To think £56 for a food shop for a week is expensive?

It's just me and my 8 year old daughter. I've been trying to save money and usually shop daily so decided tonight to do an online shop at Asda for Monday. The total came to just under £57 for the week, that's for 10 breakfasts, 5 lunches (for me as daughter at school) and 10 dinners and some snacks. This included two bottles of wine (£10) and two cat foods (£8) so I suppose these could be ignored.

However, I still think it's an excessive amount for the amount just the two of us. Is that a lot or pretty average?

£8 a day for food for 2 doesn't seem too bad to me. Depends what you are buying though I suppose.

bloodywhitecat · 13/05/2022 22:41

I'd say it's pretty average, I spend similar on me, a toddler and a 1 year old.

Hugasauras · 13/05/2022 22:41

Seems pretty low to me given £18 was other stuff!

converseandjeans · 13/05/2022 22:41

That sounds about right. I would spend around £100/125 per week for 4 of us. I usually do Aldi or Lidl and then Waitrose for some branded items we like. It's around £4/day pp which is good for main meals, breakfasts plus lunch.

XenoBitch · 13/05/2022 22:41

Depends what you are buying and where. £56 in Waitrose wont get you much.... £56 in Lidl will get you a lot.

Hellocatshome · 13/05/2022 22:41

Nope is say that was fine. Take out the wine and cat food and your talking £39 for a week.

Assistanttotheregionalmanager · 13/05/2022 22:42

Gosh we can spend that in a pop to the shop for ‘bits’ for 4 children and 2 adults. I think you’ve done well with that for a weekly shop but would say its all relative to your household budget anyway.

ChickensandCows · 13/05/2022 22:42

Thats not much at all if £10 is wine!

Notimeforaname · 13/05/2022 22:42

No that sounds fine.. Minus the wine and cat food its £38. How much cheaper would you like it to be ?

Ducksurprise · 13/05/2022 22:42

£39 for a week? No I don't think that is very much.

jugglerofballs · 13/05/2022 22:43

How does it compare to your weekly spend when you shopped daily? It works out at £8.14 per day including cat food and wine. That doesn’t seem expensive to me.

luxxlisbon · 13/05/2022 22:44

So under £40 for an adult and child with snacks?
I don’t think that’s overly expensive. Sure you could probably get cheaper but if you usually shop daily are you really spending less than £5 per day?

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/05/2022 22:45

That isn't much at all! We spend around £200 pw for a family of 4 with 2 teen DS's

Viviennemary · 13/05/2022 22:48

I think that's really cheap considering the wine as well.

GrazingSheep · 13/05/2022 22:51

What are you buying ?

Testina · 13/05/2022 22:52

You could spend less, but you could spend more 🤷🏻‍♀️
Clearly it’s an affordable amount for you if you’re happy to nearly 20% of your weekly total on wine.

Threetulips · 13/05/2022 22:53

Depends on how you use what you buy and if you can batch cook and save a few dinners for the next week, doing this can increase your spending power - buy more nice treats or you can save a few Pennie’s for a rainy day.

Kite22 · 13/05/2022 22:53

If you take the wine and cat food out, then it is under £40.
I mean, I guess you could spend less if you needed to, but it isn't excessive.

Why do you ask ?

Not looking forward to the teen years... My children are primary age and our bill is currently less than half that!

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 13/05/2022 22:55

I spent £58 today for the week. £20 of that was cat food. I thought that was pretty good, it's very easy to be closer to £80 if I add on alcohol and junk food.

Littepinkyogapants · 13/05/2022 22:56

I feel mortified . But it is just me DH and DS ( who is 6 months ) we spend £150 a week on food . No takeaways . Just food and some weeks we spend more . And no we don’t even drink .

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 13/05/2022 22:56

2 adults, two teens and a dog and we spend around £250 a week. £39 is pretty amazing for a week.

Poptart4 · 13/05/2022 22:56

YABU

Booboobibles · 13/05/2022 23:02

I spend at least £80 on the main shop and usually extra because I’ve eaten all the snacks😳. That’s for me, teen DS and two small dogs.

MrOllivander · 13/05/2022 23:02

I think that's fine. I live alone and spend between £40-60 depending on if I'm stocking up. Don't drink and I buy cleaning stuff in bulk usually from Wilko or b&m
