I bought a wedding dress on Saturday. I have decided that I despise it and would like to return it (or set it on fire). The shop (little boutique) only issues store credit. I don’t think it’s likely that I will use thousands of pounds of wedding boutique store credit.

What would you do? I’m screwed, aren’t I?

Do they sell bridesmaids stuff? Could you use the money to dress other members of the bridal party?

I do love it but agree with others that it doesn't do your lovely figure justice. It needs to be fitted to YOU.
Do you have any example pictures of dresses you do like that you could show us? It might help to discuss what you like about them to get a clearer idea.

I love this dress, but it’s too expensive: www.modaoperandi.com/women/p/marchesa/embroidered-floral-tulle-gown/517098?country=GB&currency=GBP&gclid=CjwKCAjwrfCRBhAXEiwAnkmKmZZMJM8VMn4sqkV5GJ-IGn843-dF20i60nt72peo8cPLjqjZgrFOcxoCdsgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I also like these.

I don’t have any advice but if you do decide to get another dress then the boutique I have earmarked might fit your edgy modern colourful theme (they can do custom dye jobs on all their stuff). Happy to send a link if you’re interested

Yes, please!

Definitely ask a seamstress. I bought a dress which was VILE on the rack. Well, parts of it were great and I could see that it would suit me with changes. I paid a seamstress and she changed the sleeves, changed the lace neckline, changed the satin plunging neckline beneath the satin, pulled it in at the waist and reduced the length. I think length and waist reduction are pretty common so it fits perfectly but the dress looked nothing like it did before. Even the seamstress herself was chuffed, she actually teared up when I tried it on and took a photo!

I'd think there could be options for changing layers, removing or adding, changing the waistline, possibly dyeing the dress and turning it into separates, adding embellishments etc. You'd be surprised at what could be possible. I'd go and see one, find some pictures of things you do like and see whether they can come up with anything.

eggandonion · 19/05/2022 19:14

If the moh loves it, can she wear it?
Are you near an art college, could you source a fashion student to make it edgy?
I quite like the pink!

Bollindger · 19/05/2022 19:14

Go see them, get the store credit and ask if they can help you order a dress you do like from their suppliers, most will be only too willing to help you do this, or they may be willing to help buy bridesmaid dresses,

ChocolateHippo · 19/05/2022 19:16

I agree. I'd take the dress and pictures to a seamstress. You might be able to get something quite close to what you want (or at least the second/third pictures that you've posted) by dyeing/embellishing, together with some simple alterations.

ChocolateHippo · 19/05/2022 19:17

Sorry, agree @Princetopple !

This dress maker makes slightly edgier two piece wedding dresses and does custom dye jobs, you might be able to keep the top and add a different bottom - www.etsy.com/ie/shop/WardrobeByDulcinea?page=1#items

Stigsmother · 19/05/2022 19:21

I think it's a beautiful dress, not a bit identikit, but what I think is irrelevant, you have have to be in love with it.
Agree with extending the waist down a bit, and making it more of a feature, you could do a short front/long back , but not too extreme. You could then focus attention on a fabulous, edgy pair of shoes 🙂

Really, don't wear something you don't feel like 'you' in; it's too important.....it's important at work, at parties, when shopping for parsnips and lipstick, never mind when marrying. If you don't feel like you, the marriage isn't between two real people!

Milliesmummy92 · 19/05/2022 19:22

If you do go dress shopping again either go on your own or with someone that can't sway your opinion, the amount of times I've bought something because someone I was shopping with loved it and then I regretted it. I went wedding shopping with my SIL who I love dearly but not really bothered about her opinion. When I found what was 'the dress' I took my mum along and luckily she loved it!

150poundrebate · 19/05/2022 17:15

I suspect I’m going to regret this, but this is the dress.

Oh OP I totally understand why you aren’t happy with that. Did you go in wanting a pink dress or did it just happen?

I think the top is nice, a decent seamstress could probably remove it and attach it to a different bottom half?

BanjoVio · 19/05/2022 19:25

SoManyTshirts · 19/05/2022 16:41

Please don’t flame me … if I bought a wedding dress and then decided I really really didn’t want to get married in it, I’d wonder what was going on in my own head.

Did not spot this at my own last wedding, for which I refused to buy a dress and wore a ball gown from the back of the wardrobe.

I have to say... this happened to me. I took all my anxieties out on the dress which, in hindsight, was absolutely gorgeous. Fast forward and I'm now divorced and happily engaged to someone else.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 19/05/2022 19:28

If you reverse image search the dress in google it will bring you up a selection of 'visually similar' dresses. Could you use that as inspiration and see if there's anything you can have adjusted by a seamstress?

Did you have to say, though? Really?

I don’t have ‘anxieties’. I bought a dress I don’t like. It happens.

Please go away.

I think it's great that you've realised now rather than nearer the day. I got married in a dress I hated.

My friend did this, then only liked the top half. We went shopping for the bottom half. The seamstress cut both in half and sewed then together. She looked amazing. Could have seen the other two together to make a bespoke dress (I don't know what she did with that!)
