I'd love to hear your woo stories and experiences as mumsnet has had some great stories over time. I'm asking under aibu as it usually gets more replies.

I'm posting under a throwaway as my story is outing: When I was younger I used to share a room with my sister and we regularly would hear footsteps coming up the stairs towards our bedroom when either our parents were downstairs or were asleep. We also saw shadows a couple of times and my sister heard her name being called. My sister always maintains she saw a flerting glimpse of a woman once when she walked past the doorway of our room.

More recently I've moved in to a house and had some strange goings on. I lost a sentimental ring and searched up and down for it and about a week later, came home from work one day to it on my bedside table. I live alone and just can't see how it magically landed on my bedside table. I also have seen very transparent shadows out of the corner of my eye and had that strong sense of being watched.

I would really love to hear your stories!

I always have a little chuckle when I see these threads.

So many times on MN we have the secularists telling us that God doesn't exist, there are no angels or spirits, that we are nuts believing in an 'invisible sky fairy', that religion is warping our kids minds etc etc

And yet when it comes to Woo stories there are 100's of replies.

My woo story is that every time I open a thread on Mumsnet, the first reply is invariably arsey.

Longdistance · 06/04/2022 05:21

@ticktockriojaoclock true.
I love woo stories. Though, I’m in a different house tonight on my own, so best not scare myself Blush

marmiteandminticecream · 06/04/2022 05:56

mines not woo but strange
my sister as 2 close friends mary and jane , always in each others houses for coffee, nights out together, shopping
just after princess diana died i was in my sisters house and i asked her why she didn't go to london with mary and jane to lay flowers
she looked at me puzzled and said what you on about they didn't go
i said they did and you told me they did
with that jane knocked on the door , my sister asked if they had gone to london to lay flowers
jane stuttered and said it was a spur of the moment thing, my sister told her to leave as she was upset they hadn;t included her
i still don't know how i knew

There is no good evident for supernatural phenomenon of any kind.

There is probably more proof of the existence of what we call ghosts - probably just old energy hanging about, than there is of some sort of god which has never, ever been seen or proven to exist in anyway.

There is so much more to our existence, probably so much more that we don’t understand yet about life and it really has nothing to do with some made up god.

HeatherShiver · 06/04/2022 07:49

Me and DP stayed at Jamaica Inn last October. We sat outside late at night (1am ish) as he wanted a cigarette, it was fairly mild but so misty you could only see a couple of metres in front of you.
We both heard heavy footsteps, like big boots with jingley straps walk across in front of us and stop, then walk on. There was no one there, we got up to check there was no one there, looking and heard the same exact steps again like a recording.
It was very spooky at the time.

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/04/2022 09:27

Ex-DP and I used to live in a converted church. The bell in the spire had been disabled during the conversion (we knew this, having tried when drunk to have a go at bell-ringing.)

Yet every so often for about a year we’d be in our bedroom and hear the sound of church bells for about ten seconds. It wasn’t our church bell and we lived rurally, several miles from the next nearest church. It was a creepy mystery, as if the ghost of a former church warden were letting us know their presence. Except we don’t believe in that stuff.

Anyway, turns out I’d accidentally activated some some sort of in-game noise notification alarm alert thing in The Sims, which I played on my iPad, and the iPad was kept in the bedside cabinet overnight. One day it started church-belling when I was holding it and that’s how we solved the mystery.

So whilst this is clearly a funny non-woo anecdote, had we been woo-woo people in the first place, and had I never discovered it was the iPad, I could easily be telling you this as something I believed to be a genuine unexplained woo experience.

ShaneTwane · 06/04/2022 09:29

These threads are always great! Even if some of the stories are made up it's still fun and some are most definitely real and bizarre. I have a few I might share under a name change.

The posts are not asking for people’s proof the supernatural exists, they ask for stories people can’t explain.
I’m not sure many of the people who post will be willing to murder people in the name of the footsteps they heard when they were 11.

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 07/04/2022 07:43

@Carpy899

'There is no good evident for supernatural phenomenon of any kind.'

So all the folks who post 'woo' stories are either hallucinating, lying, fantasising, dreaming, on drugs, drunk, are delusional etc etc?

Seems like an awful lot of people have some kind of problem in this area? Hmm

What on earth are you talking about ?? Confused

I've looked after many dead people. Definitely no energy there! Maybe I'll get a surprise one day Grin

Roselilly36 · 07/04/2022 08:43

I really think some people are just attuned to this kind of thing.

DH often sees things, the property we live in now was a probate sale, the owner who lived here before, died in the property (I only know this, as solicitor sent me a copy of the bundle which also contained the owners death certificate) for the first 10 days living of here, we found it a little hard to settle, one morning DH, said I saw the owners spirit last night, like a ball of energy that looked in our room and then went along the hall and out of the door.

We both used to see shadows of children in our previous home, (built on grounds of a school) particularly if the door to our en-suite was left open, so I always made sure I closed it at night. As this used to stop it.

When DS2 was about 3, we were in a shop and the assistant was talking to him and said what’s your name he said x (late FIL name) but they all call me x. FIL had died 20+ years before, and was only ever referred to a Grandad, never by his first name.

The night MIL died, we were away on holiday, DH woke at about 3am, all the hairs on his arms felt electricifed, he looked over to the bathroom and he could see the perfect silhouette of his mums shape, the next morning he said I know mum has gone, I can’t understand why I haven’t had a phone call, where we were staying had poor mobile phone signal, the call came to say MIL had passed away, in the early hours of the same morning DH had had the strange experience.

So many things over the years, too many to just be coincidental. People can believe or not it doesn’t matter to me, but all these things have happened over the years.

I love a woo thread! Often bookmark to read later in the evening to really ramp up the Shit Oneself Mood Grin

Crikey, waaaaay too much overthinking on this thread!

Best ever MN woo story was the one with the poster house sitting a remote farm on the edge of a spooky forest, while looking after a dog and puppies and spooky things occur leading pup to run into woods (has it never seen a horror film? You just don't do that Grin) and poor OP to run after it and encountered malevolent goings on.

It could have been made up tosh but it was Just Excellent. Probably in the classics board somewhere.

Whiskersonkittens21 · 07/04/2022 09:53

I once was shook awake by my partner and I was very spaced out. He was shaking me because I'd sat bolt up right in bed, screamed out loud, he'd asked me what is wrong and I'd said "the darkness is coming for me"

I creeped myself out.

Why do people always bring this up? It was so obviously a load of bollocks and not even scary or good writing Confused

When I eventually read it, I thought I'd got the wrong post because that couldn't possibly be what everyone always bangs on about ConfusedConfused

Dad died years ago and was a smoker, usually when I’m overly stressed I can smell smoke in my bathroom.. as strong as if someone was in there have a ciggy. No one in my home smokes unless it’s one of the cats!
When he died my mother came round and I felt so cold I was shivering when she left I warmed up.

DragonOverTheMoon · 07/04/2022 11:17

Love woo stories.

I once woke up to a man sat on my bed. I felt really scared! I told my ex about it and he shouted at the ghost to go away. He shouted a few times and my old flat felt better after. Yes it was most likely sleep paralysis and yes it was probably a placebo effect that made me feel better but it didn't feel like a dream. It felt real and really scary.

I often experience sleep paralysis it really is very frightening.

We often smell cigarette smoke in our house, but nobody smokes! We thought that the smell might have blown into the house from outside, as our neighbour used to smoke, but he moved away about 10 years ago, and the new neighbours don’t smoke.
