To ask if you have ever thrown up in your sleep after a drunken night out?

Happened to me a few days ago after a very drunken evening. I remember towards the end that I felt very queasy but ended up not throwing up (went to the bathroom to try and chunder but nothing came out). I ended up going to bed quite wasted, however I woke up with with the smell of vomit and there seemed to be dried puke on my duvet and pillow.

I also was super super hungover.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

When I was young and daft (a long time ago) I got drunk and was sick by the bedside on the carpet and some of it got in my long hair which then took ages to comb out - yes, disgusting. Massive hangover next morning. However, I learned from the experience and didn't do it again.

In those days drunkeness was considered shameful, perhaps a temporary phase one went through and then grew out of, rather than the way of life it appears to be today - plus booze was much more expensive then.

Might it be a good idea to drink less instead of making such a tit of yourself so often? It really isn't necessary to get into that sort of state to have a good time. I'm sure you can be confident and entertaining without this crutch. If not, why not?

Wouldyabeguilty · 20/05/2022 12:30

Please don't get yourself into such a state that this happens. This is teenager stuff.

theonlygirl · 20/05/2022 12:34

I enjoy a drink OP and have spent many a night with Armitage Shanks but as others have said, you could have choked to death. Not judging, but maybe time to have a good think about not getting quite so hammered.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 20/05/2022 12:37

No.

I'm really surprised so many people have, to be honest.

nearlyspringyay · 20/05/2022 12:38

Nope, and I've had my fair share of sick before bed and hangover puking.

Chubarubrub · 20/05/2022 12:38

Not from drinking but from a migraine. I went to sleep and had an awful migraine induced nightmare and I woke up because I was mid-vomit.

Waking up and not realise you’ve been sick is scarier though.

I was scared about this as a teen so always put myself in the recovery position before sleeping, not sure it’d even help- but helped my anxiety!

BillCar · 20/05/2022 12:40

Yes, happened to me more than once years ago - the first time my drink had been spiked but that seemed to trigger it happening on subsequent occasions in the following year or so, like it flipped a switch that stopped me waking up when I was about to be sick. It's incredibly frightening and as a result, I don't drink much anymore.

Problemmo · 20/05/2022 12:40

Nope but I did have to stop having sex with someone once to go vomit. I was ridiculously drunk and I only just made it to the loo. The worst thing is we picked up where we left off when I was finished 🤢.

GlitterSparkley · 20/05/2022 12:47

My friends dad died of this also. And seeing the comments on here its it more common than I had thought. Be careful OP

CounsellorTroi · 20/05/2022 12:48

Never in my sleep, no.

CrabPuff · 20/05/2022 12:53

I have to say as someone who really drank a hell
of a lot in her 20s and 30s - and I’m not talking 30 units a week, more like 100 - I have never done this and I have never wet the bed either. I think either of those things would scare me into never getting drunk again. I can’t believe how many people this has happened to. I can’t even drink enough for a hangover any more.

Lolojojonesi · 20/05/2022 12:57

I think seeing the anecdotes on here might make the OP think it's common to get so drunk you vomit in your sleep. It's not common, and it's crucial that drinking this much is not normalised, as it's SO dangerous, as the tragic stories on this thread have shown.

lurchermummy · 20/05/2022 13:15

Yes when I was younger and embarrassingly once in the double bed I was sharing with a very nice friend who had offered to let me stay over after a Christmas party. I was sooooo embarrassed. And hungover. It was horrible - probably for her as much as me!

UnbeatenMum · 20/05/2022 13:28

I also know if someone who died from this leaving a young child behind. Do you know how many drinks you had? Because in the future you could choose a safe limit and stick to it. E.g. if you had 8 drinks then maybe stick to 6 or 4 in future and alternate soft drinks. If you can't stop once you've started then consider going teetotal.

No, but I have sat up all night with a teenager when I thought it was a risk.

I have drunk myself sick, but not unconscious.

I did similar with my DS a couple of times, has now safely reached the age of 25.

What a harrowing thread this is. Utterly terrifying.

Even among people who drink a lot regularly it's not that common. I used to drink a lot but don't at all now. Luckily I never vomited in my sleep.
But it's such a horrifying risk, whatever the odds. Maybe this thread could potentially save some lives.

Wolfiefan · 20/05/2022 14:06

No I haven’t. This isn’t normal. Why would you binge drink so much it makes you vomit in your sleep. And possibly kill you.

I agree, I've vomited after drinking wine or cider, but I've never not woken up and been aware that I'm about to be sick. But I've never passed out or lost my memory due to alcohol either. I only lost my memory once when my drink was spiked by some so called male friends.
