To think £56 for a food shop for a week is expensive?

It's just me and my 8 year old daughter. I've been trying to save money and usually shop daily so decided tonight to do an online shop at Asda for Monday. The total came to just under £57 for the week, that's for 10 breakfasts, 5 lunches (for me as daughter at school) and 10 dinners and some snacks. This included two bottles of wine (£10) and two cat foods (£8) so I suppose these could be ignored.

However, I still think it's an excessive amount for the amount just the two of us. Is that a lot or pretty average?

Depends what you buy. Processed junk can be bought for low sums as it’s always BOGOF, healthy fruits and fresh vegetables and it’ll be a lot higher.

I don't understand this. Most 'processed junk' is an extra, not a meal, so adds money to your bill without providing actual food.

Fruit and veg can be very cheap, along with foods like eggs, pulses and a little of cheaper cuts of meat means that you can make healthy meals without spending a lot.

It sounds incredibly cheap to me. We spend £150 a week on average - it's absolutely insane. 2 adults, a teen, a baby and a cat.

Yes, this is my experience too. When the budget has been very tight there just isn't the money for processed junk after buying all the basics.

I've been wondering about how much everyone spends on fuel in relation to their food costs (given there are large differences in how much we spend on food).
£50 a week on food, £24 on energy, two people.

I'm really shocked by this thread, we spend between £110 and £140 each week for just me and my husband 😱😱. I didn't realise how much less other people spend. Where am I going wrong?
We eat healthily so lots of fresh fruit and veg and cook everything from scratch. We eat meat regularly and only do a couple of vegan meals a week so i could change that. But often we'll have nearly all the ingredients in for them already (like this week we're doing vegan moussaka so only had to buy an aubergine). There's often some alcohol in that but still. I really need to look at this again. Im alarmed at home much we spend compared to others. We shop at asda or morrisons. Any tips would be gratefully received.

@Jurassicparkinajug do you buy branded goods - often supermarket or value brand much the same and much cheaper. Lidl and Aldi definitely worth a monthly visit for certain goods to stock up on cheaply. Things like canned drinks etc add up a lot! Cheap healthy meals - dahl (delicious, cheap and nutritious).

PinkyFlamingo · 16/05/2022 11:16

Of course its not too dear, so makes me wonder why you think it is especially if you are then willing to spend £10 on 1 meal?

puppetcat · 16/05/2022 11:41

Ref if it's too expensive I guess it depends on if you can afford it. If you're on a super low to low/moderate budget then it may be.

Jurassicparkinajug · 16/05/2022 11:41

@puppetcat thanks for that. Yeah I was looking at a Dahl recipe the other week but then forgot so thanks for the reminder. I dont but branded for my own stuff but DH is a bit fussier. I need to look at a receipt and work out where we can make cuts. Good idea about a monthly lidl stock up.

Buttonjugs · 16/05/2022 12:10

Me and my adult son spend around £100 a week on groceries at least. You’re weekly spend is actually very low.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/05/2022 14:15

Shopping daily will never save money

if you need /want to cut dowN then obviously the £10 on wine needs to stop

wildchild554 · 16/05/2022 16:29

@Billandben444 yeah it's in the anti-food waste market and always get one and make the most of it when they have them. I tend to be able to pick one of those up about once a month, more often in winter for some reason no idea why. I don't know what I would do if we didn't have it to be honest.

Leontine · 16/05/2022 19:04

Sounds great! I spend about £50 every 10 days just for me.

NewUser123456789 · 16/05/2022 19:08

I don't think I've ever spent as little as £39 on a week's food even just for myself.
