To wonder what the obsession with M&S Food is?

Decided to pick up a few bits and bobs from M&S as I needed some underwear and the food was very average. The fruits like grapes don’t taste any better than Tesco (albeit it was 25p more expensive at M&S) and was surprised to see that it’s more expensive than Waitrose! It seems like a nice place for takeaways/ready meals though

Can anyone clarify to me why they shop at M&S food over Tesco/Waitrose/Sainsbury’s?

I think their raspberries/blueberries are usually better than Sainsbo's/Waitrose, and I like some of their biscuits, but not much else excites me there tbh.

mum2jakie · 04/06/2022 17:39

M&S have a really good range of gluten free food which is why we ship there. It is expensive though!

Username917778 · 04/06/2022 17:40

I like the percy pig and Colin caterpillar range. They also make nice veggie marshmallows.

thisisit77 · 04/06/2022 17:40

Because it's close.

Are you seriously that bored that you want to know peoples reasons for shopping at M&S

Crankley · 04/06/2022 17:41

I'm addicted to their ham shanks.

Applegreenb · 04/06/2022 17:42

Because im snobby….. most people won’t admit that.

DashboardConfessional · 04/06/2022 17:43

Litererally what you said - ready meals, plus the bakery. I don't pay their prices for ingredients, fruit, bread, milk.

Treecloudtree · 04/06/2022 17:43

Sainsburys have the best fruit imo, but M&S are killing it with their ready meals and dine for £X food. Meat is nice quality, and of course Percy Pigs

katkit · 04/06/2022 17:44

Aghh. Bloody love M and S food. sitting at a town picnic, two glasses of Prosecco in, with nothing NOTHING! Could murder all
of their deli range.

dudsville · 04/06/2022 17:44

I've never gone in except for decades ago for quick lunchv items. I presume people go in for the dinner for two deals, but i don't know anyone who's done it.

Skinnermarink · 04/06/2022 17:44

A lot of it isn’t as good as it was though. They took a load of salt out 🤣

Womencanlift · 04/06/2022 17:44

Because it’s nicer own brand food than the ones you listed

I wouldn’t shop in Waitrose as never find anything in there that I couldn’t find elsewhere cheaper

What is unique about M&S is it’s about 90% own brand stuff that you can’t get elsewhere

I wouldn't do a full shop there but nice for treats (been in a few over the last few days to try and find the Jubilee Colin and Connie’s and cannot find them anywhere!)

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 04/06/2022 17:45

Ready meals and puddings are very good. I don’t shop there for anything other than treats but a family member does.

piefacedClique · 04/06/2022 17:46

They have nice bits…. Their peppercorn sauce is delicious and improves plain old chicken and baked potato. Their gastric range is lovely…. Best chicken kievs around. And their picnicky bit are nice too…. Chicken wings etc. when we can’t be bothered we love a beige buffet for dinner…. Chicken strips etc are lush

I was going to mention the gluten free options, they're brilliant

Changechangychange · 04/06/2022 17:47

There’s one in work (hospital) and it has better lunch food than Costa.

I don’t know anyone who does a full weekly shop in M&S. They might exist, but I think most people nip in for odd bits.

tootiredtobother · 04/06/2022 17:47

tea bags - the gold box , and wouldn't do a full shop there ever

ScreamingMeMe · 04/06/2022 17:47

I don't even think their ready meals are all that special tbh. I did used to like some of their sandwiches and salads for lunch though.

femfemlicious · 04/06/2022 17:47

The only thing i buy there is their jam donuts. They are so delicious

blindsinthecity · 04/06/2022 17:48

I think pre pandemic their food was of better quality. It’s still decent now though.

Lipsandlashes · 04/06/2022 17:48

I really like their ‘dine in’ offers. DH says the blueberries are better thank anywhere else. Their deli foods are amazing. It’s convenient for us.

Lipsandlashes · 04/06/2022 17:48

Than not thank

Iamthewombat · 04/06/2022 17:49

Because their stuff is nicer than anywhere else. Their fruit wipes the floor with any other supermarket, although Sainsburys are second. They also innovate and launch really nice, unusual salads and ready meals.

LaWench · 04/06/2022 17:50

Good marketing and higher prices make you think it's better.

It's just label snobbery, all supermarkets buy from the same suppliers.

jubileetrain · 04/06/2022 17:50

Do you consider people who shop in other supermarkets to be 'obsessed' or just the ones who shop in M&S? It's not an obsession, is it? It's a choice.

I shop in Tesco, M&S or Sainsburys depending on how I feel/what I fancy/where I am when I decide to go shopping. I'm obsessed with none of those shops, I just use them to buy stuff.
