AIBU for this to piss me off?

Attached is a pic of the side of our house. Our neighbours have put a bin store next to our fence, which is fine however the tops of the bin store flap over in the wind All The Time!

I have flipped them back over numerous times and Mr neighbour flips them back if he sees when he gets home but Mrs neighbour often can't reach and so she leaves them.

The bin store is also noisy - as well the noise of the tops flapping the whole thing moves around on the floor a bit. The front doors also open and scraps on the floor in the wind. The bin store is below ish our bedroom window and can be noisy at night.

They don't seem to care that it happens and aren't doing anything permanent to prevent it? Luckily the tops don't hit our house when they go over but I would like to put some plants there and it would hit those.

Would this bother you?

Ask them to turn them sideways as it is damaging the fence and you want to have some plants on your side.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 24/04/2022 12:33

Take a screwdriver out, remove the lid from the hinges and pop the lids back over their side of the fence.

HeadToToesNo · 24/04/2022 12:33

That would definitely piss me off, they are really ugly. Can you ask them to attach something to secure the lids down or turn them the other way?

Pinkywoo · 24/04/2022 12:34

It would definitely piss me off. They need to put some kind of latch on the lids to stop them blowing open, and something to stop them going beyond vertical so they don't damage any plants on your side.

Discovereads · 24/04/2022 12:35

theyre illegally encroaching onto your property by flapping over the fence. You’d be within rights to unscrew them and place them on their side of the fence.

Howaboutnope · 24/04/2022 12:37

Wtf is that. They need to buy a proper bin store which has latches for both the doors and lids. You need to address this op that is really taking the piss.

SunshineAndFizz · 24/04/2022 12:51

Urgh. You definitely need to speak to them about this. As PP said, explain you have plans for flowers down the side so they need to find a way of securing the lids.

Nip this in the bud asap.

SkiingIsHeaven · 24/04/2022 12:54

Close them and put something heavy on top, like a lump of concrete.

VerifiedBot2351 · 24/04/2022 12:54

That would annoy me no end.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 24/04/2022 12:56

Thank you! I feel better having other people agree that I am not being petty.

They can't turn them because they would then block their garage.

Take a screwdriver out, remove the lid from the hinges and pop the lids back over their side of the fence.

So pass-agg!

Just ask them to put on a latch or similar to keep the lids down.

Scarydinosaurs · 24/04/2022 12:57

Can’t they just put a brick on top of each one like you do with any old bin?!

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 24/04/2022 12:59

I would put a heavy rock or brick on them tbh.

TigerLilyTail · 24/04/2022 13:01

I was also going to suggest placing a brick on top of each lid.

I think this would annoy most people.

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 24/04/2022 13:01

Tell them they need to add a latch.
Give them a week.
If they haven't fixed the situation then just take the lids off. If they're overhanging your side, just remove them and give them back.

MrsAmber · 24/04/2022 13:08

That would annoy me and if I was your NDN I’d be trying to find a solution rather than leaving it! Can’t understand why they don’t do something about it!

Think it’s time to maybe put some plants there, as PP suggested, can you get some tall bamboo in pots, then at least you won’t be able to see the ugly thing, the lids then won’t be able to fall onto your side? Yes, it shouldn’t be something you have to do but might be one solution.

NameGoesHere · 24/04/2022 13:16

They need to sort this out!

Lonecatwithkitten · 24/04/2022 13:16

It is the ugliest bin store I have ever seen and IMO looks worse than wheelie bins.

SolasAnla · 24/04/2022 13:23

Thats not your problem they are being CF, you have a right to be able to walk around your property without a risk of being battered by next doors bin.

Do not put any weight on the lids, if you get the ratio wrong you have a flying rock catapulted at your house.

Ask them to add a latch to stop the wind blowing the lid off.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 24/04/2022 13:27

This is why I haven't put anything heavy on them. I am concerned both the lid and the weight will come flying over!

They don't seem to care in any way and in fact when I went out the other day Mr neighbour was pulling the lids back but couldn't reach so I pushed the lid over and he laughed like it was funny.

Unfortunately in typical manner I am guilty of not dealing with this straightaway - this has embarrassingly been going on for months.

Extend the fence with sturdy trellis?

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 24/04/2022 13:34

Well, you're going to have to be an adult about this and deal with it straight on.

If you're ever out there weeding against that fence and those come flying over, you're going to take quite a whack to your head.

It'a Sunday. Good chance they are off work and might be home. Go over and speak to them now. Point out the risk you will be at if you are weeding by the fence. Tell them they need to do something now or next time they come over, you'll remove the panels.

apricotlane · 24/04/2022 13:36

Lol what the heck is that? The bins would be way nicer! Absolutely it would do my head in. He needs to put some catches/locks on them. Lol what the heck are people even thinking. Why would you not make it out of nice wood or something - how has it improved anything!!!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 24/04/2022 13:41

Sturdy trellis your side and climbing plants
or speak to them but probably both

sst1234 · 24/04/2022 13:57

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 24/04/2022 12:33

Take a screwdriver out, remove the lid from the hinges and pop the lids back over their side of the fence.

This is the kind of advice people like to give but would never do it themselves.
OP, it sound obvious but have you made a serious but humble complaint to them about it?
