To ask if you have ever thrown up in your sleep after a drunken night out?

Happened to me a few days ago after a very drunken evening. I remember towards the end that I felt very queasy but ended up not throwing up (went to the bathroom to try and chunder but nothing came out). I ended up going to bed quite wasted, however I woke up with with the smell of vomit and there seemed to be dried puke on my duvet and pillow.

I also was super super hungover.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Yes. More than once. Not my finest hour(s).

Yes. More than once. Not my finest hour(s).

Bless you. I have thrown up drunk before (but it all used to be when I was actually awake). This was the first time it was when I was asleep.

I threw up in my sleep and I still woke up nauseous (thanks to the god awful hangover I had!!!)

no , thats so dangerous you could have choked. learn from it please

x2boys · 20/05/2022 08:53

In my youth ,its scary though you could choke 😪

SNWannabe · 20/05/2022 08:53

It’s incredibly dangerous and people can easily die as a result. Drinking so much that this happens is also pretty dangerous. You’re lucky you woke up.

SpingTimeMelody · 20/05/2022 08:54

Very dangerous. Close friend actually died from this. Please be careful.

GunsNShips · 20/05/2022 08:55

Twice. Once when I was 18 and once about 3 years ago when I stupidly drank on an empty stomach.

Afterfire · 20/05/2022 08:55

I know of someone who has died from this. This is why I always tell dd aged 19 never to go to bed straight away if she’s drunk.

TheVanguardSix · 20/05/2022 08:55

Nope. I have to say, not even close.
I will be the buzzkill on this thread and tell you that my friend died that way.

Nothappyatwork · 20/05/2022 08:57

This is exactly how Jimi Hendrix died it’s not big it’s not clever don’t do it again

lancsgirl85 · 20/05/2022 08:57

No.

rosesANDthornes · 20/05/2022 08:58

To those who have lost a friend I'm sorry :(

What should I have done? Eaten bread and drank lots of water to sober up?
I did try puking in the bathroom but it did not 'come out' and I thought the pain had died down.

LakieLady · 20/05/2022 08:59

No, thankfully, but in my binge drinking days, I spent many a night puking my guts up.

SmileyClare · 20/05/2022 08:59

This is how Jimi Hendrix died; vomit asphyxiation.

Throwing up in your sleep can be dangerous when very drunk as your natural reflexes (including gag reflex) are immobilised by alcohol. You can inhale vomit into your lungs.

One preventative measure is to make sure you lie on your side, the other is to drink less obviously!

I hope you've recovered. It sounds like a pretty dark day: waking up not only feeling rough as hell but covered in vomit, stinking and having to change your whole bed.

I did it once as a student, it was all in my hair <shudder>

SapphireEyes88 · 20/05/2022 09:01

Happened to me once, and if I hadn't been sleeping on my front I'd have choked and died as I'd eaten to soak up the alcohol.
This was actually the point where I realised my drinking was unhealthy and I needed help.

rosesANDthornes · 20/05/2022 09:06

To give context this is the first (and will be the ONLY) time I've sleep puked.

I have thrown up from alcohol before but it has only been a handful of times.

MissBattleaxe · 20/05/2022 09:09

No, it's one of my greatest fears. So many people have died from this. There's a reason why drunk people should stay up, drink tea and watch crap telly on the sofa before going to bed.

SmileyClare · 20/05/2022 09:09

What should I have done? Eaten bread and drunk water to sober up?

You can't sober yourself up like that. Come on, if you're bingeing enough to throw up regularly and have now done it while unconscious that's a wake up call to calm down,, not a signal to eat more bread before bed. Read up a bit.

You can hopefully get drunk, have a brilliant night without giving yourself alcohol poisoning. Try to judge when you've had enough so you're not putting yourself in dangerous situations.

Lecture over! Smile

My son died due to this, you are very lucky to have woken up at all. If you had been lying in a different position, you would have choked.
Please think about the way you drink alcohol. He died over 10 years ago, and although I have a good and happy life, I think about him every day and cry a bit.

I'm so so sorry for posting this and bringing up bad memories.

When I was a teenager, sure. I think most people will have.

You perhaps need to look at your alcohol intake as it takes some manner of binge for it to happen. (now there'll be hundreds of posters claiming to vomit after a sniff of Babycham, but really....nah)

@queenMab99 how utterly awful. So sorry Flowers

MissBattleaxe · 20/05/2022 09:12

Oh @queenMab99 I'm so, so sorry. I hope you sharing this stops someone else from doing it.

purpleme12 · 20/05/2022 09:12

Yes a few times.
Most of the time I wake myself up doing it.
Once about a month ago but before then it was all years ago when I was younger.
It makes me sound like such a drunk but I'm honestly not/wasn't

Arsewangry · 20/05/2022 09:13

Once as a teenager on a friends bed, but as it turns out she was actually seeing my long term boyfriend behind my back so 🤷🏻‍♀️ probably not my finest hour though to be fair, and something that could have ended much worse.

Sooverthemill · 20/05/2022 09:13

No. Never. Why would anyone drink so much it makes them risk their life.
