To think I will get Council tax rebate?

I've been looking at the support proposed to help with the cost of living crisis. It can't come soon enough as I'm completely broke and back to using the food bank.

One thing I'm a bit confused by. I'm exempt from paying Council tax. From what I have read it seems I would still be entitled to the £150 rebate. Do you have to apply for it? If I do get it would they transfer the money to me so I can use it to pay my utility bill?

Any help much appreciated.

My mum is also 'U' and was very confused by the online application process her letter told her to do.
It asked if she was liable for the council tax and she put no, so it said she wasn't eligible. Maybe she should have put she was liable as she is the only person living there, so would be liable if it was due. She gave up and didn't claim in the end.

Oh dear. It can be very confusing! Maybe she could apply again?

You would get it, then, if you are exempt for that reason.

I am not exempt, but I don't pay anything because I get full council tax reduction. My council's website says they are setting up an online form for people who don't pay by direct debit (which obviously includes me, as I don't pay by any means). There's nothing to suggest they'll notify us when the form is up, so I'm having to check the website every day. I've read that other councils are writing to people who don't have a DD set up and whose property is in band A - D. You'll have to look online or call to find out how yours is doing it.

Ok, thank you

I am unsure if you can get money back that yiu have not paid.? Why wd you get a rebate on something you dont actually pay ?

I think it is to help with energy costs which obviously I have to pay for.

It is only being administered via the council tax system, it's not actually a CT rebate, it's simply help with the cost of living increases.

@UndertheCedartree

I hope by now you're confident you'll get it?! X

if you get pip (or one if several others benefits) you'll get the £650 as well (part in summer part in Autumn)

& the £400 that most people will get (it was the £200 loan, now changed to £400 'grant).

I hope you have someone helping to ensure you're getting all the help you can xx

MountainClimber22 · 07/06/2022 19:16

Yes you still get it. Even people who have never paid council tax get it. You need to apply online.

serenghetti2011 · 07/06/2022 19:19

I don’t pay council tax due to being in temporary accommodation and my house is band E but because I’m in temp accommodation I got it. So I think it depends on your circumstances

MountainClimber22 · 07/06/2022 19:20

Our council are asking people to upload things like proof of identity and proof of address to the online application.

Oh, yes it looks like it! I thought it had to be paid back? If not - even better! Yes, I get PIP so £650 - wow! That will help immensely!!

It does all seem rather complicated (to me!) I will ask my support worker to help me go through it all and making sure I am doing the right things.

I appreciate everyone's help, thank you.

Don't forgot to apply for the warm home discount when the scheme reopens. £140 for your gas/electric a year.

Oh, god I really hope it isn't too complicated! Like someone upthread said sometimes it just gets too complicated so you end up not being able to apply. I had that with some help with my water bill. They kept asking for more things and I just got confused and gave up. @JuneJubilee - has given me a good reminder to ask for help!

@UndertheCedartree Absolutely agree. Lots of people are finding it really difficult my work have been inundated with people needing help with the application.

JuneJubilee · 07/06/2022 21:26

@UndertheCedartree

Yes, they dumped the 'loan' idea, doubled the amount to £400 and made it a grant.

I now have terrible brain fog & find it much more difficult now to read, absorb & act on information. I'd like my brain back please.

In the past I've helped friends fill in these various applications & was happy to help, but couldn't really understand why they needed help, they're just firms right?! Now my eyes are blurry, my brain is foggy & I struggle to help them. I've said I'll do my best to help them apply for this round of grants etc because they just don't understand at all. I've often wondered how people who have MH issues/illnesses/high stress cope with the mountain of paperwork, systems, forms that need filling in etc let alone those for whom English isn't their first language.

please make sure you get any help you need to get all of the grants available to you !!

You will need to apply to your council. Ours was an online form, Leeds. The money is t help with any bills, if you pay council tax you can choose to have your bill reduced as you don't you will get the money so long as you are in band a-d.
The confusion arises because they are using council tax to refund because they have the information necessary already.
Good luck.

XenoBitch · 07/06/2022 21:57

It seems to vary between councils. I only just got mine, as I don't pay by DD, so had to wait for them to get in touch with me.

Your best bet is to contact your local council directly and ask.
