Why do so many MN posters use ect for etc?? It doesn’t even make sense sound wise. This is the only place I’ve ever seen it .

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 18/04/2022 14:55

It's not really a massive issue considering you know ecaxtly what they mean.

VyeBrator · 18/04/2022 14:56

@Anonymous48

I agree with you. It's one of many things where I find it hard to understand how people think that's really what it should be. (See, also, loose instead of lose.)
This is also pretty simple to understand.

Lose is pronounced loo se, so it doesn't take much to work out why some people make that mistake.

HirplesWithHaggis · 18/04/2022 14:58

@PAFMO

Of course, if we're going to be totally pedantic about it, maybe we should start s campaign for it to be pronounced in the correct Latin way? Would that be less irritating, OP?
But we don't know the "correct Latin way" to pronounce anything.
ENoeuf · 18/04/2022 14:58

Friend thought obese was ‘a beast’ for ages. I couldn’t care less about Latin which no one uses on a daily basis when I have that stuff to contend with 😂

Topseyt · 18/04/2022 14:58

It annoys me greatly too. I am very at home in Pedants' Corner.

EvenPhilip · 18/04/2022 15:01

As you are a 'foreign person' OP, I suspect you have had a better grounding in grammar et cetera than a native speaker. It's not uncommon when learning a new language to know the technicalities more than the average Joe who has been speaking it from birth.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/04/2022 15:02

@Anoisagusaris

I’m not pretending not to know something! You don’t say ec-cetera. It’s et-cetera. That’s why I am asking!
Not if you're from South London you don't.

People need to leave their spellcheck on though.

Words · 18/04/2022 15:03

It's an old Private Eye joke.

gwanwyn · 18/04/2022 15:04

I think some people think it's pronounced eckcetera.

Where I grew up it was pronounced like this.

I also had a teacher for two years who "corrected" etc to ect my parents only realised this near end of my time with them and questioned it - it was a whole thing - but wrong spelling stuck for ages - (I'm dyslexic and I do seem to pick up and have stick incorrect spellings).

It was starting to see et cetera more when I staretd doing a lot of wider reading which helped me see why it was wrong.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 18/04/2022 15:05

I do it because I can't be arsed correcting auto correct 😃

StrawberryPot · 18/04/2022 15:08

Agree op - it's very annoying. Nothing to do with regional accents or autocorrect (at least my iPhone doesn't correct etc)

WarmSausageTea · 18/04/2022 15:09

I like &c.

Me too! I don’t see it much these days, maybe it’s a bit old-fashioned.

Anonymous48 · 18/04/2022 15:09

@VyeBrator

I'm well aware of how the word lose is pronounced, as well as the word loose. They are not pronounced the same and are two completely separate unrelated words, so I do find it hard to believe when supposedly intelligent people mix them up.

Pixiedust1234 · 18/04/2022 15:12

If I had a pound for every time this tablet has autocorrected real words to misspelt words I would be very rich indeed. Its not as though I misspelt or changed it originally, which would make sense. I really really hate autocorrect.

Autocorrect doesn't change etc. At least mine doesn't.
dropoutdoreen · 18/04/2022 15:15

Totally agree, hard to believe. I think most just can't be bothered to correct themselves.

Bootothegoose · 18/04/2022 15:16

I think it's one of those colloquial misspellings.

It is pronounce et-cetera but many people pronounce is ec-cetra therefore will think it's etc.

Jumprope309 · 18/04/2022 15:17

Because that’s how Nigel Molesworth, goriller of 3b and curse of st custards, spells it.

Dancer47 · 18/04/2022 15:17

You see the illiterate "ect" everywhere. They have no idea what "et cetera" means, what language it is or what is even means and pronounce it "Eksetera". People copying others' mistakes - money see, monkey do.

HirplesWithHaggis · 18/04/2022 15:17

@dropoutdoreen

Because it's "et" (meaning "and") "cetera" ("the rest").

And my autocorrect changed "cetera" to "veteran". Confused

Sunnytwobridges · 18/04/2022 15:19

This drives me nuts. The same with using "your" instead of "you're" and "could of/would of" instead of "could've/would've".

Yes-people writing what they hear.

Like "would of, chester drawers, on tenderhooks" et cetera, et cetera, et cetera

They wouldn't be using it if they didn't know what if means, surely...
Thatswhyimacat · 18/04/2022 15:23

People would do well to remember that the people you're sneering at probably know lots of things that you don't.
