To wonder what the obsession with M&S Food is?

Decided to pick up a few bits and bobs from M&S as I needed some underwear and the food was very average. The fruits like grapes don’t taste any better than Tesco (albeit it was 25p more expensive at M&S) and was surprised to see that it’s more expensive than Waitrose! It seems like a nice place for takeaways/ready meals though

Can anyone clarify to me why they shop at M&S food over Tesco/Waitrose/Sainsbury’s?

The fruit’s always better. The chocolate tastes like chocolate should. The ice cream’s to die for. The triple cooked chips are the food of the gods. And they have lots of delicious things you can’t buy anywhere else.

SavBbunny · 04/06/2022 19:31

I shop at Marks every week.

The following are my recommendations :

Posh dogs (puppies too when they have them)
All the fruit and salad.
Smoked salmon portions (not slices) in bags of 5/6?
Chicken, mushrooms, rice & veg soup (love it), two portions out of one pot.
Pizza
Not the curries (Waitrose are better)
Delecourt Champagne brut and demi sec over branded unless big budget.
Cheese scones
Easy cook white rice
Raspberry sorbet
Grapefruit hand-wash

We shop everywhere. DH does Tesco, Sainsbury and Lidl. I like a proper butchers.

Barkingmadhouse · 04/06/2022 19:35

Because it is better than tesco and Sainsburys

SafelySoftly · 04/06/2022 19:40

Ocado have switched to them so we now get M and S not Waitrose food delivered. No big deal, we’re not talking Selfridges football.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 04/06/2022 19:47

They have some lovley ready made things, like pasta salad, sandwich fillers, desserts, ready meals and the bakery stuff too is really good.

I buy them as a treat, but not often!!

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 04/06/2022 19:47

I do my weekly shop there! I love the food - good quality and delicious. The biscuits/fruit/ready meals/veg/chocolate/bakery… it’s all great I think. It’s also a nicer experience. Tescos and sainsburys are just depressing. Cold, vast and depressing.

PuppyMonkey · 04/06/2022 19:49

They do a bloody amazing beef brisket cooked in red wine. And those triple cooked chips are yum.

Summerwetordry · 04/06/2022 19:51

I'm very allergic to Chinese food, but the M&S meals I can eat without any reaction and they are delicious.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 04/06/2022 20:00

Fruit is still very good, as is meat and deli items. Their tea and sauces are the best out there, so is the juice and treats.

Absolutely agree with this .

Sainsburys have the best fruit imo, but M&S are killing it with their ready meals and dine for £X food. Meat is nice quality, and of course Percy Pigs

And mint crumbles. You can feel your teeth melting from all the sugar but I love them

ThinWomansBrain · 04/06/2022 20:09

I prefer the tesco "dine in for £x" - and that was before M&S dropped the wine from the deal.
Years ago they used to have a brilliant lentil lasagne (or mousakka maybe) - now despite all the meat free stuff, they don't make it.
Not had it for a while, but their own brand chocolate is nice, and I like the deli 3 for £7 range.

ThinWomansBrain · 04/06/2022 20:10

& I like their cheese scones

Agree their Curry meals are really good, much better than any take away we have locally. Lots of really nice, different things & they are innovative with new recipes etc. I just don't agree that their ready meals are the 'same' as other Supermarket ready meals ... I can 'taste the difference' Grin. Their sandwiches are much nicer than any other 'ready made' sandwiches.

Absolutely, DH got food poisoning off our local curry place and since then we've just bought M&S - I have a whole shelf of their curries in my freezer! Just as easy to heat and eat as to go and get a takeout, tastier, cheaper and healthier too (though obviously we're not doing it cos they're healthier!).

EwwSprouts · 04/06/2022 20:16

Our small M&S has a wider variety of fish and seafood than our Tesco Extra. Agree it's also a much better experience, for us than the adjacent Morrisons.

Things we like
Tomatoes that actually taste of something
Thai red prawn curry
Blood orange & chocolate ice lollies
Baked beans are good and cheaper than Heinz
Mixed size eggs are a good price
Pulled pork sausage rolls
Good range of cheeses
Stocks Anchor butter

Blaze1886 · 04/06/2022 20:20

M&S, Waitrose... both average at best

MaChienEstUnDick · 04/06/2022 20:21

To be fair, in lockdown when we weren't going out the idea of M&S as a 'treat' quickly wore thin. I don't think the dine in deal is nearly as good now they've dropped the wine and it is £££.

We tend to buy:

Curries, replacing a takeaway as I mentioned above
Pasta ready meals - fussy DS loves a couple of their options and it's great for him to just heat up himself on club nights.
Deli bits - so much nicer than anywhere else
Raw fish - I don't have access to a fishmonger so tend to stock up on salmon fillets etc.

And their pickled red onions are a lunch staple, we put them on everything!

Pedallleur · 04/06/2022 20:22

prob made in the same factories as the other supermarket brands. Fruit and veg is ok but can be riper and a LOT cheaper from our local market. Charlie Bighams ready meals are better imo. Had the chicken Jalfrezi recently - excellent. Best thing in M&S? Those yellow tickets that start going on the items near closing time and the prices start dropping to sensible levels

Moonshine5 · 04/06/2022 20:23

Die hard fan here.
Reasonably priced for what you get.
Pretty much like all the ranges
Consistent quality.
Fwiw I do shop everywhere: Sainsbury's, Lidl, Morrisons, Tesco's, Waitrose, BM, local green grocers local butchers, ethnic shops etc

easyday · 04/06/2022 20:26

I go for ready meals and there are a few things they sell that other shops don't. I wouldn't go for fruit and veg and basics like that. It's the same with Waitrose - they sell some things others don't. My local Co-op sell Aioli that others don't - I make a special trip occasionally for that alone.

BeyondMyWits · 04/06/2022 20:29

Ocado deliver m and s stuff, so we get a load of ocado basics, fruit and veg, basic cards... and m and s treat stuff ... frozen, ready to bake choc chunk cookies (THE BEST THING EVER!@#), that sort of thing.

PlanetNormal · 04/06/2022 20:31

M&S’s fresh fruit, particularly berries, are by far the best of all the supermarkets - as they should be for that price. Their Indian ready meals are excellent, the dine-in meal deals are great quality & brilliant value, their sandwiches are different level to their rivals as are their desserts.

Badger1970 · 04/06/2022 20:35

I was initially very enthusiastic about M & S when Ocado went over to them, but the novelty soon wore off. Not enough family sized packs of food, and very poor dates. We found one near our holiday let in March, and I bought a weeks' worth of food - most of it went out of date within 48 hours of buying Hmm

Hence we now stick to Waitrose - same quality but far better in terms of dating. If Waitrose deliver anything going out of date within 48 hours of delivery you're given it free............

ouch12345 · 04/06/2022 20:36

I don't think it's snobbery, i genuinely think M&S have the best food over all the other supermarkets. We don't shop in there all the time but if I wanted a treat I'd go to M&S. I am never disappointed. I wouldn't buy fruit / veg from there as not much difference to anywhere else but the ready meals / sandwiches / sides are gorgeous.

StridTheKiller · 04/06/2022 20:37

Their fruit is way better than Tesco etc and I love me a bit of Tesco. M&S cottage pie and their freshly squeezed green smoothie and baguette lunchtime deal (£5) is the bollocks, as is their pasta salad and cooked kebab deal for £5. And you can't beat a colin or Connie.
