To refuse to move from fast food table

curlymom · 23/04/2022 20:36

So I ordered my food and sat down on a free table next to a plug as my phone needed charging. Fast food associate said he will bring my food right over.
five mins later an old lady said she was intending to sit there. I said it’s ok you can sit opposite on spare chair or on empty table next to me. She said no and told me to move. I said no as I am needing to charge my phone. Other random old woman interfered and told her i am selfish and she could sit on table next to me. To be honest if she asked nicely I would have moved but if there are spare tables why should I? AIBU to refuse??

Why do people think it’s ok to charge their phones in a random restaurant or cafe? I’ve always found it kind of rude, but I’m probably in the minority…

Itsallaboutthebenjamins · 23/04/2022 20:41

What were her reasons for wanting to sit there and why did the other woman get involved. How odd.

Theunamedcat · 23/04/2022 20:41

YANBU I think you were nice to offer to share the table. Strange that she was so obsessed with that table she couldn't sit on the empty one next to you. If I was in your position and didn't need the plug I probably would have just moved but as you needed the plug I don't blame you for not moving!

Isn't that why they have plugs in cafes and on buses etc?

The other woman apparently heard her say ooh I think I will sit here once I order apparently. She was just interfering to be honest and being a do gooder

Certain fast food places have specific plus for you to use.

Hawkins001 · 23/04/2022 20:43

*plugs

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/04/2022 20:43

Nah, not selfish. You can't really reverse a table by intending to sit there.

Charging sockets seem to cause loads of problems though! They have them scattered around the club room at my gym, but all at the four seater tables. Half the time, there are groups looking for tables but singles/pairs at the four seaters not moving as they are using the socket. They really need to move some of those tables.

Theunamedcat · 23/04/2022 20:41

No reasons. Sense of entitlement I guess

Oh ok, I didn’t realise. Thought it just a random plug!

The plugs weren’t the issue. There were plugs at other end too. She just decided to make me move because she wanted that table. I refused as I thought it’s ridiculous to think you can do that. My food was coming to my table number too

  1. who stands in a fast food restaurant, looks at a table and says out loud ‘I think I’ll sit there after I order my food’?
  2. that isn’t actually reserving a table. It’s musing about where you would choose to sit if the table is still free when you come to sit down.
SoggyPaper · 23/04/2022 20:52

not that reserving tables is even a thing in fast food restaurants. You don’t phone up Burger King and reserve a table for 1 at 12:30.

It’s really weird. If I fancy a table I hope it’s there when I come back from ordering but I wouldn’t ask someone to move if it was taken! Some people are so weird

@splishsplashsploshsplish why be so mean? Who are you to say if a post is boring or not?
The op wanted an opinion & so is perfectly entitled to ask. If it's so boring to you just scroll & move on, or entertain us all with your interesting/witty anecdotes?

SoggyPaper · 23/04/2022 20:54

Do you think she gets on the bus, heads to the seat she’s decided she’d most like to sit in while waiting at the bus stop, and then tells the person sitting in it to move?

I have seen people do that in London. Definitely people are getting much more entitled

The Burger King nearest to me has usb points to charge your phone?

FlibbertyGiblets · 23/04/2022 20:57

Not sure the relevance of being an 'old lady'? or the other 'old woman'? Have a think about why you want to show the opposition, so to speak, in a different light. Silly old dear, stupid old ladies, querulous and contrary, entitled old biddy, that kind of thing. Your story is not so spicy if it involved three women, is it? Casual ageism? You tell me.

Exactly what you said. OP wanted an opinion, and I gave mine.
It's not something that I would waste my energy getting riled about.
I hope that OP enjoyed her food nonetheless. Smile

I’m no spring chicken either!
