What on earth were m&s thinking to phase it out?

I really miss it and would love to see it reintroduced

piglet81 · 01/04/2022 18:40

Free biscuit? Two of my favourite words.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 01/04/2022 18:45

It was great. Sometimes you don't want a big biscuit bought separately. Just a tiny taste.

I rarely buy coffee out now though.

Oneborneverydecade · 01/04/2022 19:00

I think they want you to buy the mini bag of the same biscuits. I miss it too
I appreciate the Sparks free hot drink loyalty card though

Mamette · 01/04/2022 19:03

That tiny biscuit on the side of your saucer?

They have stopped that? That’s a bit tight of them.

Lavenderlid · 01/04/2022 19:27

Yes I would choose their cafe just to get the biscuit with my coffee. I know I could buy some, but since I'm always on a diet just getting that one small one was perfect. I did hear someone say you can get one if you ask, but I'm not doing that.

Rememberitwell · 01/04/2022 19:30

Yes what happened to that?!

LadyAddle · 01/04/2022 19:53

I was quite brazen when they stopped doing it automatically, and just used to ask - they would produce it from under the counter like a dodgy magazine. (I'm too far from an M&S now)
@Lavenderlid, be brave!

Penhaligon · 01/04/2022 19:54

Are they individually wrapped?

NotEnoughTeaYet · 01/04/2022 19:55

Yanbu. I would happily forego all the random 15% off coffee beans and children's socks or whatever irrelevant 'deal' pops up on my sparks card for a small biscuit with my coffee.

SmellyOldOwls · 01/04/2022 19:55

What kind of biscuit was it? I quite fancy a garibaldi.

Lavenderlid · 01/04/2022 19:56

@LadyAddle it messes with my mental perception that I have indeed just requested a black coffee, and they are foisting this biscuit on me so I just have to eat it.
Actually asking for it means I can't delude myself Grin

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 01/04/2022 20:10

Shortbread type, small and round I think

JudgeJ · 01/04/2022 20:22

I felt the same when Waitrose did away with the free coffee if you bought something to eat and I think it was a poor commercial decision.

We were usually in Waitrose late morning and would have a danish, sausage roll, soup, sandwich etc, not all of them, one each but when the coffees stopped we stopped too and it was noticable that the cafe was not as busy. We would spend maybe £6 to £8, the cost of a couple of coffees wouldn't be much to Waitrose but they've lost a lot of revenue.

Bagadverts · 01/04/2022 20:28

From what I recall they said it was to prevent food waste as a lot were not eaten. Don’t know how rather that is true or it was just to save money. It was a while before lockdown though so if affected sales they would have brought them back by popular request.

starfishmummy · 01/04/2022 20:31

@Penhaligon

Are they individually wrapped?
They weren't but they always used tongs to serve it. Stopped using m&s for coffee sfter the assistant poured half my coffee down the outside of the mug and then wiped it off using the same cloth she had just wiped the counter top with.

@SmellyOldOwls

Either a crispy HobNob type , a shortbread or at Christmas........a tree shaped shortbread.

I was told they stopped because of the wastage but every one I saw on a saucer got hoovered up by the customer before the cup touched their lips !

Lolabalola · 01/04/2022 21:10

Who would not eat them ! That’s a blatant misrepresentation 🤣🤣

Sidisawetlettuce · 01/04/2022 21:12

I once asked for a skinny chai latte in the M&S cafe and the woman behind the counter had no skimmed milk and had to go two floors down to the Food Hall to get some. Because I had had to wait, she gave me a free bag of the mini biscuits. I was in Heaven. Truly a wonderful day.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/04/2022 21:13

Does anyone ever eat that?

I thought they were just there a bit like a chain letter, to pass on to the next customer.

JawboxGinger · 01/04/2022 21:19

YANBU, it was the perfect accompaniment.

I stupidly spent £2 on an 'iced spiced' bun earlier to go with my coffee, even though a packet of 2 is about £1.35 in the adjoining shop Hmm

Thoughtless bastards.

daisychain01 · 01/04/2022 21:19

I can't decide what's more heinous, M&S not giving the free little biscuit or Waitrose cancelling their free newspapers, and free coffee in store.

It seems like shops are determined to take away every last feel-good factor from the shopping experience so we all sit at home and buy online instead.

They didn't cancel the paper, you can get it with the offers every day.

You can get it with the app.
