Are Daleks scary or AIBU?!

Light hearted. So I realised today that I haven't watched an episode of Doctor Who since I was 6 after I got scared by the Daleks. I am now in my mid forties and haven't tuned in since 😂Are they scary?! Am I missing anything? AIBU? Yes they are scary, no they aren't!

OP posts:
Wheelz46 · 20/04/2022 22:32

Totally scary 😆 they use to petrify me as a child, still gives me the chills when I hear that phrase 'I am a dalek'.

Think I might be sleeping under the covers tonight 🤣

Thedogscollar · 20/04/2022 22:36

Exterminate exterminate🤣🤣

EthelbertaChickerel · 20/04/2022 22:36

Yes they can be seriously scary!

seensome · 20/04/2022 22:37

Yes same here, I haven't been interested in dr who since I was scared as a child watching it.

TottersBlankly · 20/04/2022 22:38

So you’ve basically missed the most important phenomenon in broadcast TV of the noughties?

Shock

This is not lighthearted; this is serious

No. They’re not scary now.

Start watching now. So you’ll be all caught up by the time RTD returns.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 20/04/2022 22:38

Not as scary as those creepy angel statues that moved closer to you when you closed your eyes. I’d take a dalek any day over them.

I feel like if I roll over in bed one is going to be staring at me now 🙈

plinkplinkfizzer · 20/04/2022 22:38

Totally scary (1970's child ) . In fact any robot of any kind makes me pale 🤖.

Hohofortherobbers · 20/04/2022 22:44

Absolutely terrifying, don't know why the whole stair thing didn't reassure me. My dc would not be scared of daleks now, they're not even scared of Jaws Confused

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 20/04/2022 22:45

You're a wuss, OP. Nothing scary about daleks. Tsk.

Triffids on the other hand, now they're scary. Even now, the sight of a particularly stocky stick of rhubarb can give me the willies.

StarlingsInTheRoof · 20/04/2022 22:46

Totally scary as a child. My problem with all of the Dr Who bad guys is that the series has been going on since the 60's, so they have all been defeated countless times. If they can be defeated every time they are no longer scary

MangyInseam · 20/04/2022 22:58

Yes, they were scary. They are not so scary now, though.

MargaretThursday · 20/04/2022 22:59

They became less scary when one came to town and had to go inside when it rained because it would short circuit.

Forget any other weapons, a hosepipe would see the lot of them off. 😁

DanielRicciardosSmile · 20/04/2022 23:00

Yes. They're basically space nazis, obsessed with racial purity and hating everyone and everything that isn't one of them.

Cybermen are scarier though.

PurpleParrotfish · 20/04/2022 23:08

I never watched it as a kid but have watched all the new Doctor Who as an adult and find the Daleks… a bit tedious, sorry OP! They just turn up, shoot lots of people and are defeated. Although they are supposed to be super scary there’s none of the actual scare factor that there can be in a story where you don’t know what’s going on. The Cybermen converting people can be scary, the Weeping Angels are scary, the Daleks… meh.

LowbrowVictoriana · 20/04/2022 23:15

I never found them scary; they always made me laugh because of how perpetually angry and indignant they were!
The German speaking dalek was hilarious!
"Exterminieren!"

OneTC · 20/04/2022 23:19

Similar age and yes I found them scary but carried on watching it until it became persistently crap

I found the Cybermen more scary at the time

BookkeeperBobby · 20/04/2022 23:25

They aren't scary but there was a great episode in the noughties Who (before it got shit and preachy) where the daleks and cybermen had a face-off.

Sample lines:

  • this is not war, this is pest control
  • you are better at one thing. You are better at DYING

Weeping angels are definitely scary and also brought Carey Mulligan to the world. And the gasmask Wilson-eating "are you my mummy" child is terrifying. But daleks are not.

Chiefofstaff · 20/04/2022 23:25

They frightened the life out of me as a kid. I think it’s the rising hysteria in their voices when they repeat EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE. I found them less scary when they could get upstairs. They just look daft when they do that. I think cybermen are scarier though. The 2-parter where it showed the process from people into cybermen still gives me occasional nightmares. The scene when they’re in the old hospital ward and one is repeating “pain, pain, pain” over and over and a nurse comes and turns it’s volume down and says “better”, ie she can’t hear them expressing pain still gives me chills thinking of it. I’ve a shit memory but remember it vividly as you can telll. And I was in my 40s when that aired and I watch all sorts of horror and sci-fi with no trouble. But back to Dalek, YANBU - they’re scary fuckers.

Ridiculous post. Daleks aren't robots.

Hawkins001 · 20/04/2022 23:31

Hardly scary, basically just robots, the weeping angels are a different kettle so to speak. Although saying that, I'd be more wary of the manipulative master.

Hawkins001 · 20/04/2022 23:31

There's also the strangeness of miracle day, in torchwood

Magnoliayellowbird · 20/04/2022 23:33

They are terrifying. I still remember the total horror of the stairs.

Dundonian · 20/04/2022 23:47

They terrified me as a kid in the 70s and I've never watched the show since. Awful!

I found the Angels terrifying the first episode they appeared in. But they became less and less so as they used them more in the program.

Yes! The thought of the angels scares me so much. 🌹
