Neighbour's bad habit

AIBU? You can tell me if I am!!

Just got back from work. Opened our bedroom window and child's room to let some air in as house hasn't been occupied all day, usually if weather is nice I like to do this. Puff comes in the smell of weed.... quite strong too 🤦🏻‍♀️ I know exactly who it's from, a couple of doors down. Obviously sat in their garden.

I really don't want to report it and be seen as the nagging person. I don't know if they even keep you anonymous?? I'm pregnant and to be honest the smell has made me feel a bit sick and now it's in my house. We only have a small terrace.

Sometimes we smell it usually on a Friday night but never this bad ... may of got to my wits end with it. What do I do ... just leave it be?

I'm not sure there is much you can do. I don't think the police.are going to do much about people smoking weed in their own garden. It does stink though!

Just get an air freshener or scented candle?

VyeBrator · 08/04/2022 18:54

Have a polite word incase they're unaware it's bothering you.

As for reporting it, who to anyway? The police won't care and if they're renting, the landlord might not be fussed as it's not in the house.

YANBU though, it's a nasty smell.

Thats what I thought. The neighbour doesn't cause us or anyone I know issues at all just the smell of weed occasionally 🤦🏻‍♀️ and yes it's in their own home. Thank you

Do they drive a car? If it can be smelt that far away, then reasonable to report to the police.

Daisyshapedbuttons · 08/04/2022 18:58

It’s an awful smell, I’d be tempted to ‘tip off’ the police about drug dealing then hope the neighbours become more discrete in future after a raid. For now I’d say use a fan pointing towards the window and lots of febreze.

Isausernameavailable · 08/04/2022 19:03

Does your neighbour know it's causing issues for you? They may be unaware. You could try a chat?

Don't be silly. Encouraging to the OP to tell a pack of lies (which it would have to be a pack) to get the police to raid the house is ridiculous and would very likely get her into a whole lot of trouble.

OP, have a polite word with them Smile

That's actually fucking awful. Wasting police crime and actually committing a crime yourself. And the op says herself these people aren't massive trouble causers. Also it's worth taking into account that weed is becoming legal in most of the civilised world.

I don't know what to do about the smell apart form having a quiet word. They could likely be horrified and find another place to go.

vincettenoir · 08/04/2022 19:06

YNBU not to like it. But you can’t legitimately expect to stop your neighbours smoking a spliff in their own garden. If the garden is big it might be worth explaining and asking them to smoke at the other end. Otherwise I would just keep the window closed (annoying as that is).

Why would you waste scarce police resources like that? Hmm You'd likely end up in trouble yourself for a hoax call.

OP, don't do that ^.

Speak to them, they might not be aware how much it's affecting you. Don't go in all guns blazing about it being cannabis though, that'll only get their backs up.

Technically, there's nothing that can be done though. Police won't do anything, you can't force them to stop and what they do in their garden is up to them - all you can do is hope for them to be neighbourly.

On the account it is illegal I think you can.

However the police no longer have the resources to care, I think changing your WiFi name to 'I can smell your weed' is the answer (or just talk to them)

Do people seriously think the kind of people who smoke weed in their terraced back garden at 6pm give a shit what a neighbour thinks? They'll just tell her to fuck off and then it's more hassle for the OP.

www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/news/regional-news/what-your-neighbours-smoking-weed-40888 number one on my Google search don't know if it helps.

Peachtoiletpaper · 08/04/2022 19:42

I doubt the police will do anything.

What are the neighbours like, OP? If they're nice enough people who like a smoke on a Friday night (im not commenting on the rights and wrongs thereof) then maybe you could have a quiet word, just say you're not interested what they do in their own home but it's really affecting your morning sickness, could they please do it further away, say at the bottom of the garden?

vincettenoir · 08/04/2022 19:45

I don’t suggest for a moment it was legal. There are a lot of things that are illegal that you could not legitimately expect to stop from happening @MrsRobinsonsHandprints.

Unless you know them or you are them you have no idea how they'll react. People often don't realise how much spliff or cigarette smoke travels outside.

And what type of person is that? Are you aware the NHS now prescribes cannabis for pain relief/nausea/MS stiffness? Do you hold the same views for those who drink alcohol as soon as it's socially acceptable because it's '5pm somewhere'?

I don't use it personally, but my aunt had cancer and it saved her from some of her symptoms.

The judgement and stereotyping dripping from your comment is gross.

Isonthecase · 08/04/2022 20:09

We had that a while back, 3 houses around us and it was like they took turns. Luckily 2 of then moved and the other was a teenager so we asked his mum if he could do it elsewhere. Massively improved since.

Sunnytwobridges · 08/04/2022 20:38

Ugggh this would annoy me. I had a friend who had a neighbor that would do this. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do. And I honestly wouldn't want to get on anyone's bad side by complaining.

I suggest you look up what legitimate means.
LongBlobson · 08/04/2022 21:36

We had a next door neighbour who smoked weed outside their back door, in a small terrace. The smell would come in all our windows. I knocked the door and asked him if he wouldn't mind smoking it further down the garden. He was apologetic and it improved after that. I think it doesn't hurt to ask - I was v polite just explained we didn't like it.

HappyAsLarry2022 · 08/04/2022 21:48

@Daisyshapedbuttons are you for real?
‘Tipping’ off to the police that they are drug dealers?
I work from home and get a waft of weed on the odd day at about 5.30/6pm. It’s obviously a neighbour having a spliff after work. However, it doesn’t bother me as it is occasionally and it’s not too offensive to me as it is only occasionally.

HappyAsLarry2022 · 08/04/2022 21:50

As with @LongBlobson, I would be inclined to knock and explain. Even weed smokers can be considerate, especially if they are generally good and considerate neighbours. They might not even realise the upset they are causing the op

BOOTS52 · 08/04/2022 21:53

I would not bother even calling to them as it could cause more issues than it is worth. Not sure what else you can do as they are in their own house. Do you know them at all. They are probably smoking it outside so they do not stink their own house out.

BOOTS52 · 08/04/2022 21:55

If they have a car maybe put a nice note on it asking can they smoke it further down the garden and they won't then know it was you and it make help.

luxxlisbon · 08/04/2022 21:55

😂 no one is getting raided for smoking weed on a Friday night.

Op surely it would be just as annoying to you if they were smoking a cigarette outside? It might be annoying but part of living in close together terraced houses is give and take with neighbours.
I’m sure your kids screaming in the garden means other people have times when they feel they can’t open their windows.
Since it is mostly once a week, isn’t accompanied with antisocial behaviour etc then I think you just need to try to ignore it.
