AIBU for this to piss me off?

Attached is a pic of the side of our house. Our neighbours have put a bin store next to our fence, which is fine however the tops of the bin store flap over in the wind All The Time!

I have flipped them back over numerous times and Mr neighbour flips them back if he sees when he gets home but Mrs neighbour often can't reach and so she leaves them.

The bin store is also noisy - as well the noise of the tops flapping the whole thing moves around on the floor a bit. The front doors also open and scraps on the floor in the wind. The bin store is below ish our bedroom window and can be noisy at night.

They don't seem to care that it happens and aren't doing anything permanent to prevent it? Luckily the tops don't hit our house when they go over but I would like to put some plants there and it would hit those.

Would this bother you?

Tube of No Nails. Next time they are on your side glue and flip back over.

RealBecca · 24/04/2022 14:02

I'd say that that nearly smacked you on the face last week when you were walking past and can they sort it out asap please because it's dangerous.

I like this solution!

This is why I haven't put anything heavy on them. I am concerned both the lid and the weight will come flying over!

They don't seem to care in any way and in fact when I went out the other day Mr neighbour was pulling the lids back but couldn't reach so I pushed the lid over and he laughed like it was funny.

Unfortunately in typical manner I am guilty of not dealing with this straightaway - this has embarrassingly been going on for months.

This would have been the ideal time for you to mention that the lids are constantly flying over onto your side of the fence and you have almost been hit by one 😉.
You could also mention how noisy the lids are and ask them to fit latches to them.
If this is ignored, do unscrew them while they’re out, make sure you jump on them to bend them (amazing how strong the wind is to do that 😇) and shove them over the fence.
Btw he laughed because he knows what is happening is wrong.

Am considering writing down the issue and posting it through their door. I know this is a bit wet (!) but we have another issue with them that they haven't addressed even though we asked nicely.

They have a gutter which overhangs our property (houses were built this way) their gutter is leaking and drops a cascade of water outside our back door when it rains. Dh went over and told them about this and asked nicely if they could get someone to sort it out. This was months ago and they haven't. The dropping of water has actually eroded some of our slab now. They did suggest dh could sort it and they would pay him (dh works in IT and has no gutter fixing skills!). We were going to put this issue in writing anyway.

I know we would need to declare this on any moving detail but we have no intention on moving and will take the hit. They don't actually speak to us now. Not sure why. We are nice people I think!

If you go down the note route, add "hey, tried to catch you to speak to you but I think we keep missing each other so I've gone for a note instead....."

Then it's like the note is more convenient than because you are nervous.

I'd get a length of gutter and string it up to redirect their water cascade directly back onto their own property.

That is so disgustingly ugly. Put up some strong trellis - they are dirty sods letting their bin lids intrude on your garden.

CottonSock · 24/04/2022 15:20

You are not being unreasonable, that looks horrible

thebeespyjamas · 24/04/2022 17:24

Yes, this would bother me to the back teeth. I'd rip the things off to be honest. You can't just fit something that annoys someone else and bugger off without a care in the world.

hulahooper2 · 24/04/2022 17:59

They could buy a bungee cord to hold lids down , otherwise advise them you will remove the kids next time they swing into your garden

LoveSpringDaffs · 24/04/2022 18:06

@hulahooper2 yheu might be glad of that?!?!

@TheGoodEnoughWife id write a formal letter re both the gutter & the (most fugly) bin store. With an 'if these are not done promptly, legal s room will be taken' type comment.

Thst bin store should be illegal it's so ugly.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/04/2022 18:10

Yes that would annoy me. And they aren’t bins, they look like they are skips. They bloody hurt when they whack you and can easily knock you out cold. (use them daily at work).
Ask them nicely to fix them or stick a paving slab on the top of the lids. A brick won’t be enough.
