About the hell that is periods getting closer together

Tigofigo · 11/05/2022 23:51

Periods always been regularish, used to be every 31 days or so, more recently been more like 28/29... Until the last two which were 21 days and 19 days apart respectively. Feels like I barely got a week off between them!

Is this some kind of perimenopausal thing? I'm early 40s. Do I need to get checked out?

I'm only 40 and down from 28/29 days regular as clockwork and steady and manageable to 23/24 and 24 hours of flooding carnage. But doc not interested as I'm too young. Apparently.

KangarooKenny · 12/05/2022 08:07

The rage was very real for me. Funnily enough I’ve settled down just with the coil.

glebaisaword · 12/05/2022 08:11

I've always had short cycles, used to be 25 days but post kids it's been 20ish days apart for the last 6 years or so. I mentioned it to the nurse at my last smear and she just raised her eyebrows but didn't comment. I had no idea it could be to do with peri menopause. My mum started menopause very young (I think about 45) and I am heading towards 40 so I will keep an eye on this!

MintyGreenDream · 12/05/2022 08:14

Sorry to jump on with a question but I'm 42 and on the pill. Will being on it mask peri symptoms in the future meaning I'll sail through it or will it fuck things up more? Does anyone know?

ENoeuf · 12/05/2022 08:17

I started HRT this year (I’m 48). Before I had two years of this including an 18 day period. GP got the practice nurse to speak to me for that one and it was peri so I eventually caved and went for HRT. Still a bit random as I’m getting used to it. I used Clue to track mine so I had evidence for the GP.

Hohoholymoley · 12/05/2022 08:21

This is happening to me, I'm 37 could It be Peri menopause?

LegsOfJelly · 12/05/2022 08:24

Yes, this is totally peri-menopause. Join the club. My cycle has been like this for about 5 years and I'm 45.

MarmiteCoriander · 12/05/2022 00:45

Can I ask if anyone else having shortened periods, also started seeing mid cycle spotting during ovulation?

I would always speak to the gp about spotting - it's likely fine but just one of those things you should get checked

LethargeMarg · 12/05/2022 08:28

I'm 45 and was always every 28 days and now it's more like every 24- just a few days less but feels like I'm on my period every couple of weeks. Last period was super light though so hoping they stay light from now on. I have also been generally having a lot of mood swings . When do you start looking into hrt?

Actually, last week. Grin

Figgygal · 12/05/2022 08:47

Same gone from 28 days regular as clockwork to 23 days
41 so assuming peri 😫

WildCoasts · 12/05/2022 09:42

I'm late 40s. Is this what I have to look forward to? I'm regular each month. Am I heading for a late menopause given that my cycles haven't gone nuts yet?

wineymummy · 12/05/2022 09:46

I'm similar but had put it down to the covid vaccine, my cycles haven't been the same since.
I do feel quite 'stabby' too though, usually between the hours of 7.30 and 8.45 (thanks kids) so maybe it's peri. I'm only 37 though so thought it was maybe too soon.

Theunamedcat · 12/05/2022 09:51

What happens if you say no to the coil I dont want one

AllAmericanGirl · 12/05/2022 09:56

I'm 37 and this has started happening to me too. I was literally 28 days like clockwork, now 23-25. And they are more painful usually too.

I said no to the mirena for heavy bleeding and was offered a choice between the mini pill or an endometrial ablation by the gynaecologist.
I chose the ablation as I had been 9n the mini pill in the past and just bled almost constantly on it.
My GP also offered me the combined pill.

In the end the heavy bleeding settled itself so I cancelled the ablation.

romany4 · 12/05/2022 10:27

I'm at the end of peri menopause. My periods were 19/20 days apart for about a year and very heavy.
Then they spread out to 30 days+ thank god

AmayaBuzzbee · 12/05/2022 10:37

@MintyGreenDream My GP said the pill I was on was probably helping with any potential symptoms. Then I hit 45 and started spotting / bleeding in between periods despite the combination pill. Decided to drop the pill entirely (had been on them for 25yrs!), and this then settled.

I always had irregular periods (prior to pill) but now I seem to stay between 24- 28 days mostly. I am bleeding very heavily days 2&3, but otherwise no noticeable peri symptoms. Dropping the pill helped me I’d say when it stopped doing it’s job properly.

Feeellostindirection · 12/05/2022 12:32

This started for me about 4/5 years ago and I'm 42 now. Also had cycles around 31/33 days then they went to 26/28 days and were heavy and painful (also painful ovulation) and god awful mood changes, which was all new to me. Had blood tests which showed I was likely peri, went on cerazette and haven't had a period in over 3 years and my moods are settled, heaven.

Tigofigo · 13/05/2022 19:18

They're close together but not really any heavier 🤷‍♀️

Rage much more obvious too - and terrible insomnia day or two before period due.

OP posts:
RandomMess · 13/05/2022 19:23

Mine did the same from 35 days to 28 and then 40 21-23 days with at least a week of severe mastalgia and then at least a week of heavy bleeding.

Yep it was hell. Fortunately had womb ablation which just left me with 1-2 weeks of mastalgia out of 3 🙄

pointythings · 13/05/2022 20:01

Very typical for peri menopause. Started with me when I was 46-ish and lasted until the year I turned 50. Then they started spacing out longer and longer. I'm 54, haven't had one for 15 months now so I'm officially menopausal (though I still get hot flushes, mild ones).

Absolutely. Mine started at 39.

HelenMirrensWeightedBlanket · 13/05/2022 21:04

I had a ‘period’ that lasted fifteen months.

Mirena made the bleeding worse. Can’t go back on the pill due to risk of clots.

I’m having a full hysterectomy next week. Absolutely terrified but I can’t live like this.
