Sean Connery?

PrawnToast5 · 02/06/2022 14:01

Need a tissue?

Investicat · 02/06/2022 14:01

I say ‘ashume’. I come from London and have an RP accent. If I say ‘assoom’ it sounds like I am ‘ashuming’ an American accent.

girlmom21 · 02/06/2022 14:09

I think I might flit between the two

Nanny0gg · 02/06/2022 14:11

AssUme here.

pointythings · 02/06/2022 14:12

I don't ashume, but this does remind me of the joke where Sean Connery tells someone all his books fell on his head once: 'I blame my shelf'.

glamourousindierockandroll · 02/06/2022 14:13

I'm from the north and I say assyoom

growandhope · 02/06/2022 14:14

@CinnabarRed actually now I appreciate ashumed. He can pull it off or could.

Do you ash-eume?
I’m RP and no ash here.

Not: Ass-oom or Ash-oom (like room)
Or: Ash-eume (like euphonium)

But: ass-eume

DuchessOfSausage · 02/06/2022 14:15

Northern. Ass-ewm

ForestFae · 02/06/2022 14:18

Assyoom- northern

Testina · 02/06/2022 14:19

Of course this is where phonetics help when you’re familiar with them!

My ass-eume is this:

/əˈsjuːm/

And looking that up was a good reminder that I ass- anything, but more -uhss it (the schwa assume /ə/ sound.

Definitely no /aʃ/ occurring though!

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 02/06/2022 14:19

PR accent and ASSyoom. Ive never heard anyone say ashume!

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 02/06/2022 14:21

Just read the message above and actually I say uhsyoom

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 02/06/2022 14:21

Assoom - North West

AryaStarkWolf · 02/06/2022 14:23

CinnabarRed · 02/06/2022 13:55

Sean Connery?

was just about to say 😁

Ashoome from Scotland. Assume is American

Fairislefandango · 02/06/2022 14:30

(I say ‘ashume’. I come from London and have an RP accent. If I say ‘assoom’ it sounds like I am ‘ashuming’ an American accent.*

I'm RP (Home Counties) and don't say 'ashume'. I also don't say 'assoom' (and agree it sounds American). I say 'assyoom', with a 'y' sound before the 'ume' - as also in 'fume', 'exhume' 'numerous', 'puma' etc).

Fairislefandango · 02/06/2022 14:33

I disagree. 'Ashoome' and 'assyoom' are both common throughout the UK. In fact the 'sh' is almost certainly the result of a gradual erosion of the sound of the s+y bring smooshed together. 'Assoom' is American.

LoveLarry · 02/06/2022 14:42

How do you give someone an assurance of something

Same pronounciation I think

Although saying it aloud I think I say
Ass yoom.

Interesting question!
I said assurance out loud, and I do have an “ash” sound that I don’t for assume.

But check the dictionary and phonetically A yep, that’s standard pronunciation:

assurance
/əˈʃʊər(ə)ns/

assume
/əˈsjuːm/

Not all “assu” combinations are the same.

assumption
/əˈsʌm(p)ʃ(ə)n/

There you go - 3 different vowel sounds from the u now!

zurala · 02/06/2022 14:49

Uhsyume is how I say it

Stroopwaffels · 02/06/2022 14:50

Assumed.

Ashumed is a Sean Connery-ism, and despite us both being from Edinburgh, he's wrong.

Fairislefandango · 02/06/2022 14:51

I guess 'assurance' is different because 'sure' is different. It would sound very odd to pronounce 'sure' as 'syoor', therefore it would also sound weird to pronounce 'assurance' 'assyoorance'.

LowlandLucky · 02/06/2022 14:56

Where the heck does the H come from. A sume and A sure
