AIBU to ask for a refund for my hair?

I went to a local independent salon this week to get a balayage and cut, first time since before DC was born end of 2021 so I was very excited! I’d never been there before but the salon owner/stylist had good reviews.

At end of cut and colour the stylist insisted on curling my hair, and with the mixture of the curls and the soft salon lighting I didn’t notice how choppy and uneven it was. As soon as I got home and had a proper look I realised that she had done a really bad job and it’s not the natural looking balayage I’d asked for.

I’ve since been messaging the salon owner to let her know how unhappy I am, and have also been back to show her what I’m not happy with.

Not only did she play down how bad it was, but the only option she is currently offering is for her to ‘fix’ my hair by trying again, however I don’t trust her to try again and have instead asked for a refund so I can get it fixed somewhere else. She has no employees, it’s just her, so there’s nobody else there that could try to fix it.

Looking at what she did the first time (which took 4 hours, and cost me £160) I haven’t got the confidence in her to fix it, so I asked for a refund, but she is currently refusing - although asked for the weekend to seek advice on what her next steps might be. So she might decide next week to refund me, or might decide that she legally doesn’t have to since she has offered to fix it - and that’s that.

Not sure if photos will do it justice? But it’s choppy, patchy all over including underneath, yellow and grey in parts, and all a little too Friar Tuck. Plus the cut is uneven too! I’ve been left feeling quite sad after being so excited for this first little treat since DC was born!

AIBU to want a refund so that I can get this fixed somewhere else?

It looks like your highlights are really outgrown. I can see why you’re not happy.

girlmom21 · 11/06/2022 21:08

I'm sorry OP but that's horrific and if she's prepared to 'fix' it she knows it's bad. 100% you deserve your money back.

Geordielass1987 · 11/06/2022 21:10

I am a hairdresser, I started reading this thread and honestly I rolled my eyes and then I looked at the pictures! Oh my god! Do not let her touch your hair again you absolutely need a refund!

Lizzieismagic · 11/06/2022 21:10

Suggest she refunds or your online reviews will be very honest.

Savoretti · 11/06/2022 21:11

Can’t see the cut but the colour looks dreadful - not balayage at all. More like grown out highlights
I’d definitely not want her to try and fix it either - stick to your guns for a refund

Amipreg1 · 11/06/2022 21:12

I can see why you're not happy. The colour looks like is hasn't been blended well at all. Did she backcomb the sections before applying the bleach?

Hopefully she will refund you but if not I'd definitely leave an honest review on Facebook or wherever.

HairRaisin · 11/06/2022 21:13

Thank you, I really hate confrontation too so it took a lot for me to walk into the salon and speak to her about this!

I'm sorry OP, it looks awful. I usually come on hair threads and think the OP is overreacting, but not in this case. The colour is dreadful. I'd want a full refund.

latetothefisting · 11/06/2022 21:15

Agree with the others- it looks like highlights (and bad, blocky, grown out highlights at that!) rather than balayage!

Hopefully she'll decide its not worth the potential negative publicity not to refund you...

WhatNowwwww · 11/06/2022 21:16

Sorry OP I agree it looks terrible. I feel for you, it’s awful when a hair appointment goes wrong! You definitely deserve a refund.
As others have said it looks nothing like balayage. It looks like highlights done badly that have grown out for a few months.

HairRaisin · 11/06/2022 21:18

Here’s a few photos showing the cut too! 😅

Do you have a before pic and one of what you wanted? I'm not a hair dresser, but it looks like highlights which have grown out and the darker roots are coming through. The crown hair looks extremely thin and I can see the scalp. Did any hair fall out during the treatment, or do you have thin hair anyways? I wouldnt let her touch it again.

Janedoe82 · 11/06/2022 21:19

Looks awful

KyaClark · 11/06/2022 21:20

The cut is even worse than the highlights. Fucking hell!

Oh my! Is she even qualified?!

HairRaisin · 11/06/2022 21:20

MarmiteCoriander I have suffered with quite a bit of postpartum hair loss sadly, though my hair has always been quite thin! Not sure if much came out during the dying but it’s possible!

this made me laugh, why? Her complaint is still valid without her posting pics here

UrsulaPandress · 11/06/2022 21:21

😱

The cut.

She said she has 15 years experience!

Honestly I think the colour is easily fixable, just needs either another session of highlights or pulling the root colour down, whichever you prefer. It doesn’t look like a balayage but more a full head of highlights. That cut is tragic though? Can’t believe she let you leave like that!

AthenaPopodopolous · 11/06/2022 21:23

Cuts awful, worse than the ‘baylayage’. I’d insist on a refund but she might not have the cash to refund you if you leave it any longer.
if so, cut your losses. Go elsewhere.

Savoretti · 11/06/2022 21:24

Oh my goodness the cut is dreadful too. And soo blonde at the ends
I’m so so sorry for you. To be honest even if she does refund you I think you should leave negative reviews just to alert other potential clients.
You could post photos - if she feel that cut and colour is acceptable then she can take it as advertising

Popsicle33 · 11/06/2022 21:24

Disgraceful! Please fight for your money back! A child could've done a better job than that.

Iamnotamermaid · 11/06/2022 21:25

The baylayage is bad but the cut is even worse. I think I gave myself a better cut during lockdown.
