PLEASE help- something weird happening with my tongue

Something really weird is happening with my tongue. Over the last couple of days it’s gone very white and fuzzy in appearance. I’ve checked it tonight and it’s so much worse, there’s a greenish yellow tint to it and it looks hairy and fuzzy. I’ve also noticed big deep cracks into it- it actually looks like it’s splitting apart in places! It’s really sensitive and the tastebuds look really big and swollen on certain patches of it. The other thing is that it feels like I’ve got a big hair ball stuck at the back of my throat, I’ve checked and gargled but there’s nothing there so it must be the fuzziness on my tongue causing the feeling

does anyone know what the heck it could be and how the heck do I fix it?!

Definately thrush if you go to your local pharmacy tomorrow they will sell you something to clear it up 😊

CrazyCatLady13 · 06/05/2022 22:57

I used vinegar to get rid of oral thrush, the gel didn't work for me

Might be oral thrush. You can buy Daktarin Oral gel at chemist which is really effective for it

Yes its this and Daktarin will fix it. If you've got a 24 hour chemist around you I'd go and grab some now.

do Not swill a disprin round your mouth!! Hot salty mouthwash will do no harm so worth a try, get to a dentist Monday you may need a referral to an oral medicine specialist. I had this after antibiotics it was thrush and just resolved after time x

JollyJunee · 06/05/2022 23:07

Oh, that does look like geographic tongue, one of my sons has it. I don’t think the white parts look odd, is it that they just look different beside the redder parts? Agree a pharmacist would be a good call tomorrow.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 06/05/2022 23:09

I have had oral thrush before. I found the stuff from the chemist a bit rubbish as it's a gel and you have to keep it on your tongue which is really hard.

I have found the best way to get rid of it is gargling with a solution of salty water with a couple of drops of tea tree in (not gargling like at the back of your throat but keeping it in your mouth a few minutes swirling it round then spitting out) every few hours, keeping my teeth really clean, and avoiding sugar and caffeine and alcohol and dairy while it's really bad. Clears it up in a couple of days

Looks like geographic tongue to me too. Likely causes are hormonal changes.

Sycamor · 06/05/2022 23:24

Looks very like geographic tongue. Nothing to worry about but can be sore eating certain foods. Flares up and settles down again. Give ur tongue a gentle clean with ur toothbrush daily to remove any buildup.

Hairy tongue - sounds vile but is common and not dangerous.

My dentist recommended a scraper which I hated but used a bit. I am keeping it away by using my water pic on my tongue. I drink red wine so mine really was black as well as 'hairy'. I also have geographic tongue and quite deep fissures. none of it is a real health problem - but the black hairy tongue looked revolting.

mackthepony · 07/05/2022 01:59

I have no idea but you have my sympathy op, hope you feel better soon 🍷

ChocAuVin · 07/05/2022 02:12

The partially denuded papillae (smooth m
patches) look like geographic tongue — I’ve had it all my life (mine is triggered by dairy and resolves totally when I’m strict about my diet). But it sounds like you’re aware of the GT as a pre-existing thing so maybe there’s a fungal infection or a reaction caused by another intolerance?

Maybe treat for oral thrush but keep the thought that it could be a new or worsening intolerance. Usual suspects are dairy, gluten, other food proteins or medications.

Good luck Flowers

Google covid tongue... we all had white/green tongue and sore throat, followed by a positive LFT.

AnyFucker · 06/05/2022 21:52

Sounds like geographic tongue

This.

OldWivesTale · 07/05/2022 03:54

Have you been using mouthwash? I get thrush in my mouth if I use mouthwash as it kills all the "good" bacteria.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 07/05/2022 03:56

It could be more than one thing, eg geographic tongue and thrush?
Try and get someone to see it later today OP, but I don't think it is anything to worry about.

Nat6999 · 07/05/2022 04:11

Try Corsodyl mouthwash, if it is thrush it should clear it up. Have you got any symptoms like sores in the corners of your mouth? If so you need to ask your GP for a blood test for your B12 levels as you may be deficient.

Luckyelephant1 · 07/05/2022 04:17

It's geographic tongue. Nothing super serious but I'd see a dentist ASAP and in the meantime head to local pharmacy. Dentist may refer to oral medicine specialist too.

Massive generalisation but most GP's aren't great with oral issues and would tell you to see your dentist anyway so seeing a GP is probably a wasted trip.

In the first photo I tried to get a close up to the tip of my tongue, that’s the part where there’s cracks and the tastebuds look as if they are big and hanging off but it was hard to get a good photo oops!

Looks like strep!

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 07/05/2022 04:25

But usually with strep you would feel sick.
