Why do you love The Royal Family?

I previously posted this on The Royal Family board but only received one response so wanted to post here for traffic.

For those that love The Queen & The Royal Family, can you actually explain why?

I often see MNetters saying ‘Oh I love The Queen, I love this member and that member’ but no one ever says why. I came across the video of Stacey Solomon saying she doesn’t get why the country is so obsessed with this family as it could be any one of us born into royalty and I totally agree.

For me, when I think of The Royal Family, I instantly think of colonialism and how many of the jewels on the Queen’s crown has been stolen from different countries. I understand not everyone thinks like this but why do some love the members of this establishment as if they’ve done anything to better your life? I’d love to hear people’s views. I’ve tried to have this conversation in real life but everyone I know couldn’t care less about The Royal Family so I’m none the wiser.

Here’s the Stacey Solomon clip for any who haven’t seen it before

Tell me about women’s movements against the monarchy. That’s news to me.

Well, it DOES define you, I think (I say as an outsider) but no specific member of the royal family is of importance here. It’s the institution itself and how it’s linked to history. Your periods are called Edwardian, Georgian, Elizabethan and so on which we in the rest of Europe learn about. It has to do with literature, politics, architecture and culture. And there is a strange but absolutely marvellous contrast between the royal firm/family and culture, think about punk culture or women’s movements against such an archaic institution. I just love it:)

How patronising. Wonderful to know the British provide such entertainment. Do you have just as much fun when other countries culturally stereotype and mock your population based on things they read in schoolbooks?

Nothing "marvellous" for some British people about having to kowtow to a bunch of crooks we get no choice about.

Because Ricky Tomlinson and the rest of the cast were all good actors?

Yet here we have this family, who won't have any idea of the struggle so many are facing, who are being supported by our taxes

You do know Johnson’s mate, Dido Harding, was handed more taxpayers’ money than the Sovereign Grant in 2020?

It's not a race to the "bottom" though is it? It makes sense to say well the government spunked all our money away on fake PPE so why not spend slightly less but still an absolute fortune to maintain a completely outdated institution as well.

Because they symbolise British ness, I and almost all my working class mates love the royal family. They represent the idea of duty, selflessness.
and we are ingrained to follow...the queens ancestors were more brutal, more blood thirsty bastards than mine (and my forefathers were nasty....trust me) so if rather fight for her than kier middle class wimp starmer

A public health emergency unprecedented in our lifetime. People under involuntary house-arrest for the best part of two years. The service, hospitality and travel economies are shot to shit. Energy prices are through the ceiling. The airports are chaos and our main ferry provider just sacked its entire staffing body. Morale and mental health have suffered and there is huge collateral damage to our already-crumbling services and enormous backlogs for urgent diagnosis and treatment.

No wonder there are queues in the airports. People understandably want to get away given the above state of things: of course they'll have wanted to look forward to something. But in the aftermath of all this, some flag-bedecked numbskulls just spent four days celebrating obscene, unprincipled, unearned, unelected, hereditary privilege?

Illogical isn't even the word. I'd get rid of the lot of them tomorrow if we could. Starting with the Lords, and not forgetting the 'Honours' list.

What in earth has Keir Starter got to do with this thread, just a chance to insult him I spose.
I see that more and more on MN - just throw in any old person you dislike into any old thread and make an invalid point.

Roussette · 10/06/2022 06:27

Starter (can't type!)

Roussette · 10/06/2022 06:28

Oh heck auto correct STARMER

AllHailKingLouis · 10/06/2022 06:28

I think it’s a bit ridiculous.

“I love Prince Charles!”
“I adore the Queen”
“oh I loved Prince Philip!”
“Princess Anne is amazing!”

these people wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire! They live a life of enormous privilege just because they happen to have been born into a certain family.

Don’t even get me started on the fawning over Diana.

As my username suggests however, I am amused by little Louis and his recent antics at the jubilee - I’m looking forward to seeing that one grow up 😂 let’s hope he never loses that character

Roussette · 10/06/2022 07:05

I hope he can get out in all honesty. And lead a normal life. And by that time, it won't be an unusual thing to do with Charles and his slimmed down monarchy that he's been talking about for a very long time.

This just proves how divisive the whole RF thing is. The rest of the country has to be defined by the Windsors because there's a hardcore of droids permanently stuck in medieval combat mode.

They don't want you to fight for them, they want you to fund their lifestyles.

Blossomtoes · 10/06/2022 09:39

It’s divisive because republicans seem unable to discuss it without streams of invective and vitriol.
