, it's good to hear it's not an issue. I have this image of everyone staring at the fatty who needs the 'big belt' 😳 it's a double squash being tall too, knees and butt jammed in 😬

@Twizbe I love Jess on the plus size! (I used to work with her many moons ago and she is just the most lovely person)

You can buy seat belt extender on Amazon before you go so you don't have to ask

Yodaisawally · 13/06/2022 14:05

You'll prob be fine but if you are genuinely worried you can get one on Amazon. I'm sure I read somewhere airlines only carry four so if five people need them I'm not sure what would happen!

FWIW I'm tall, and have been a 10 to a 20 at various times and never need one

HighSea · 13/06/2022 14:38

Do Jet2 do extra leg room seat? We usually fly with Tui and always book extra leg room seats thinking off booking with Jet2 for the end of this year as after seeing all the negative reports in the news I have lost confidence.

The seatbelt extenders are the same as the infant seatbelts, they will have a lot more than that. I was cabin crew a long time ago and I'm sure on our aircraft we had to have 16 or 20 (can't remember the exact number), we couldn't take off if we didn't have a certain number. Even if there were 16 babies on the flight the crew will also have infant seatbelts in their demo kits that can be used.

WillowKnicks · 13/06/2022 15:03

I flew with Ryanair 2 weeks ago & had the same worry, so bought a seat belt extender from Amazon. Luckily it wasn't needed but I felt better for having it

TheSummerPalace · 13/06/2022 15:07

Yes, we have just been on holiday with Jet 2 and we had extra legroom seats. We were on a Boeing 737 - they were the front row, and the row near the wings with the emergency exit. We’ve booked to go again in April 23 and have booked our extra legroom seats already!

Our experience with Jet 2 was great! No negative experience at all! (Although we did check in online in advance, book Fast Track security and guaranteed Cabin for hand luggage, and pre-ordered meals)

coldandverytired · 13/06/2022 15:13

I wouldn’t worry about needing an extender; the crew will be discrete, I was a generous size 22/24 and flew jet2 to turkey for bariatric surgery, I fit fine and didn’t need an extender (it was even loose on my way home 😁)

Twizbe · 13/06/2022 16:29

@RagingWoke lol - she's my godchildren's aunt so I've met her at a few of the family dos over the years.

Yes they do, but with 4 of us flying it was a bit pricey to upgrade to extra leg room all round haha

HighSea · 13/06/2022 17:00

@RagingWoke thank you. We upgraded with Tui for our summer holiday when we booked, I think it cost us just over £550 in total for all 5 of us travelling but money well spent as dh is 6ft 3

Yes. We flew with Jet2 in April and I paid for extra legroom as DS is 6'4".
It cost me £30 per person each way so £180 for 3 of us.

RagingWoke · 13/06/2022 17:03

In hindsight I should have just forked out. Dh is 6'3", I'm 5'10" and dc are small but fidgety. It was £95 per seat each way though 😳

ZealAndArdour · 13/06/2022 17:08

Just beware that if you’ve booked the extra leg room seats in the middle of the plane near the escape doors then you’re no longer allowed to sit there if you need an extender.

Twizbe · 13/06/2022 17:48

We're flying with jet2 in august. We got extra legroom for him 6'7 but not for the rest of us as kids are too young for exit row seats

And under 16s can't sit in those seats either. DH is 6'2" with most of his height in his legs, so he always books extra legroom seats.

JuneJubilee · 13/06/2022 18:03

@RagingWoke I have just resigned myself to asking one of the crew when boarding. Sometimes they're discrete & sometimes not, but I just remind myself I'm not going to see these people again.

I was told the airlines don't like you using bought ones as they're not safety checked, so I haven't bought one.

Realistically asking or not asking for a seat-belt extender is not going to make anyone see you as bigger or smaller.

Please don't do this. Just get the legit one of you need

Outoutoutshout · 13/06/2022 18:21

I've never had an issue on any airline (including Jet2). I'm a larger size 20 and all my weight is around my middle too. You'll probably be absolutely fine.

notimagain · 14/06/2022 09:24

I was told the airlines don't like you using bought ones (seatbelt extenders) as they're not safety checked, so I haven't bought one.

For info seatbelts, extenders etc go though an approval process of sorts and any held by companies will be subject to examination/renewal on some sort of routine basis. Eyebrows may well be raised by the crew if somebody attempts to modify the approved installation with the addition of an extender of unknown provenance, even if it looks like a direct copy of what the crew have on board.

Some US airlines have specifically banned the use of those brought on board by individuals and insist on the use of the airline supplied item.
