To ask for weird realisations you’ve had about life?

Things about mundane life that you’ve never given much thought but suddenly think “Now I think about it, that’s weird.”

I had one of these today. I live in a mid-terrace, neighbours are nice and quiet and we don’t hear a peep. A few days ago I had a snoop at one of the next-door neighbour’s house on Rightmove after seeing it was for sale, and realised that they have their bed right up against our party wall as I do mine. So even though I sleep in bed alone every night, there’s actually 2 people who I don’t really know just a couple of inches away from me! I don’t know why but for some reason it creeps me out. I’ve realised that in terraced houses you’re actually sharing one building with lots of people, many of whom you will NEVER interact with.

I don’t understand how toddlers can look at a dog and know that it is a dog, because a pug does not look like a Dalmatian or a corgi etc. How does a child know that each one of them is a dog, when some look more like a sheep?

nopuppiesallowed · 15/04/2022 15:11

@LakieLady

That a significant proportion of the UK population is racist, xenophobic and incredibly right-wing.

I mean, I always knew some people were, but there seem to be far more of them than I ever imagined.

Oh my goodness! Really? It sounds as if you have experienced a lot of racism and I'm so sorry. I'm white British so know that I'm never likely to be a target of racism in the uk but I have lots of friends of all ethnicities and would be absolutely furious if anyone disrespected any of them. None of my friends is racist and I go to a multicultural church where skin colour is no more remarkable than hair colour. I can honestly say that I only know 1 racist ( not a person of any faith) and he is extremely careful what he says when I'm around.....Again. I'm so sorry if you have experienced racism but there are lots of people who would be appalled by it.

They don’t though? mine were very sure small dogs were cats
Imabouttoexplode · 15/04/2022 16:01

@Zilla1

Sleep is odd when looked at from a predation perspective. Most prey animals choose to lose consciousness for several hours while their predators either do the same or asynchronously don't and hunt for unconscious prey.
I don't thunk prey animals do. Their very survival depends on being constantly aware. Horses, for instance, can sleep stood up and if they do all lie down, there's always at least one who remains standing and on the lookout.
Narwhalelife · 15/04/2022 17:09

Mine has to be that we all could have literally been living simple lives in the woods, on the beaches in paradise but we chose to introduce mortgages, paperwork, car insurance, the washing up etc in to our lives.

Who made that decision? 🤣🤣

Yeah, but a lot of us would have died horribly in childbirth, if we didn’t we would still have seen the majority of our children die in infancy, and would have been in a constant battle with starvation.
Squiff70 · 15/04/2022 17:20

Rabbits are prey animals. If they're not in a burrow (ie pet rabbits) they usually sleep with their eyes open. They are still sleeping but their subconscious is watching for predators. Occasionally if a rabbit feels very safe and doesn't think there's a current threat of predation, they will lie on their side with their eyes closed and not a single shit shall be given. @Squiff70 Guinea pigs sleep with their eyes open too👀

Narwhalelife · 15/04/2022 17:27

@Blert yeah but would be good while it lasted 🤣

I have often had this exact same thought!
BiscuitLover3678 · 15/04/2022 17:51

We are all obsessed with our homes. We could spend so much of our lives outdoors in clothes and just sitting and sleeping wherever and yet most of us are tucked up in man made buildings. (Those of us who are fortunate and not homeless). I know it is slightly different in some cultures such as nomads who move in tents which are very open to the elements and some travellers, but most of us couldn’t. We have so many creature comforts.

BiscuitLover3678 · 15/04/2022 17:52

I was a child without internet and yet as an adult I cannot fathom how my life would exist without it. The thought terrifies me!
I would also know a lot less people. The whole thing feels very strange.

Narwhalelife · 15/04/2022 17:55

That we all literally just agree what the time is. We all just unanimously agree that it’s nearly 6pm in the UK and if your fly to another county we all just agree that the time is now different 🤣

Spinninsweetness · 15/04/2022 18:11

I cannot and have never been able to comprehend dying and NEVER being on this planet ever again. EVER AGAIN. It petrifies me.

It's weird how different people's attitudes are to this! It doesn't baffle me or bother me in the slightest to think that I'll stop existing. After all, the world and other people existed for a very long time before I did! So really, what's the difference between the concept of your non-existence before you were born and and your non-existence after you die?

Fairislefandango · 15/04/2022 18:18

Hmmm.... I don't really think people did live in paradise before those things though! Maybe try 6 months living in the woods with no access to any modern facilities and see if you think it's paradise Grin.

To be fair, that’s how I came to the realisation…. A teenager smoking weed with friends. It was one of the “big questions” that came to the fore when being all mystically philosophical 🤣 It is still something that hurts my brain when I think about it too hard though.

@Rebeccasmoonnecklace

It always freaks me out to see Earth on the television as it makes me remember that we are inhabitants of a planet which is moving around within a galaxy. It’s almost too much information for my mind to compute, my DH thinks I’m weird for thinking this way and writing this down has made me hope I’m not the only one who feels this way SmileConfused
I think like that too - freaks me out how insignificant we really are in the universe!! Cf the Monty Python song from The Meaning of Life
AppleWax · 15/04/2022 18:36

Water in your tap is recycled dinosaur wee.

If birds are descended from dinosaurs, then dinosaurs must taste like chicken.

We know earth moves around the sun, and our galaxy is moving around a black hole (they think) then not only do we move in orbit around our sun but our sun is orbiting the inner black hole…. But not only that - our whole galaxy is moved big out and award from the centre of the universe as well. So we cannot actually stand still!

There is no past or future there is only the present moment.

Most of the stars we can see no longer exist.

AppleWax · 15/04/2022 18:41

Should read :

But not only that - our whole galaxy is moving out and away from the centre of the universe as well. So we cannot actually stand still!

Also why are my thumbs too big for my phone keypad and why is autocorrect so crap?

Bangolads · 15/04/2022 18:43

@DontStopMeNow7 with respect you do t know most people either because they have a whole universe of thoughts no one else will ever be aware of. Not sure you realised how narcissistic that sounded 🤔

Ineke · 15/04/2022 18:43

What sometimes astounds me is that the Pyramids were built when most of Europe was still in the Stoneage and living in caves.
And yes, other mammals do get periods, female dogs are said to be on heat when they have their periods. They usually keep,themselves clean. I would expect other mammals also have cycles.

HibouMilou · 15/04/2022 18:44

I realised quite late in adulthood that Humpty Dumpty was meant to be an egg. As a child I assumed just a very plump man.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/04/2022 18:44

@MuchTooTired

A weird one I realised the other day is that people I see whilst out and about have whole actual lives. There’s a woman I see on the school run, every school day I drive past her in the morning, we smile at each other, then do the same in the afternoon. I saw her the other day in b&q and it completely threw me - it wasn’t a school day and she was there with her mum and blanked me.

Obviously I know everyone I see has a whole life just like I do, but it made me think about how many people there are, with lives that I know nothing about all over the world. I guess I’ve not matured past the kid in school who doesn’t realise the teacher doesn’t live there permanently until the next school day Grin

Totally get this! Every so often I find myself thinking there are over 7 billion people on the planet and they all have a life and I find it overwhelming, so I switch to thinking about something else. Don't get me started on how many other planets and stars there are ...

It is easy to tell when it is midday as the sun is at it's highest point, with a sundial. Before the railways, that is how everyone told the time, so the time in Bristol was different to the time in London. Once we started travelling it was evident that it was impossible to run trains to a timetable unless the times were synchronised, hence Greenwich Mean Time became the standard for the UK, and different time zones across the world so everyone in the same area worked to the same time.
