Hated watching him. Ran out of the room. To me, as a child he was a creep and he unsettled me .

Yanbu. I remember my mum saying there’s something odd about him and it will come out one day
Relieved that I never got selected for Jim’ll Fix It

There was a cement mixer company called Jim’ll Mix It and I wonder if it had to shut down after the allegations

Chloemol · 07/04/2022 21:22

YANBU. I always hated him as a child, slimy, creepy man and it was obvious to me in my teens he was a ‘dirty old man’

I hope those who knew, and lots did, are ashamed of themselves

Peepo80 · 07/04/2022 21:26

Yep! He creeped me out too, as did Rolf Harris.

Yeah cause your mum never sent the letter off to the fucking pervert.

BearFacedCheekGrylls · 07/04/2022 21:35

As a young child I loved all the magic of Jim’ll fix it. But as I got older I used to complain, why does he always have to touch the people? I could see how creepy he was.

Years before Rolf was exposed an Australian friend told me there was a reason he couldn’t live/work in oz.

If nothing else we have to learn that sometimes there is no smoke without fire.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 07/04/2022 21:37

Beyond repulsive and evil. There’s something so arrogant and untouchable about many of these perverts; my mother loved Rolf Harris but he, and Gary Glitter had an air of I don’t know what about them.

I find a lot of extroverted comedians etc make me feel uneasy, although of course that doesn’t make them perverts. Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd, I couldn’t stand them.

CandyLeBonBon · 07/04/2022 21:39

Me too op. I loved jim'll fix it and Totp but would switch off the latter if JS was hosting and wrote letters into Jim'll fix it asking not to sit next to Jim and his red chair. I never ever got the 'Jimmy love' and he always creeped me out even before any of this came out.

BreakerOfBras · 07/04/2022 21:39

Felt the same. Remember my dad telling me he was a wrong'un. I had the same feeling about Barrymore and Jim Davidson too.

venusmay · 07/04/2022 21:41

I had no idea, I enjoyed jim'll fix it as a child but never really paid much attention to him. It was always the stories that I liked.

Makes me shudder to think of it now.

willstarttomorrow · 07/04/2022 21:42

I think hindsight is in totally in play. I remember Jim Will Fix It and JS being a constantly a celeb - weird man running marathons in tiny shorts etc. He was treated as an eccentric. I moved to Leeds in 2001- he was a local hero.

I remember being on a day out in Otley with DH and DC and going to the cheap cafe on the bridge where all the cyclists stopped and him turning up and is his attitude that he is 'a big deal' and he was. Still in shiny track suits, dodgy hair etc. Totally uncool. DC was born in 2006 so people were much more aware but he was still seen as an eccentric hero. On the day of his funeral I had to be in central leeds for a court hearing for work. I remember my manager came as well and I joked about checking out the funeral but that he was far less creepy dead than alive.

venusmay · 07/04/2022 21:42

So glad my mum was never bothered to send a letter to him!

SwelegantParty · 07/04/2022 21:43

Jim'll Fix It really creeped me out, we watched it as a family and I quite liked watching the kids get to do things, but I hated the studio bits, he made my flesh crawl. I hated him on TOTP too. Repulsive man.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/04/2022 21:46

why would that be unreasonable? even if it hadn't emerged that he was a prolific abuser Confused

Abra1d1 · 07/04/2022 21:47

My father wouldn’t let us have him on the TV and we didn’t put up a fight.

OneOfTheGrundys · 07/04/2022 21:51

We all thought the same thing in our family. My mum never let us watch it as she found him so repulsive and creepy.
I’ve said so on here before only to be mocked however as apparently not liking someone because you instinctively find them repulsive and creepy is ridiculous. 🙄

IcedOatLatte · 07/04/2022 21:53

I was wondering the same. Why would it matter what you thought about a vile person who's been dead for years? No one is going to tell you that you should have thought he was a fantastic human.
OneOfTheGrundys · 07/04/2022 21:53

The premise of the show (kids writing in with awesome requests) is fabulous however. Would be nice to reclaim it.

Laiste · 07/04/2022 21:53

Our next door neighbour, when i was a kid, loved him and wrote in and her DD went on the show.

Day after filming DM asked her how it all went ect. Neighbour was v quiet about it.

Weeks later she told DM that she hated the whole thing and wished they'd never written in. JS kept wanting to take her DD off away from everyone and was very hands on.

Neighbour wouldn't let her DD out of her sight. JS got the hump. The day ended early for the DD and she never made it onto the final cut. Lucky escape!

BearFacedCheekGrylls · 07/04/2022 21:55

It’s not hindsight. There are incidences of him assaulting people on camera.

mrshoho · 07/04/2022 21:56

Completely agree. He was like a creepy clown in my eyes. I loved the jim'll fix it show but not him.

I watched the netflix documentary and looking back he was so devious and manipulative.

MissMogwai · 07/04/2022 21:56

Totally agree. I used to like watching the kids do whatever it was, but he gave me the creeps. Mum used to turn it over as she said he wasn't a nice man.

When I was older my mum said she'd seen him in a bar in London once, in the early seventies. He came to talk to her and her friends and he was awful, very inappropriate and a lech, so they all walked off. Later one of the women said he'd put his hand up her dress and sexually assaulted her.

It's bizarre to me how he was untouchable even then. Evil bastard.

Cyw2018 · 07/04/2022 21:57

I have a really vivid memory of watching jim'll fix it as a kid (older primary age I would think) and finding it really uncomfortable but not really understanding why or being able to express my feelings.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 07/04/2022 21:59

Never liked him, but used to watch his show Jim'll Fix It in case they had demolitions which I loved at that time (I was a bit odd that way).

I would feel really grossed out by him, especially when he put the medals on the kids.

brokengoalposts · 07/04/2022 22:00

It annoys me when people say "no one had a clue" when actually loads of people were weirded out by him. Obviously I didn't know the extent of what he was doing but I was definitely not surprised when it all came out. Horrid slimy man.

TheDogsMother · 07/04/2022 22:00

I loved the programme Jim'll Fix It but even at age about eight I found him strange and chilling.
