To think I will get Council tax rebate?

UndertheCedartree · 07/06/2022 18:18

I've been looking at the support proposed to help with the cost of living crisis. It can't come soon enough as I'm completely broke and back to using the food bank.

One thing I'm a bit confused by. I'm exempt from paying Council tax. From what I have read it seems I would still be entitled to the £150 rebate. Do you have to apply for it? If I do get it would they transfer the money to me so I can use it to pay my utility bill?

Any help much appreciated.

No you don't apply. It's for all in Bands A to C. You will have it paid in to the account your direct debit comes out of OR you will be contacted for the details of bank for payment if you pay another way. Hth.

Applespearsandoranges · 07/06/2022 18:21

Based on 2) then no

www.gov.uk/guidance/council-tax-rebate-factsheet#will-i-be-eligible-for-the-council-tax-rebate

but call your council and ask

LIZS · 07/06/2022 18:25

You may be but councils differ. If you pay by dd it is automatically refunded to your bank, if not they will write to you.

Ours came out last month-check your bank. Are you sure you’ll get money back if you don’t pay council tax though?

I read that and thought it meant I would get it. I get exemption U.

If I have read it correctly then yes. This is what it says:

Where the occupants of a property in bands A - D are exempt from council tax on 1 April 2022, they will also be eligible if the property falls in one of the following classes of exemption: Class N (students – other than HMOs for council tax purposes), Class S (under 18s), Class U (people with a severe mental impairment), Class W (annexes occupied by a dependent relative)

Are you exempt from council tax for one of the reasons below?

"Where the occupants of a property in bands A - D are exempt from council tax on 1 April 2022, they will also be eligible if the property falls in one of the following classes of exemption: Class N (students – other than HMOs for council tax purposes), Class S (under 18s), Class U (people with a severe mental impairment), Class W (annexes occupied by a dependent relative)"

If so, you will be eligible. If not, I don't think you are?

UsedToBeAtAmber · 07/06/2022 18:35

Hi, Council Tax advisor here. As long as you are in band A to D you will qualify even if you are exempt. They won't be able to pay it into your bank account as there won't be a current direct debit in place so they will probably write to you to invite you to apply. The council I work for sent these letters last week but your council website should tell you when they will be doing this.

Tiani4 · 07/06/2022 18:35

@UndertheCedartree

By I read that and thought it meant I would get it. I get exemption U did you mean you don't pay council tax? (Ie You get full CT benefit), because I don't think you get given any money if you don't pay CT or are living in a property that is Band E or above.

It is rebate for those with council tax bands A-D properties who pay council tax. To help with rising CT costs.

Tiani4 · 07/06/2022 18:36

Ah others have crossed posted what exemption U means abs that you will still get it

IstayedForTheFeminism · 07/06/2022 18:36

I don't pay by DD and had to apply for mine. There was an email to explain it, but it was a general "your council roundup" type thing. Rather than the council writing to me iyswim.
It might be worth checking your local council website to see how they are doing it.

SpinstileTurnstile · 07/06/2022 18:36

Looks like you’ll be eligible.

All the best, @UndertheCedartree, it sounds like things are tough for you.

Applespearsandoranges · 07/06/2022 18:40

Sorry op half my message disappeared as I’d put unless you meet the other criteria

but if you haven’t received it yet I would chase the council

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 07/06/2022 18:40

My mum is also 'U' and was very confused by the online application process her letter told her to do.
It asked if she was liable for the council tax and she put no, so it said she wasn't eligible. Maybe she should have put she was liable as she is the only person living there, so would be liable if it was due. She gave up and didn't claim in the end.

flourella · 07/06/2022 18:41

You would get it, then, if you are exempt for that reason.

I am not exempt, but I don't pay anything because I get full council tax reduction. My council's website says they are setting up an online form for people who don't pay by direct debit (which obviously includes me, as I don't pay by any means). There's nothing to suggest they'll notify us when the form is up, so I'm having to check the website every day. I've read that other councils are writing to people who don't have a DD set up and whose property is in band A - D. You'll have to look online or call to find out how yours is doing it.

BetsysBeended410yrs · 07/06/2022 18:41

Yes go for it!
I got mine a week later

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 07/06/2022 18:47

‘It is rebate for those with council tax bands A-D properties who pay council tax. To help with rising CT costs.’

No it’s not! It’s an energy costs rebate administered via the CT system!
