To think it's too cold for school uniform shorts?

Two DS's, both in nursery. Nursery have said summer uniform starting from today. Which means shorts for boys. U.K. based, feels a bit too cold to me!
But then again I thought, girls always wear dresses (though with tights I suppose).
AIBU to think it's too cold?

It may be the summer term but it’s certainly cold for April! I’m still in winter clothes whilst having been dressed for summer for part of March.

DS old school only had shorts for boys until year 5. Long socks in winter.
It was a mad, outdated uniform!

it is outdated as in the days when little boys almost universally wore shorts, they also wore knee length coats. These days children tend to wear short jackets.

He did wear a knee length duffle as part of that uniform. And a cap FFS

I'm also in Scotland and mine wore shorts all the way through primary, as did most of his peers. I bought trousers for winter in P1 and P2 but they were a complete waste of money - worn once in P1 and never wore trousers again until his high school bump up day. Never complained of being cold, only odd complaint was skinned knees on a salted playground in winter could be a bit nipppy.

I have to say, my DS has had way fewer skinned knees over winter with his knee-reinforced trousers on. Spring/Summer/Autumn both his knees are permanently in a massive plaster 🙄

It ridiculous. Everyone should be able to choose whether they want to wear shorts or trousers, at the very least. The whole uniform thing is ridiculous but not being able to dress according to weather by your own preference is just disrespectful and plain stupid.

It depends on where you are in the UK I think, and perhaps the age of the school or nursery. Tropical south London is very different from rural Scotland, for example.

My son has only ever worn shorts to school (it's the uniform) he's in YR5.

It's usually optional. If you think it's too cold for shorts, put him in long pants. They can't insist on shorts if trousers are part of the regular uniform.

Actually, this doesn't apply in independent schools.

If the rules say "shorts from x date" then that's what you have to wear unless the weather is abnormally bad, in which case the head will send an email home to parents giving their permission to wear "incorrect" uniform for the day.

When I was at school, you also needed permission to remove your blazer in class and you couldn't wear short sleeved shirts until a certain date either Grin

The whole thing is utterly bonkers looking back but it was just considered normal to us and nobody broke the rules - or if they did, they'd be sent home and not allowed to return until they wore the correct uniform.

I think it's odd that your nursery are advising this. Nursery kids often pick up colds... its not warm enough. I know we are all im different cities but today I had jeans and a jumper and a jacket on.

It's not the weather for shorts... just because we have had some nicer days recently.

At DS's school shorts are compulsory in lower primary all year around. We are in Scotland. It was fine, it was more of a struggle getting him to wear long trousers in upper primary.
