To think it's too cold for school uniform shorts?

Two DS's, both in nursery. Nursery have said summer uniform starting from today. Which means shorts for boys. U.K. based, feels a bit too cold to me!
But then again I thought, girls always wear dresses (though with tights I suppose).
AIBU to think it's too cold?

DS has never worn school trousers as he prefers shorts. I used to buy him trousers and he would never wear them. We walk a mile to school in all weathers and he always has bare legs.

We're in Scotland, it's still quite cold, and most of the kids are in shorts/summer dresses already. It's not compulsory so I assume they are choosing to wear it. My DS is choosing shorts/long socks, he wears them most of the year.

For those with DC’s at schools with this shorts rule - I assume girls can also wear shorts during the same period of the year?

There's loads of girls in black or grey shorts and cullotes at my DS's school although most choose the gingham summer dresses.

We don't have the crazy strict uniform policy of many English schools though

HighInPolyunsaturates · 26/04/2022 09:57

Culottes even. Not cullotes. Not a word I have to spell very often!

My son is in shorts at his primary. He prefers them.

It should be personal choice. Ds would have worn shorts in December if I allowed it. Other children would cry with the cold.

For most schools with this strict uniform code, the chances are girls will go from winter uniform to summer uniform too, which will likely be a gingham summer dress and short white socks

Furrbabymama87 · 26/04/2022 11:02

It's usually optional. If you think it's too cold for shorts, put him in long pants. They can't insist on shorts if trousers are part of the regular uniform.

BogRollBOGOF · 26/04/2022 11:05

DS is a trouser refuser. We've found that at -6⁰C plus wind chill he will finally consent to over-trousers on top of his shorts.

In actual cold weather, he wears long socks (normally slouched down but easy to pull up) or leg warmers. TBH that's probably warmer than thin polyester trousers anyway.

He's made it to 11 without getting hypothermia, and we walk around a lot and do lots of outdoor activities, he's not living constantly in heated cars/ buildings. In the era when boys wore shorts as standard until adolescence, there wasn't central heating or cars that warmed quickly. Presumably it was due to the cost of growing out of clothing and constantly patching torn knees. There were boys at my primary school who wore shorts year round because they constantly shredded their knees playing football.

I’m in Scotland too and rarely see a boy in shorts even in June. A few girls in summer dresses later in the year but certainly not at the moment.

LadyDanburysHat · 26/04/2022 15:18

I'm in Scotland and both of my boys wore shorts all year round in primary. My DD is currently in skirt and socks, only wears tights when it is properly cold, and double figures is not properly cold.
