Are Daleks scary or AIBU?!

Light hearted. So I realised today that I haven't watched an episode of Doctor Who since I was 6 after I got scared by the Daleks. I am now in my mid forties and haven't tuned in since 😂Are they scary?! Am I missing anything? AIBU? Yes they are scary, no they aren't!

I don't find Daleks scary, Doctor Who monsters for the most part are just a bit silly apart from the Silence that are actually terrifying.

stayathomer · 21/04/2022 06:43

Their voices! Shudders, yup, terrifying. I don't know if you watched it back now would it be as scary or if it would be worse (I recently saw a bit of the film night of the living dead and cringy as it was it was still terrifying!!)

Daleksatemyshed · 21/04/2022 06:52

When I was 6, scary as Hell, now, not so much but I just love a Dalek episode. I think my user name gives away my lifelong dalek obsession 🤣

GlumyGloomer · 21/04/2022 07:01

They were scary, until they were massively over used. Definitely watch the Eccleston season though Op, there's a great Darlek episode in there (skip The Empty Child/Doctor Dances though if you are of a sensitive disposition)
And yes, Weeping Angles massively scary until likewise overused.

EthelbertaChickerel · 21/04/2022 22:20

Actually, after giving it a bit of serious thought, I think the Vashta Nerada(from Silence in the Library) are the scariest monsters- they're not in every shadow, but they could be in any shadow! V creepy

BotterMon · 21/04/2022 22:23

I used to hide behind the sofa as a child as was terrified by them. I then left the UK for about 35 years and was amazed to find that Dr Who still existed.
The Daleks still freak me out and I can't watch it.

Yes Daley’s are scared and reached a whole new level when they floated up and were no longer stopped by stairs. However they pale into insignificance against the truly terrifying cybermen

TheDogsMother · 21/04/2022 22:56

They were terrifying and we lived in a ground floor flat so I never felt quite safe from them. When we moved to a house I felt much safer as they would be rubbish with stairs 🤣

FreddyVoorhees · 21/04/2022 23:02

The modern Doctor Who is sanitized rubbish.

Genesis of the Daleks however was dark as hell and laid on the Nazi theme massively especially for a "kids" series.

The Daleks got worse though mostly due to the BBC sabotaging the series with death by budget cuts.

JeffThePilot · 21/04/2022 23:03

I absolutely loved them as a child and always cried when they were defeated. I was a weird kid though.

They became less scary when one came to town and had to go inside when it rained because it would short circuit.

Forget any other weapons, a hosepipe would see the lot of them off. 😁

@MargaretThursday Thank you for sharing this as I now feel a whole lot better knowing what to do if ever I am confronted by a Dalek! Unroll the hosepipe!!!

So it seems that 40% of people think I am being unreasonable with my Dalekaphobia! But 60% don't and sounds like some of you are still hiding behind the sofa with my 6 year old self! I am slightly alarmed to find out that there are some even more terrifying creatures in Dr Who but don't think I am brave enough to watch and investigate further.

As an aside, I did watch Jaws all by myself and am still proud! It was a big moment (but not as big as that boat that Jaws made a sandwich from!).

Cybermen were definitely scariest for me.

fussychica · 21/04/2022 23:09

Cybermen were definitely scariest for me.

Me too at the time of watching, but I saw the episodes with the Autons years later and had the creeps for days 😬

Toddlerteaplease · 22/04/2022 00:00

My mum used to hide behind the sofa when she was younger. Not scary as they can't climb stairs. So just go upstairs 😂

707smile · 22/04/2022 00:05

Haha, no they're not in the slightest bit scary. I'm a child of the 90s and I never understand how my parents had found them scary. The stone angels on the other hand...

707smile · 22/04/2022 00:05

** never understood

CPL593H · 22/04/2022 00:14

60s child, hiding behind sofa terrified but I had a strange fascination with them, Mum made me a Dalek cake with liquorice stick gun things and carefully picked out brown Smarties for the dot bits. It sat on the dining room sideboard until it almost decayed as I refused to let it be cut Grin because I loved it so much. I remember the first episode when they could fly upstairs.

Then came the reboot and they became touching and vulnerable at times, the one wanting to feel the sun who Rose communicated with and Dalek Sec...

I suppose I could write "My Life in Daleks" , really!

O

CPL593H · 22/04/2022 00:19

I may still have an automated Dalek model around somewhere...I call him Fred...

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/04/2022 00:38

I'm also scared of them. Went to a car show where there was also a comic con in the next room and there were Daleks moving around in the corridor. Seriously freaked me out

SendCakes · 22/04/2022 00:42

The Daleks have been a bit overdone and lost their edge since I was a child, the episodes with the weeping angels and when the Ood went bad & Dr went to centre of earth spooked me even with annoying Catherine Tate but I'm a wuss. Sadly it started going downhill with the later Matt Smith ones and became dull, predictable with crap celeb cameo's I've not bothered since. Loved Torchwood too till did the longer joint US version, although John Barrowman & his escapee knob being exterminated is no bad thing.

BuffyBeat · 22/04/2022 00:51

I’m terrified of Daleks and just the Dr Who music makes my heart race, even now.
So I’m behind the sofa with OP. 😬
