To think the kitchen were deliberately trolling her?

DD is vegan. She went for dinner with a friend at Wetherspoons last night. She ordered a vegan burger. When she took a second bite she bit into a piece of streaky bacon in the middle of the burger. It’s hard to see how that could have happened accidentally. She sent it back politely and a new one was brought out. The server said ‘I hope it’s vegan this time!’. She opened it up and there was a piece of bacon in the middle again.

DD is very quiet and conflict averse some said nothing and ended up just paying the bill and leaving. She wishes she had made more of a fuss though.

I can’t see how this could have been accidental, twice. It definitely feels as though someone in the kitchen was trolling her. AIBU to think this?

That’s awful but not surprising.

was the bacon layered up in the burger or actually prepared in the middle of the patty?

If the former then someone in the kitchen is taking the piss, if the latter then the issue lies with the supplier, although Wetherspoons are responsible for resolving the problem and refunding.

I refuse to spend money in Wetherspoons especially on food, after ordering a breaded chicken dish that was sent out with raw chicken inside. When we complained they refused to refund only replace like for like and that too came out raw. Again they wouldn’t refund and offered a replacement pudding instead.

They treat their staff like crap and they treat their customers like crap, so this doesn’t surprise me at all

That's completely outrageous! I think Twitter is the way to go - certainly they need to be made aware and a public forum is a good place to ensure that the customer services team are informed
I would make sure the story was accurate before I went public tbh.
It's not adding up.
Apart from paying at the end, the staff come round to check your food is alright. This has happened in every sppons from Scarborough Dumfries, zHull Preston, Cluster etc. Im a spoons regular by default!!!

I agree. I have always been asked if the food's ok in every Wetherspoons I've been in. (Some beautiful buildings, btw.)

OP, before you fire off all the online reviews, you need to get your story straight. You already got it wrong about when your daughter paid. If you say online what you said in your OP here, people are just going to pick holes in your story and think it's a bit odd.

So, for example, they might query why, when the server apparently said, 'let's hope it's vegan this time!' neither your daughter nor the server thought to undertake the fairly simply task of looking under the bun lid while the server was standing right there.

A friend of mine works in a kitchen and just puts normal ice cream on the vegan desserts, gravy with meat fat in it on the meals, and normal cheese on pasta dishes.

you need better friends. I order vegan ice cream because of a (revoltingly sudden onset explosive reaction) lactose intolerance. If that happened to me I'd know within minutes. And i would sue the fuckers.

I worked in a chain pub with a rigid menu (not Wetherspoon's, but similar) when I was younger and I guarantee you it was a mistake rather than a deliberate thing. The communication between the bar and kitchen staff in places like that is often terrible. It's possible that they had a load of vegan burgers prepped in advance and whoever was doing them just put bacon in them while on auto-pilot after prepping eight million ordinary burgers first.

It's absolutely shit - apart from things like allergies and dietary preferences like vegetarianism and veganism, pork is a particular issue for anyone who follows a Jewish or Islamic diet - and it definitely shouldn't have happened, but it will be incompetence rather than deliberate trolling.

Being a little faceatious here, but if you look at how their vegan buger is made, i would be glad of the bacon as it seems far more naturally produced than the plant-based mash that is the burger!

But yes, OP, poor service

Why would you be expecting "naturally produced" food from a Wetherspoons?
And what is wrong with peas, beetroot & potato, as a base for processed food?

Bigboysmademedoit · 09/06/2022 10:32

Are you sure it wasn’t vegan ‘bacon’? I buy this and some of it is very realistic looking (and tasting). Just a thought.

Even if it was it still shouldn't have been on there.

Bacon on a burger is an optional extra apart from the Gourmet Burgers, none of which are vegitarian/vegan.

Vegan bacon does not feature on the Wetherspoons menu.

Is your DD young and attractive and was the server male? That would explain a lot: attention seeking, entitlement, wanting to engage in "banter".

notacooldad · 09/06/2022 11:10

Again notacooldad, I have better things to do than make up stories about Wetherspoons! I can assure you it’s true and we have photos and receipts
Fair enough but why on earth dudnt she say ' it's bacon again' when she was asked if everything is ok. You need to teach her the difference between kicking up a fuss and saying that you've got the wrong meal.

You think that a burger made out of plants is "Frankensteinian"? Whereas eating the flesh of a dead pig is the normal thing?

Ownedbymycats · 09/06/2022 11:37

Beyond meat burgers are delicious, the Dahl in Wetherspoon's used to be excellent and I suppose it survives freezing and microwaving really well.
I wonder would it be helpful if you worked with her on trying to improve her confidence skills re complaining. If she's vegan that's quite an essential skill.

The server wouldn't have cooked bacon and added it to a vegan burger for bants though, that's the kitchen staff

WalkWithDignityAndPride · 09/06/2022 12:13

She was being unreasonable for going near that place.

MichelleScarn · 09/06/2022 20:34

Did she take a photo of either of the burgers for evidence?
