to ask Christians about dinosaurs...

This is a serious question - so I have been thinking a lot lately about whether God exists, the meaning of life and why is the world in such a terrible state... been thinking about going to church but still feel I am on the fence. One question which has really got me thinking (after watching dear old David Attenborough... ) is where do dinosaurs fit into all this. Sorry if this sounds very weird but I would love to hear an explanation!

They lived along time ago and then became extinct.

TaVeryMuchLove · 29/04/2022 17:47

I’ve also genuinely wondered this too!

HirplesWithHaggis · 29/04/2022 17:47

My Born Again sister says dinosaur remains were planted by Satan to confuse us.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 29/04/2022 17:49

I'm sure there's a thread about Christians Against Dinosaurs in Classics.
God apparently created the fossils.

Cliftontherocks · 29/04/2022 17:50

I’ve heard that fossils are fake and that The Devil planted them.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 29/04/2022 17:50

There are 31.5 million Christians in the UK only about 6,000 people in the UK believe dinosaurs don’t exist because the they take the bible literally. Did you think most Christians believe dinosaurs are fake?

CounsellorTroi · 29/04/2022 17:50

Most Christians believe in evolution so dinosaurs are not an issue for them . It’s only those who believe the Bible is literal truth and that the Earth is 6,000 years old who have a problem with them.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/04/2022 17:50

I was on a Christians Against Dinosaurs page on FB but genuinely couldn’t tell if people were being serious or not.

SallyWD · 29/04/2022 17:51

I asked a Jehovas Witness about this once and she replied "Oh we know dinosaurs existed. God put them on earth before humans so they could flatten all the vegetation." Its almost like they make it up as they go along!

fighoney · 29/04/2022 17:52

Some Christians believe the creation story literally, in which case dinosaurs would have been in the garden of Eden at some point. Some believe that the creation story is telling us much more about the relationship between God and Man, and isn't meant to read as a science textbook.

Either way I would encourage you to go to a church or pick up a bible or see if there are any local alpha or Christianity explores courses near you. You don't have to be fully committed, they are great places to ask questions.

Aposterhasnoname · 29/04/2022 17:52

My DH is a committed Christian. He’s says dinosaurs lived 65 million years ago then were wiped out, possibly by an asteroid, and became extinct. Only nutters think any thing else (his exact words)

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/04/2022 17:52

Not all christian denominations are creationist.

Needmorelego · 29/04/2022 17:53

According to my childhood Catholic friend their bones and fossils were put there to confuse us.
She also said the reason we have bells on bikes is so if you are lost ring the bell and God will know to lead you home.
Admittedly we were aged about 8 when these theories were discussed.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/04/2022 17:53

I went to a convent school and was taught about evolution.

sussexman · 29/04/2022 17:54

Fair to say that there are a range of views on Dinosaurs (and evolution and and and). Personally, I don't see any issue here - it's not like the Bible is in any sense a science book, it wasn't created for that purpose.

As for being on the fence - Churches are for everyone - they aren't a club for believers, find one near you that looks like it might work for you (lots of churches will have youtube channels you can check out before hand) and give it a try.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/04/2022 17:54

Most Christians aren't Young Earth Creationists. Some Christians are even paleontologists.

Madhairday · 29/04/2022 17:54

I'm a Christian. As far as I know dinosaurs existed tens or even hundreds of millions of years ago, millions of years before homo sapiens.

I don't have any issue with evolutionary theory or the aging of the earth, because I don't think there is a conflict between faith and science. Op I've found this a really good website for this kind of thing:

biologos.org/common-questions#christianity-and-science

Carpy88999 · 29/04/2022 17:56

If Christians believe in evolution as opposed to creationism and what point on our journey from small rodent like mammal to homo sapian did God decide to care about us more than the rest of his 'creation'?

3ormorecharacters · 29/04/2022 17:57

Dinosaur believing Christian here. Personally I don't see a conflict. I see the story of Creation as an allegory for how humans lived in harmony with each other (largely), nature and God for the millions of years we were hunter-gatherers. Then the Agricultural Revolution came along and ever since we've been growing apart from God, from nature and from each other. I don't take it literally and don't know many who do.

GrumpyPanda · 29/04/2022 18:00

You've got a funny idea about Christians.

MintyMoocow · 29/04/2022 18:01

poor things never made into the ark 😥

bebanjo · 29/04/2022 18:01

I’m an atheist but have known Christian’s. Some have told me that evolution is true but it was god that started the Big Bang. Some believe that fossils were put there by the devil to stop people believing in god. Someone once told me dinosaurs were a hoax, just didn’t believe at all. So, bit of a mixed bag.

CrunchyCarrot · 29/04/2022 18:02

I'm a Christian and absolutely believe in dinosaurs! They're awesome, and part of God's creations. I had no idea some Christians didn't believe in them till I was chatting to an online Christian friend who doesn't think they exist. I don't know how they can deny all the evidence? Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, dinos are very much real.

wantmy · 29/04/2022 18:03

One of my friends believes the story of creation utterly as literal truth.

We don't talk about the dinosaurs

LizzieMacQueen · 29/04/2022 18:03

So I think it's been shown that dinosaurs had feathers so were (mostly) flightless birds. Large ones, obviously, I could google but can someone here confirm that please.
