AIBU to ask for a refund for my hair?

I went to a local independent salon this week to get a balayage and cut, first time since before DC was born end of 2021 so I was very excited! I’d never been there before but the salon owner/stylist had good reviews.

At end of cut and colour the stylist insisted on curling my hair, and with the mixture of the curls and the soft salon lighting I didn’t notice how choppy and uneven it was. As soon as I got home and had a proper look I realised that she had done a really bad job and it’s not the natural looking balayage I’d asked for.

I’ve since been messaging the salon owner to let her know how unhappy I am, and have also been back to show her what I’m not happy with.

Not only did she play down how bad it was, but the only option she is currently offering is for her to ‘fix’ my hair by trying again, however I don’t trust her to try again and have instead asked for a refund so I can get it fixed somewhere else. She has no employees, it’s just her, so there’s nobody else there that could try to fix it.

Looking at what she did the first time (which took 4 hours, and cost me £160) I haven’t got the confidence in her to fix it, so I asked for a refund, but she is currently refusing - although asked for the weekend to seek advice on what her next steps might be. So she might decide next week to refund me, or might decide that she legally doesn’t have to since she has offered to fix it - and that’s that.

Not sure if photos will do it justice? But it’s choppy, patchy all over including underneath, yellow and grey in parts, and all a little too Friar Tuck. Plus the cut is uneven too! I’ve been left feeling quite sad after being so excited for this first little treat since DC was born!

AIBU to want a refund so that I can get this fixed somewhere else?

Show her this thread if she refuses, universal agreement that it’s a very bad job and she must refund you to get it fixed elsewhere!

Honestly I think the colour is easily fixable, just needs either another session of highlights or pulling the root colour down, whichever you prefer. It doesn’t look like a balayage but more a full head of highlights. That cut is tragic though? Can’t believe she let you leave like that!

She was in a hurry towards the end as she had somewhere else to be, she actually left the car park of the salon before me and sped away in her car as she was running late! I wonder if this had something to do with the cut as she realised the time and then was rushing!

I'd push for a refund and leave an honest review

Anything over £100 always pay on your credit card Visa or MasterCard will go into battle for you on these things and get you your money back

Nein9 · 11/06/2022 21:28

My first thought was also that it looked like highlights that have grown out, definitely not balayage!

ginghamstarfish · 11/06/2022 21:28

Please do get a refund by whatever means. This person should not be charging money to do hair as she is clearly unfit to do so.

Geordielass1987 · 11/06/2022 21:29

@blugray balayage can vary entirely person to person. It’s also relatively new ish. And you’d be surprised the amount of people who go for hair on a Saturday because they are going out and then try for a refund! Not saying that about the op but it does happen. Some people can look for fault and pick the tiniest little thing. Hairdressers aren’t robots. But the standard this lady has received is disgusting obviously

mustBeACat · 11/06/2022 21:29

Oh op you poor thing you absolutely deserve your money back. It can be saved but only by a good hairdresser. Please don’t let the same one try to fix it xx

42isthemeaning · 11/06/2022 21:29

I don't know much about hair dye, balayage, etc. but that haircut is dreadful! Please pursue getting your money back via trading standards if necessary!

Tiani4 · 11/06/2022 21:30

That's awful, both the colour and the cut. It looks like a before picture!!

I wouldn't let her touch your hair again but request a refund.

Forestgate · 11/06/2022 21:30

So sorry OP but I agree it's terrible aside from the money so annoying you spent so much time there only to have to go elsewhere anyway. Hope you can find someone good to sort it

Ihatethenewlook · 11/06/2022 21:31

I’d definitely be taking to social media over this if she doesn’t refund you

Vikinga · 11/06/2022 21:31

The balayage is awful and the haircut is even worse. I'm not a hairdresser but can cut hair better than that!! At least evenly. Can't believe it was so expensive too. I would definitely push until you get your money back and wouldn't let her near my hair again.

Miracle101 · 11/06/2022 21:32

She has 15 minutes experience.

Usually when these threads come up I don't think the hair is too bad but in my opinion you are completely justified in your experience.

I think you should push for the refund. It will be a small price to pay for her versus you putting a review with these pictures online, naming her salon and potentially putting her out of business.

Miracle101 · 11/06/2022 21:33

Experience should have been opinion. Clearly more tired than I knew.

Rosehugger · 11/06/2022 21:33

I'd get better results with a £7 box of dye and the kitchen scissors. I'd write and ask for a refund, sending photos, and get another salon to fix it.

ChatterMonkey · 11/06/2022 21:34

Oh my goodness thats bad...

Sorry i normally look at threads like this and think the op is over reacting, and when reading the posts was all for replying saying if they have offered to fix then you dont get a refund, but after seeing the pictures of both the colour and the cut, i totally understand why you dont want her anywhere near your hair again.

Carry on chasing for a refund, but not sure where you would stand if she refused unfortunately. Small claims maybe?

This is why i have the fear about new hairdressers.

StoneofDestiny · 11/06/2022 21:36

It's awful - sorry. Insist on a refund.

fedup078 · 11/06/2022 21:37

Was she drunk ? I seriously think I could have done a better job with zero hairdressing experience
Not sure what platforms she uses like Facebook etc but have you checked for other reviews, google reviews also?

Sorrynotsorry2 · 11/06/2022 21:38

You need a refund. Nothing what you asked for so sorry op that's awful

HairRaisin · 11/06/2022 21:39

This is the photo I showed her of what I wanted, although I did say that I know it probably couldn’t go that light!

She asked to see the photo again when I went back to complain and she told me that the photo is part of the reason the dye is so high up, just like the photo!

Yes I think I’ll keep chasing! Totally justified fear I’d say!

My 4 yo would have done a better job. Refund or not you are obliged to warn the others. This is appalling 😵
