To think the kitchen were deliberately trolling her?

DD is vegan. She went for dinner with a friend at Wetherspoons last night. She ordered a vegan burger. When she took a second bite she bit into a piece of streaky bacon in the middle of the burger. It’s hard to see how that could have happened accidentally. She sent it back politely and a new one was brought out. The server said ‘I hope it’s vegan this time!’. She opened it up and there was a piece of bacon in the middle again.

DD is very quiet and conflict averse some said nothing and ended up just paying the bill and leaving. She wishes she had made more of a fuss though.

I can’t see how this could have been accidental, twice. It definitely feels as though someone in the kitchen was trolling her. AIBU to think this?

Being a little faceatious here, but if you look at how their vegan buger is made, i would be glad of the bacon as it seems far more naturally produced than the plant-based mash that is the burger!

But yes, OP, poor service

Missing the point but don't you pay first in wetherspoons and isn't the food all pre-prepared and just nuked in the microwave?

Anyway, poor DD, I'd send an email to complain as for her it's a gross/ruined evening, but if the kitchen are dicking around with allergens too, that could be lethal.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/06/2022 07:27

I have a friend who orders vegan options as she has a dairy allergy.

Its not funny to mess around with people orders.

MargotMoon · 09/06/2022 07:28

Did she take photos? I'd complain.

Discovereads · 09/06/2022 07:29

I’m going to trust your DD that it was real bacon and say that is completely unacceptable of Weatherspoons. She should not have paid the bill. She should lodge a formal complaint against that specific pub.

Aprilx · 09/06/2022 07:31

I think it is poor service, but no I doubt it was on purpose, I think it is a consequence of how their kitchen is set up for mass production.

Just a little anecdote, I was in a hotel for work once and ordered a chicken salad from room service. It arrived without chicken, so I called down and asked for it to be replaced. It came back without chicken …. and not once but twice more! I was persistent though and got my chicken on fourth attempt.

ComDummings · 09/06/2022 07:31

I think the burgers pre prepared so seems like a supplier issue

IstayedForTheFeminism · 09/06/2022 07:31

My ex used to work delivering for a pizza company (before I met him). Apparently the guys in the kitchen thought it was hysterical to cut the veggie pizza with the meat cutter. Some people are twats.

I'd never be glad to eat animal flesh. What a ridiculous thing to say.

Send a complaint and leave a review to warn others, that was not nice especially if done deliberately

Louise0701 · 09/06/2022 07:31

@Discovereads you pay when you order in Wetherspoons so OPs DD didn’t have the option of not paying.

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2022 07:37

I think it was probably just rubbish communication, I can't see them doing it on purpose-they would have known she'd check.

kennelmaid · 09/06/2022 07:39

@Moithered

Crass, ignorant, smug post.

Bernadettebleu · 09/06/2022 07:39

Yes she took photos and yes it was definitely bacon - her friend confirmed! She is going to complain today. She isn’t allergic but agree that it’s not funny to mess around with food like that as it could make someone ill.

is she sure it isnt vegan bacon?
would she know?

Oops yes forgot that Weatherspoons don’t allow tabs. Haven’t been in one in years. Well she should have demanded a refund then.

TabithaTittlemouse · 09/06/2022 07:44

This is always my worry when eating out.
Definitely complain and leave a review to say what happened to warn others.

She'd know. There are some half decent plant based meat alternatives, but none where you would honestly mistake them for the real thing, especially not bacon, which is the hardest to get right.

MichelleScarn · 09/06/2022 07:47

Missing the point but don't you pay first in wetherspoons and isn't the food all pre-prepared and just nuked in the microwave?

Yep! And you get a receipt when you pay does she still have it?

sunglassesonthetable · 09/06/2022 07:49

Oops yes forgot that Weatherspoons don’t allow tabs. Haven’t been in one in years. Well she should have demanded a refund then.

Yep, Obviously. But you didn't read where OP says "she's very quiet and conflict averse".

Brefugee · 09/06/2022 07:53

I think it was probably just rubbish communication, I can't see them doing it on purpose-they would have known she'd check.

Bollocks. If you order a Vegan Burger what you get should be a Vegan Burger. And if you can't see them doing it on purpose, i have a bridge you might be interested in.

But. Why are so many people so passive and "conflict averse"? What is the problem with saying: i would like to speak to the kitchen manager? I see that so often here and wonder, really, how children are being brought up. In 2 generations there won't be any wars, that's for sure, so maybe it's a good thing?

Making a factual complaint is something we should be teaching our children to do - it isn't about flipping over tables and screeching at people.

Beeinalily · 09/06/2022 07:54

Vegans, vegetarians, Jews, Muslims, people with allergies - this is so wrong. Please encourage her to complain, either in the kitchen or at the suppliers something has gone awry. Perhaps a disgruntled employee getting revenge?

No I did read that and am also quiet and conflict adverse but you have to force yourself to not be a doormat in some situations.

Bernadettebleu · 09/06/2022 07:59

She knows she should have said something. She’s a teenager though and not massively confident unlike me who would have definitely complained!

It was a joke - hence saying I was being facetious.
I completely understand the OPs point, and agreed that this was poor service. All I was saying is that the way Weatherspoons describe the creation of a plant-based meal makes it sound quite Frankensteinian, whereas ... oh, never mind, just miss the point and call me ridiculous
