Why do so many MN posters use ect for etc?? It doesn’t even make sense sound wise. This is the only place I’ve ever seen it .

OP posts:
bilbodog · 18/04/2022 14:27

Typo?

VyeBrator · 18/04/2022 14:28

Because some people don't know the full word I expect. Surely that's the most obvious answer for you? 🤷‍♀️

It's not just Mumsnet though, it's all over the internet along with other misspellings.

sanityisamyth · 18/04/2022 14:28

It really annoys me!!

AnnUumellmahaye · 18/04/2022 14:29

I imagine they are spelling it phonetically. Why do some mumsnetters lack imagination ?

SummerHouse · 18/04/2022 14:30

I think some people think it's pronounced eckcetera. So ect. makes more sense if you think that.

VyeBrator · 18/04/2022 14:31

Exactly. I don't know why the OP is pretending not to realise that.

But that isn’t how you would spell it phonetically so you’d need quite a lot of information to think that.
Anoisagusaris · 18/04/2022 14:31

But it’s not correct phonetically?? The word is etcetera.

OP posts:
DoorLion · 18/04/2022 14:31

Imagination! Not information
And as that shows, it is more likely to be autocorrect.

Anoisagusaris · 18/04/2022 14:32

I’m not pretending not to know something! You don’t say ec-cetera. It’s et-cetera. That’s why I am asking!

Well clearly some people do say ec-cetera don't they?

And that's because they don't know the correct word 🤦‍♀️

AnnUumellmahaye · 18/04/2022 14:34

Are you familiar with different regional accents ?
Where I'm from, it would be pronounced Eck -cetera.

Anoisagusaris · 18/04/2022 14:36

Of course I’m familiar with regional accents. I’m not even British so I know all about varying accents. Just didn’t realise some people also mispronounce the word.

Or perhaps familiar with foreign people, or people who simply haven't had a very good education?
NannyR · 18/04/2022 14:38

When I say it out loud in my accent, it does sound slightly more like ec-cetera, rather than etcetera. I would imagine a lot of people would not have seen the full word written out, the abbreviation is used a lot more. Could also be a spell checker issue, whenever I type etc, my tablet always autocorrects to rtf, other devices might correct to ect for some random reason.

user1477249785 · 18/04/2022 14:40

Mainly, why does it matter? Do you understand what they mean? Great. Job of communication accomplished!

TheFallenMadonna · 18/04/2022 14:40

I like &c.

Beachsidesunset · 18/04/2022 14:42

Ah, Yul Brynner's 'Et cetera ... et cetera ... et cetera!' Smile

Anoisagusaris · 18/04/2022 14:44

@VyeBrator I am a foreign person 🤣

OP posts:
Anonymous48 · 18/04/2022 14:46

I agree with you. It's one of many things where I find it hard to understand how people think that's really what it should be. (See, also, loose instead of lose.)

EvenPhilip · 18/04/2022 14:48

How can you possibly think words aren't mispronounced sometimes? Hmm

It's one of the most common English speaking errors. It's two words btw et cetera.
Thatswhyimacat · 18/04/2022 14:50

Loads of people say it ec cetera. I'd say it's probably more common than the correct word.

VyeBrator · 18/04/2022 14:53
@VyeBrator I am a foreign person 🤣
In that case you're even less imaginative.

Although I'm guessing this is just a fake wide-eye post anyway as that'd make more sense.

PAFMO · 18/04/2022 14:53

Of course, if we're going to be totally pedantic about it, maybe we should start s campaign for it to be pronounced in the correct Latin way?
Would that be less irritating, OP?
