where does ashumed come from and what accent thinks this is ok?😉

It irritates me... not sure why. I think it sounds pretentious. So does "issue" with the Ss pronounced as ss and not sh.

There's a few more like this. I find it's usually quite "posh" people who say things this way?

Ashumed
Ashured
Ishue

I'd also say sure and shore the same.

Home counties.

Ashoome from Scotland. Assume is American

I'm Scottish and have always said assume. Maybe different in different parts of the country.

girlmom21 · 02/06/2022 14:09

I think I might flit between the two

Me too.

I'm Scottish

Me too. We don't all shound like Mr Connery ☺

Mount2Climb · 02/06/2022 15:16

I only ever heard people from poor socio-economics say a-shume.
It's ass-yoom.
Assure is different, it's like saying sure.

Issue and tissue pronounces ess you and tiss you is the right pronounciation but SH is the more common one. If you say S people assume you're trying to be posh.

PurpleButterflyWings · 02/06/2022 15:18

YANBU. It's a bit like the word 'species' being pronounced 'SPEE-SHEES' - instead of SPEE-SEES!

PurpleButterflyWings · 02/06/2022 15:20

@Mount2Climb

Hmm
Mount2Climb · 02/06/2022 15:24

@PurpleButterflyWings
I did not say all people from poor socio economics pronounce it ashume. I said the ones I heard say assume ashume had poor socio economics.
That is my experience. I'm sure I heard many from a poor socio economic background say assume as assume, too. I've not heard a middle class person say ashume. Maybe you have and that's fine.

2bazookas · 02/06/2022 15:38

I agree, ashume id definately not asseptable. Probly people who speak like that are vunnerable in some way.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 02/06/2022 15:46

“Assume” makes an ass out of you and me.

Hugasauras · 02/06/2022 15:50

Hmm, I'm Scottish and say 'ashyoom' and DH is from Devon and also says it like that. Both painfully middle-class I'm afraid! Does remind me of my old teacher who said 'Tissyoo' instead of 'Tishoo' for tissue.Grin

Just a standard regional variation I'd imagine.

Orla83 · 02/06/2022 15:50

I've heard three different pronunciations:

Ass-soom
Ass-syoom
Ash-oom

I use the middle pronunciation, but it's not over emphasised.

Momicrone · 02/06/2022 16:53

Never heard of ashume

echt · 02/06/2022 17:17

Come to Australia, home of ashume, reshume, etc., at least on TV. It appears relatively recent, i.e.wasn’t a thing when I got here about 15 years ago.

MelonsMelonsMelons · 02/06/2022 17:23

I always thought it was pronounced Arse-Homed.

Same! I'm not originally from the UK but I am bilingual and have lived in the South West for 15 years now. I ashumed everyone said it like I do, but then years ago I started noticing that most BBC presenters say assyoom and thought "wtf is this?!". DH has started saying it in the last couple of years and I still can't get used to it. 😂

Daophos · 03/07/2023 20:36

If you're from London, you most likely are not an RP speaker.
The Cambridge Dictionary, which uses RP English, lists the pronunciation of "assume" as /əˈsjuːm/. The only difference between standard RP and standard North American English is the /j/ (or the "y" sound) and not "s" versus "sh." The "sh" you pronounce is a new feature of southern English dialects, but it is not "standard."
