PLEASE help- something weird happening with my tongue

Something really weird is happening with my tongue. Over the last couple of days it’s gone very white and fuzzy in appearance. I’ve checked it tonight and it’s so much worse, there’s a greenish yellow tint to it and it looks hairy and fuzzy. I’ve also noticed big deep cracks into it- it actually looks like it’s splitting apart in places! It’s really sensitive and the tastebuds look really big and swollen on certain patches of it. The other thing is that it feels like I’ve got a big hair ball stuck at the back of my throat, I’ve checked and gargled but there’s nothing there so it must be the fuzziness on my tongue causing the feeling

does anyone know what the heck it could be and how the heck do I fix it?!

Sounds like thrush

NeverHadANickname · 06/05/2022 21:48

Apparently with thrush, you can wipe away the white stuff and see red tongue underneath, can you wipe it? I am not a doctor.

justfiveminutes · 06/05/2022 21:48

Some viral infections can make your tongue swell. Do you have any other symptoms?

Applegreenb · 06/05/2022 21:48

Have you been on any medication recently? I know some antibiotics have side affects which affect the tongue.

Any chance it could be thrush? STI? Etc

MagneticRubberDucks · 06/05/2022 21:49

That sounds like thrush to me.
have you tried googling your symptoms and looking for photos that look similar?

fassnk · 06/05/2022 21:49

Could be thrush, could also be a condition called "black hairy tongue"

QueenOfHiraeth · 06/05/2022 21:49

Might be oral thrush. You can buy Daktarin Oral gel at chemist which is really effective for it

justfiveminutes · 06/05/2022 21:50

Google or phone NHS Direct.

Flyfishin · 06/05/2022 21:50

I can wipe it and stuff does come off onto paper towel, but it doesn’t look like normal red tongue underneath, it still looks the same colour🙁

My tongue goes white when I eat/drink sugar.

Flyfishin · 06/05/2022 21:50

I’ll try and post a photo of it..

My mum had this. The pharmacist sold us some stuff that sorted it

hellcatspanglelalala · 06/05/2022 21:51

I'd say thrush...pharmacist will be able to give you something for it.

AnyFucker · 06/05/2022 21:52

Sounds like geographic tongue

FabulousKilljoys · 06/05/2022 21:54

Doesn't the tongue go like that with scarlet fever?

Flyfishin · 06/05/2022 21:56

In the first photo I tried to get a close up to the tip of my tongue, that’s the part where there’s cracks and the tastebuds look as if they are big and hanging off but it was hard to get a good photo oops!

I keep feeling like I have to scrape a hair ball off my tonsils but there’s nothing there! I can feel it when I swallow and it’s so annoying

Get Nystatin prescribed by doctor. Looks like thrush. I get this when using inhalers frequently.

Flyfishin · 06/05/2022 22:01

Yeah I’ve heard of geographic tongue I think! usually I do get the patches that move around , but I’ve never had the cracks or the yellow hairiness and the feeling like somethings stuck to my throat 🙁

Have you thought of speaking to your doctor, dentist or pharmacist? You know, people who can actually look at your tongue.

No need to be so rude 🥴 last time I checked the dentist and pharmacy are closed at 10pm sooo, just posted to see if anyone else had this before

I think you need to see a gp or pharmacist. A furry tongue isn't unusual, that's why you need to clean it with your Toothbrush or scraper when you clean your teeth.

But if it's sore etc then I would suggest it's thrush or something else which needs treating.

Not trying to be rude here but did the symptoms only start around 10pm or have they been happening since earlier today or even earlier?

I would recommend making a solution of salty water (a saline solution if you will) and swirling it around your mouth and spitting it out. Perhaps disolve a Disprin in some water and swirl it around your mouth (gargle too as you mention you can feel it at the back of your throat) and spit it out.

Have you eaten anything in the past 24/48 hours that you may be developing an intolerance to?
